I've never understood Vince's need to have one top guy that's superior to everyone and is infallible. First off, it isn't the 80s anymore so the template has to change. Also wouldn't you want more than one guy to build around? Have 5 to 6 top level guys means people can take time off without worrying about business going down, you can run multiple house shows without burning people out and you can create more "dream matches". Have one top guy who bulldozes over all others makes no sense to me.
You can even argue that the purpose of 2 rosters and shows is
explicitly against that, and that Smackdown shows the advantages of a more free-for-all style card. Raw is supposed to have a top face, but who is it really now? Roman? Nope, guy doesn't have the crowd? Seth? Maybe, but he got injured again after being made pretty bland compared to what he could be, and only now do we get some of what seems promised. Zayn? Heck no, they won't let him win anything serious and if the rumors are true that his "push" is over to make way for Jericho being face, then the rumors should be that Vince is senile. RAW's been a heels show for months now, and that's why the main draw is going to be former heels turning on their associates instead of what the nominal faces are doing.
Smackdown's not perfect, but at least in most cases, they seem to have embraced the idea that the simple heel-face dynamic shouldn't override the appearance of competitiveness, and they have no problem with fielding multiple "top guys." I didn't care about Baron Corbin at all, but now I'm really excited for him. Calling Styles a heel may be technically accurate, but at least until last week, he was being booked and promo-ed as more of a bad@$$ tweener. Dean Ambrose is treated like a real veteran threat, and his comedy actually works well with his danger level. Cena's arguably doing his best work in years, Orton's wrestling consistently well, Bray's getting his due, and even Luke Harper got something like a push that he deserved.
On Smackdown, just about anyone could have the belt, and it makes sense, gets the crowd fired up, and there's several legitimate contenders to challenge him. And if you're an up-and-comer or someone who's worried about be buried by negligence, Smackdown is where you want to go. It's why I hope Vince doesn't just keep taking the other NXT stars and stranding them on RAW.
