We are into December and heading towards the festive season, which means it's time to break out the movie we only usually watch once a year. I'm just going to list my top 10, if you want to put yours in order, feel free. :)

Santa Claus The Movie

Scrooged

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

A Christmas Carol (1984)

Home Alone

Northpole

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

The Polar Express

Elf

Hercule Poirot's Christmas

I don't know about top 10 favorites. I like most of the ones you already mentioned.. Best I can come up with is about 5..

A Christmas Carol (2009)

This one often tends to get overlooked. A real gem.

Also The Polar Express, A Christmas Story, Home Alone 1 & 2, and Jim Carrey's take on the Grinch.

I gotta say I agree with most of the ones you chose - the ones I've seen - so, I gotta check out North Pole and Hecule.

To go in a vastly different direction (or rather adding to it films that people may not have heard of) -

Also (new and not like the above) -

I just watched 'The Man Who Invented Christmas', got it on DVD as something new to watch in the Christmas films list (rather than re-watching the old favourites) and found it a 'middling watch', ostensibly, a 'Finding Neverland' for Christmas and in the style (I found) as the Albert Finney version of the story, A Christmas Carol, which is my favourite version of the story. It's a bit 'by the numbers' and plays out a wee bit 'safe' but enjoyable all the same. 6/10.

As far as my absolute favourites for the thread itself, will come back with a top 10, but 'Its a Wonderful Life' is my number 1, always.

A Christmas Carol (1951 Alistair Sim version)
Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Holiday Inn (1942) (not really a Christmas movie but Christmas plays a part in it)

Not Christmas movies but things I like to watch around Christmas:
Toy Story
The nativity sequence from the 1977 miniseries 'Jesus of Nazareth'

1. Die Hard
2. Batman Returns
3. Bad Santa
4. Lethal Weapon
5. Gremlins
6. Christmas Vacation
7. Home Alone
8. The Nightmare Before Christmas
9. Scrooged
10. Elf (a new entry for me, surprised I liked it as I'm not big on Will)

  1. Christmas Vacation
  2. Elf
  3. Home Alone
  4. Scrooged
  5. Muppet Christmas Carol
  6. Home Alone 2
  7. The Polar Express
  8. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
  9. A Christmas Story
  10. Ernest Saves Christmas

Non movies...
  1. Charlie Brown Christmas
  2. Garfield Christmas
  3. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
  4. Claymation Christmas
  5. Hanna-Barbera: The Nativity

Die Hard
Home Alone 2
Home Alone (which is just Die Hard for kids)
Love Actually
Rise of the Guardians
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)
Nightmare Before Christmas
Muppets Christmas Carol
Jingle All The Way
..i'll say Elf just to round it out.

Here’s some in no particular order.

And these aren’t movies but two of my favorite TV Christmas specials from when I was younger.

Oh god, there are a lot of great Christmas movies. A Christmas Story is my clear favorite, there's no competition in that regard. I refuse to have a Christmas without watching it. Other favorites in no particular order would be

Ron Howard's How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Home Alone
It's a Wonderful Life
Elf
Batman Returns
Almost Christmas
The Santa Clause

Home Alone 2
The Santa Clause
Die Hard
Batman Returns
Rocky IV

Said it in the unpopular thread, but don't get the love for Elf whatsoever.

Yep, the Bob Clark Christmas movie I vastly prefer. Never understood the appeal of A Christmas Story.

1. A Christmas Story - This more than any other film accurately represents what Christmas was like as a kid.

2. Christmas Vacation - While A Christmas Story nails Christmas as a kid, this one is Christmas as an adult. Both are great in their own way, but my sentiment and nostalgia gravitates to Story a bit more than Vacation.

3. Miracle on 34th Street (Maureen O'Hara version) - A very fun film with a biting critique on the commercialisation of Christmas.Ray

4. Scrooge (Alastair Sim version) - The best version of the Dickens classic, this one expands on Scrooge's character and how he became what he is. Sim is the Scrooge all others are compared to.

5. White Christmas - Better than the film where the song originated from.

6. Die Hard - The best film on the list, just not the best Christmas film. I just can't justify putting it any lower.

7. Rocky - The original. Often overlooked as being a Christmas movie, but a washed up prize fighter given a million to one shot on New Year's and discovering family in the process is more of one than one might think.

8. A Christmas Carol (Reginald Owen version) - This is the classic version, but I prefer Sim. Still excellent.

9. It's a Wonderful Life - Fantastic movie, but I find it curious that this is widely regarded as a Christmas classic and Rocky isn't, even though Rocky has more to do with Christmas than this does. It still fits the Christmas spirit though.

10. Joyeux Noel - About the famous Christmas truce of 1914.

1. A Charlie Brown Christmas -- not a movie, but along with The Snowman, the iconic (for me) rumination on the holiday and a perfect piece of sad art
2. Tokyo Godfathers -- captures the spiritual meaning of the holiday better than anything I know except A Charlie Brown Christmas and The Snowman
3. The Snowman -- again not a movie, but sad and beautiful
4. Meet Me In St. Louis -- though not strictly just a Christmas movie, its Christmas section captures the heartbreak and warmth of the holiday
5. Babes in Toyland 1961 -- weird and wonderful, like Lewis Carroll writing a Christmas story while very high on drugs
6. Rankin-Bass's Christmas specials in general -- still magical after all these years, even the bats**t Rudolph's Christmas in July, which may have been made by people on acid but somehow still works, and Nestor and The Little Drummer Boy, which are heartbreaking and hopeful, the way the holidays often are
7. It's a Wonderful Life -- also incredibly dark, when you think about it. Why are a lot of the best Christmas programs so sad?
8. Miracle on 34th Street (the original) -- very, very funny
9. Mickey's Christmas Carol -- my favorite adaptation of Dickens's classic, even though David Lean's version is better and the ones with Patrick Stewart and George C Scott were far more faithful.
10. Mikhail Baryshnikov's Nutcracker. Completely magical from beginning to end.

Yep that’s Rick aka Andrew Lincoln in Love Actually. That second gif is from the 1974 holiday slasher Black Christmas. A classic.

Thanks, did they do a remake of that in the last few years?

Not full movies but I love the Prep & Landing shorts.

1) It's a Wonderful Life
2) The Snowman
3) Santa Claus : The Movie
4) Scrooge - Albert Finney Version (my personal favourite version)
5) The Bishop's Wife
6) Miracle on 34th Street (original)
7) Gremlins
8) Arthur Christmas
9) Scrooged
10) The Polar Express

Totally blanked on Edward Scissorhands. And barely registered Rocky as a Christmas movie (as it would've been my #1).
