Far From Home Zendaya IS MJ

SJW crew? Huh?

He’s a resident Conservative, Trump-supporting SSH troll who occasionally comes into threads for certain movies, comic book or not, claiming that if they contain just a little ounce of representation, Hollywood is somehow “forcing” some “SJW agenda” down his poor little throat, and then just leaves the thread without responding, hoping to get a rise out of people.

It’s pretty pathetic, honestly.

Fake MJ and the "sjw crew" supporting cast is such a drag on this franchise. Just cringe worthy in all honesty.

This factor alone may keep me from making this film an event. Meaning, I usually gather tons of family and friends and pay through the nose for Marvel films. This feels like Disney channel "meh" not worthy of support.

That's a nice little racist dogwhistle there, Tucker Carlson. Why don't you say what you really mean when you complain about the supporting cast?

I definitely agree with those who think Marvel Studios made some odd choices with Peter's pals. Despite being a shade darker in skin tone than the traditional version, everything about Zendaya screams Mary Jane Watson. Ned probably oughta have been Ganke. And it was odd to cast and actress who is the spitting image of Gwen Stacey from the comics as Betty Brant.

But I thought they were all terrific in Homecoming and overcame my desire for comic book purity. And they couldn't go full caucasian in depicting Bronx school students without looking awful.

It's not about them not being Caucasian (well, to the Marvel dude it is, but not to me). Zendaya could have been fine as MJ, but she's a frumpy anti-social loner who's nothing like MJ at all. Ned is Ganke in all but name. Flash is likewise nothing like Flash and literally looks like Tom Holland could kick his ass with no need for superpowers.

Their intention is to update the character. I know she has her fans, but there are a lot of things about the traditional MJ that feel out of date or just kind of silly. They're taking this opportunity to change MJ into a character that is more suited to Peter Parker.. intellectually and temperament wise.
She is Mary Jane. She's the Mary Jane of the future. Sometimes, characters have to change. And that's okay, because if the character is truly so valuable, then she's more than her looks and her profession. This new MJ can have all the emotional baggage that the traditional one had... but with a different look and with different goals. That's okay by me, personally.

The better option here would have been making her a new character instead of trying to have their cake & it eat as well. At least if she was a new character you get less complaints instead of having a In Name Only character that will forever hold the Character back. Come on Sony get these In Name Only characters out of the MCU & Into The Sony Verse

It just frustrates me that this could have been a definitive (or closest we've gotten) version of Spider-Man on the bigscreen, with him being in the MCU and able to interact with other superheroes, and with Marvel having the rights, and with Tom Holland who's the most Peter Parker-esque actor we've had yet (Holland basically is just a British Peter Parker IRL), but then practically every single character besides Peter himself are these funky alternate universe versions of themselves. It makes the whole thing like an elseworlds version rather than what it could/should have been and it can't help but feel like kind of a missed opportunity, with Holland and the MCU.

This.

I could care less about certain diversity type changes but the character changes they made have been meh to bad imo.

And I'm not at all a fan of 'this' MJ. Zendaya could have made a fantastic modern take on the classic MJ but no.

LOL yeah, Flash isn't intimidating at all but I guess that's just the way they wanted him to be... an annoying d-bag who was never any actual physical threat.

And besides... Joe Manganiello already gave us the definitive version of comic book Flash. :o

I get that Zendaya's MJ is a very different character, but she would have been a great fit for the big personality comic book MJ, moreso than Miss Dunst. So why name her MJ, or make any of the other odd choices? Beats me. I blame Sony, even thought I have zero evidence to support this accusation. Anyhoo, the crew grew on me in the last movie and I'm fully accepting of this alterna-version.

And why is that?

Exactly. Off the top of my head...

- Aunt May prequel
- Sinister Six movie
- The Dark Tower "adaptation"
- "Like a turd in the wind"

When Flash calls Peter a D***wad in the trailer all I could think of was the fact that Flash didn't look imposing enough to be a bully. MJ could kick his a**.

:hehe:

I'm looking for actual information that says that the character mix and match came from Sony. Because I thought that Marvel Studios had actual full control over these movies.

We need a poll over which high school insult was better. "D***wad" in Spider-Man: FFH or "D***splash" in Man of Steel.

I vote for the latter just because I've never heard anyone use that insult before and for the life of me, I'm not even sure what it means. If anything, it sounds like it could be a compliment. I mean, if you're standing in ankle-deep water and your manhood is touching that water, well then, that's something to be proud of.

I really hope she grows on me in this movie. Not that I have a problem with changing things up, but as a character I just wasn't a big fan of her in Homecoming.

i'm fine with race bending, but i would prefer if they actually tried to make these characters resemble somewhat to their comic book counterparts.
make revolori hit the gym so his flash looks like a jock. give betty brown hair, instead of turning her into gwen lookalike.
and have enough respect for zendaya to let her play mary jane watson and dye her hair red.

As someone who only relatively recently finished high school, Tony's Flash is far more accurate to the bullies I knew in real life than the old "beat you up for your lunch money" cliche.

She was a boring character. I’d be fine with her becoming the real MJ if they really went for it, but this joke thing they’re doing at the moment isn’t really working for me and it seems a waste.
