Far From Home Zendaya IS MJ

Thats kinda always been the misguided view of Marvel studios. once they got spidey it was assumed they would perfect everything about Spider-man and give fans everything they wanted... that wasn't so much the case.

I think asking for perfect is a bit deluded however I was definitely hoping for something better when it came to the supporting cast.

Just saw MJ in the trailer.

Looking forward to seeing where they go with her character... Was she winding Peter up again or serious

I'm glad she's getting a few mentions in the reactions. I wasn't expecting that as MCU love interests have never been good enough to mention in the reviews. I'm looking forward to her arc and the relationship between her and Peter.

IMO they should've just named her Mary Jane. But oh well.

Seeing the red-hair pics for the first time today, she is very beautiful (not that she wasn't before). The red suits her.

Still kinda hoping that'll be her stage name when she is a model. Maybe even taking her mother's maiden name "Watson."

Or something, anything really.

But alas, here I am also hoping we see Gwen and Harry some day too. *sigh*

I'm with you.

MJ should be the opposite of Peter in many ways which I do not see in Michelle:

1) A party girl who is popular with the guys (with other girls jealous over the attention they give her)
2) Super confidant and outgoing and all about having fun, socially smart (not academically)
3) Into the latest fasion, pop culture, entertianment, dancing and music

That sounds really cliché ... glad they changed it.

Agree with everything except the Gwen part.

That seems unnecessary though. they had no reason to change it in the first place, let alone try and correct it now.

And why would they care at this point? the films are doing fine.

How is girl who party's to hide her pain of a troubled homelife, more cliche than social outcast girl whose abrasive until she softens?

Why wouldn't they want to try to make the character the comic version, if they want to tell Spider-Man stories? Why, if they don't want to use the characters that are apart of the world in the way their characters are? There's adapting and there's more giving the names or initials to new characters, with no real reason as far as I can tell. Why not have Zendaya play a red head named Mary-Jane Watson who hides the pain of her troubled homelife behind a mask of popularity and partying? etc.

I think only Kevin Feige knows why he wants to make a different MJ from the comics, no one except him knows the answer to your question. I think what GuestStar2004 meant was that usually adapted characters are similar to how they are in the comics, but in cases where they are made different (for whatever reasons), it's very unlikely that in the future they somehow are changed back to be like in the comics.

I hope they don't take Michelle's character in that direction. That would be even worse than what we already have.

You guys make it sound like Feige is often beholden to the comics. He isn't. He's approved tons of heavy changes to the characters, their backstories, and their arcs across all these films.

Peter is a loner and an outcast. MJ should be the opposite. Guys all over her, socially confident and aware.

Her persona in her early days should parallel with Peter's persona when he puts on the Spider-Man mask. Peter should act confident and tell jokes while hiding his fear and pain. In the same way, MJ wears the mask of being the constant party animal and all about having fun to cover her own demons.

Anyway, enough of my rant...

This is exactly the comic version, and also what they've never gotten even close to right in the movies.
Considering the character's importance and decades-long history in the comics I find Marvel Studios' disrespect of her very surprising

wow you just turned MJ into one of the most cliché and generic characters in the MCU
she sounds like she belongs in another Mean Girls movie and not in a Spider-man film lol

I always liked Michelle so Im happy they did not go in that direction with her character

You guys make it sound like Feige is often beholden to the comics.

I really didn't mean to imply it at all. I don't read comics and I had never consumed any SPM products before SPH so I don't even know how much he changes things in the movies. My post was purely to reply to fan4stic; they asked "Why wouldn't he want to make MJ in the movie similar to MJ in the comic?" and I replied that no one except Feige knows the answer to that question.

I think he just wants to mix things up from the previous Raimi and Webb films and sometimes tries a little too hard.

Did you read any Spider-Man comics from the mid 80s to the mid 2000s at all?

I don't think it's more cliche than social outcast who softens. But Mary-Jane is also someone who apparently uses popularity and partying to hide her pain.

I think Feige and others just like the original Michelle character and preferred her over Mary Jane. Then they gave her the nickname to tell the audience that in this universe, Michelle is the one.

I'll wait till I see Far From Home before deciding which character I prefer.

So you have no respect for one of the biggest characters in all of the Spider-Man mythos.

I'm guessing from seeing previous posts by Leo, that he is not well versed in comics.

It may seem cliche when you don't know how that plays into Mary Jane's character. Yes, at first she seems to be flighty and superficial. But it's only a facade. She uses that 'mask' as a way to hide her pain from having a troubled home life. In the end, we learn that MJ is a deeply compassionate, warm, caring and thoughtful person. It's seriously one of the best character arcs.

I think he just wants to mix things up from the previous Raimi and Webb films and sometimes tries a little too hard.

They've made a bevy of changes to characters throughout the MCU. The changes made to Spider-Man are in line with everything else. Though with the supporting cast it does feel like change for the sake of change.

I think Spider-Man would've been better off if Sony and Marvel worked out a deal before making the ASM movies. In a better world, that would've happened.
