It depends on the area, in the middle of a jungle like the Congo they'd be gone within a couple of weeks, the mix of bacteria, heat and humidity would do them in.
Somewhere like the Sudan they'd dry out fast, but they wouldn't rot as soon.
Somewhere like Iceland would be where they'd thrive, it would take years and years for them to rot.

totally. it was compromised by idiots. otherwise, something like that would be a great place to hide out, what with the level of security and the facilities it offered. the only bad part about it was the lack of easily accessible escape routes. they had to run through that cave system where those zombies were hiding out and make it to that one ladder to the surface. i still think the mall in the first dawn of the dead was a bit more suitable, since there were so many supplies and they could still access the roof and fly their chopper out of there.

The point is you don't have to leave, those silos carried enough MRE's and water for a large group of people to stay down for years. Not to mention it would be full of weapons like any other military installation.

Just one gun? 12 gague shotgun loaded with buckshot. And a couple fanny packs full of extra shells.

More than one, the shotgun and a 9mm with a couple fanny packs of extra shells, and several clips.

And I'd also have my 2 knives and either a crowbar or baseball bat.

Shotgun isn't smart. They don't hold that much shells and you have to reload one shell at a time which isn't enough time when you have a horde after you or even if you're cornered. It's good only for enclosed spaces. Otherwise, an automatic assault rifle is a good choice.

I would have a shotgun for close encounters, it can be very devastating in such proximity. But overall use would be an assault rifle of some kind (Preferably with a scope), and to be safe, carry a pistol. Sometimes you'll be in cramped areas and you might not be able to swing a shotgun or rifle around very easily.

shotguns actually aren't all that handy, scattered shot doesn't kill the creatures u need to take the head, break the neck, or do significant damage to the brain, a shot gun (with buck shot) is just going to rip them up a bit and alert all their companions as to where lunch is...

give me a .45 with an extended clip and plenty of hollow point shells... you know what, the hell with fire-arms gimmie a nice quiet reusable Ice Axe, a trench knife, a Hunting bow with bear hunting arrow heads and plenty of shafts, a couple of Kurkri, and a Katana.
