Justin Theroux Readying 'Zoolander 2' For Ben Stiller And Paramount
By Nikki Finke | Category: Breaking News | Wednesday February 24, 2010 @ 4:28pm

EXCLUSIVE: What's better than being really, really ridiculously good-looking like Zoolander? Being really, really ridiculously good-looking in the 2001 cult classic's sequel. Finally, Paramount and Ben Stiller are pulling together a PG-13 Zoolander 2 with Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2 writer Justin Theroux who'll also direct. I've learned that Ben and Justin are working on the script together, and Theroux is going to Fashion Week in Paris to "immerse himself on what is current in fashion". "It's got momentum," a studio source just told me. Everyone's hoping Owen Wilson co-stars again but no deal is set. The villain likely will be Jonah Hill who's in negotiations.

If you remember, Zoolander came out on September 28, 2001, right after 9/11 so no one ever saw the pic in theaters. But it was a hot DVD and is still a bestseller on iTunes. And when Ben Stiller goes overseas, he's always asked to do "Blue Steel" which is saying a lot about a movie that earned only $45M domestic and $16M international because of its lousy timing. The problem is that no one's sure what the sequel can do because the original was so thwarted. Paramount wants to keep the budget below $50M so what's being discussed is some upfront reductions in exchange for bigger upsides. And yet everyone still really wants to do the pic in order to bring Derek and Hanzel to life again.

Theroux was just on Parks & Rec as Leslie's boyfriend and if he's behind the sequel it should be good.

"I can dere-lick my own balls thank you"

Bring on the sequel. :awesome:

Best comedy ever made man. I can't believe it's taken them this long to get a sequel goin. It's a shame to co's ben Stiler is showing his age these days & I dunno if after all this time it'd feel the same watching it co's of that. I know ppl age but I think a sequel in 04 would have been more appropriate. Still who am I to complain, bring it on!.

RDJ has to be a favourite for a cameo. Or perhaps Kirk Lazarus.

I think I'd rather RDJ be the villian rather than Jonah Hill. Don't get me wrong, I love Jonah Hill, he's become one of my fav ppl to watch & I hope he is infact in Zoolander 2 but RDJ just fits the villian role more IMO. Still it's gonna be a good show.

Did Jonah Hill and Ben Stiller become besties or something?

Yes, thier both jewish. Jewish actors often cast each other in thier own movies, it's become like a tradition, kinda like the brat pack of the 80's only more jew. I like it actually, all these jewish comedians are hilarious, I hope it keeps goin for a long time to come.

Zoolander is one of those stupid, but funny movies

i enjoyed Will Ferrell's performance

but get someone else to play the villain. i don't like Jonah Hill

The only thing I found funny about the movie was the gasoline fight. I actually walked out of it when I saw it in theaters. I love how the studio says it wasn't a success at the box office because of 9/11, wouldn't a stupid comedy be a nice distraction from the aftermath of that.

Funny that Zoolander is a rip-off the novel Glamorama by Brett Easton Ellis, when Theoux stared as Timothy Price in Ellis' adaptian American Psycho...

This sequel needs Ferrell as Mugatu, and oh hell no to Jonah Hill. He's a lame fat piece of crap and all of his humor is tasteless, people should stop giving him work as well.

But the movie has a massive following. It is true that Ben Stiller is asked several times to do his blue steel look.
Hell when Empire Magazine had Steven Spielberg as the guest-editor , they also had a photo special with several actors and acress in their iconic roles. Hopkins & Foster for Silence of the Lambs , Mel Gibson for Braveheart , Sam Neill for JP and Ben Stiller for Zoolander.

As for your 9/11 comment. You really think that when Americans are hit for such a massive tragedy in their recent history , something that truly shook their foundations , they'll all go the movies ? 9/11 had such a big impact on everyone lives that it took almost a year before they started going back to the movies like they did in the past. Spider-man is a proof of that.

Apart of me wants this to happen. It could be so awesome. Maybe it's something that could only work once.

But RDJ as the villain could be awesome. I could definitely see that. Just imagine him with alot of eyeliner. Hill is meh.

Is it going to be called "Son of Zoolander"?

This movie is going to be awesome or it's going to be terrible. Let's wait and see.

Zoolander is one of those movies that makes me laugh like an idiot every time I watch it. It's silly and nonsensical, which is what makes it fantastic. :D

^This scene cracks me up every time.

I think 9/11 did play a role, maybe not a major role but people may not have been aware of the movie. Stiller pulled out of hosting SNL since he was in no mood to be funny and didn't do any talk shows to promote the movie. He did Howard Stern in October after the movie was already out. People stayed home and watched TV in September/early October.

Monsters, Inc. and Harry Potter had great opening weekends in November but September and October 2001 were mostly full of crappy movies.

It still made a profit and just like Austin Powers it found an audience after the theatrical run.

Zoolander in 9 min
