Film 📽️ THE CINEMA LOUNGE

General Film
That's why I watch them at home so I can take snack and pee breaks. Stretch the legs.
It’s not just that. The stories themselves don’t seem to need the length to being with.
I generally don't mind long movies, but I feel like the recent slew of them have just been tedious and needlessly long (haven't seen Beau yet). The only 3-hour behemoth I've seen in the last year that was actually entertaining all the way through was RRR honestly.
See I didn’t care for RRR that much and the length played a part in it. The only new 3 hour movies I have been able to tolerate recently are The Batman and I guess John Wick 4 (even then I felt the length in spots).

Still can’t see myself watching Babylon, Avatar 2 or Beau is Afraid anytime soon or maybe at all. These 3 hour + behemoths are tiresome.

Me having seen all three...

It's all about pacing. For me, The Batman, Avatar 2, and John Wick 4 all flew by compared to something like Tàr, which is a little shorter at 2 hours 38 minutes but felt like an eternity because it crawls to the finish.

Speaking of long ass movies, what the hell is up with Marvel and these 150 min flicks? I got it with Spider-Man, because you know, the Multiverse. But Wakanda Forever and now GotG is 150mins? These can no longer be fun, breezy experiences. They are investments, without the quality to make it worth the time.

Wakanda Forever was actually at the forefront of my mind when I made my "tedious and needlessly long" comment. Half of that movie had a story to tell. The rest of it was...there.

At first I was annoyed at Chapek's brief "2-hour" mandate for Marvel movies, but idk, maybe that fool was onto something, because they could really use an editor. :o

You could cut a lot from Wakanda Forever, starting with Martin Freeman.
Wakanda Forever would have benefitted from the removal of the Everett Ross/Elaine Benes sideplot. Give Martin Freeman a quick cameo by keeping the first scene where Okoye and Shuri find him on a run in the woods and that's it. It still would have been a little long but the pacing would have been better.

I'll give the longer length of GOTG Vol. 3 the benefit of a doubt since it's supposed to act as a "finale" of sorts but most of the MCU movies shouldn't need to exceed a 2 hour, 10 minute runtime.

Funny enough though, for all the flack that Love and Thunder gets, I think that one could have benefitted from an extra 10-15 minutes to give us more Gorr at the very least.

I agree that pace matters. It was the same when saw JFK in the theater. I had no idea almost three hours had passed. I did notice with Titanic and Avatar but I'm older now and my bladder has shrunk with age, lol.

I personally enjoy long flicks, IF they are good. Most of the classics were long. I do now prefer to experience them newer longer flicks in the comfort of my home tho, especially with a smoke. Scorsese is my favorite, but no way in hell I'm going to the theater to watch his 4 hour plus flick and Beau is Afraid not worth a theater experience either to me.

The Batman and JW4 flew by.

Yeah, long movies don't bother me, either -- as long as I'm at home lol. I loved all three Lord of the Rings directors cuts and those were near 4 hours each.,

Jesus Christ... can Joe Russo stop talking for two seconds? Please, I beg.

To be fair, he was literally asked the question about AI, so he answered. It’s not like he started talking about it on the street to some random stranger. Haha

Yeah, recent court rulings have kind of killed AI stuff. You can't copyright AI stuff, so, you can't really make money off it.
Still not going to stop Joe Russo from making AI movies starring himself and Marilyn Monroe for his own personal enjoyment. :o

Pacing is definitely a huge part of it but for me it’s also just the subject matter. I don’t really have a desire to see a Boogie Nights/Wolf of Wall Street pastiche (Babylon) right now. Nor am I in the mood for a generic Sci-fi adventure (Avatar 2). I quit Tar after 1 hour because the material was just so dry and couldn’t care less about it.

I don't mind long movies as long as I'm locked into it or if the movie itself is that fascinating to watch. I think the trend for longer movies is probably because of two things that happened in the past couple of years. Because of Covid, there was less output of theatrical movies so there wasn't a demand from the studios to cut their movies shorter to fit into more theaters. The 2nd reason is that a lot of the directors were given final cut because they either earned it or it was given to them because of status. And they obviously want to get away with their version of the movie without any oversight no matter how long it is because they are probably not gonna get this chance again from these major studios.

I will say I’m most interested in Beau because I think the topic is interesting. I just don’t like Ari Aster’s movies so I’m hesitant to even try.

You'll probably enjoy it. Beau is basically a dark comedy adventure film that feels like a stage play. It seems like people who thought it was another Ari Aster horror film are the ones who are hating it and they didn't know it was a neurotic comedy.

For me there is a section of the movie that could have been cut out and released as a short film because it kinda belabors the point. It looked beautiful though.

I’ll give it a try at some point. I saw it described as Aster’s version of Pee Wee’s Big adventure, and I liked that one quite a bit.

Yeah that's the perfect description, it's a super dark and Jewish Pee Wee’s Big adventure.

And I'll say this, I saw both Beau and Evil Dead Rise on the same day and the only movie I keep thinking about since then is Beau.

Well… you can try. But “your” work won’t have any legal protections. So, someone else can copy it and sell it as “theirs.” I suppose it’s analogous to a public domain situation.

Just another reason to skip using it altogether.
