Film 📽️ THE CINEMA LOUNGE

General Film
I've never seen the whole movie but I can see why some don't like the ending. Not even just the "I need a happy ending" crowd. From what I've seen of the movie and read, it does kinda come out of nowhere.

I think it's a good ending. But just because it's a shocking twist. Not because it's clever or well thought out.

Well I do think it's clever and well thought out. It's the theme the movie they set out with talking about what can humanity do to each other when they're in a stressful situation. And I honestly think it's more of a hopeful ending if you think about it (maybe not to the main character) because it pretty much gives you a lesson of not giving up.

But then again, The Mist is my favorite horror film of all time that I watch every October so I might be bias. Either way, it's always fun to read reactions to that movie.

Just putting this here too. Good sign for the return of cinema with so many films doing well in one weekend.

It's amazing how the top four are all doing so well, and all being different kinds of films. Elvis opened great for this more adult viewing audience, Top Gun obviously an anomaly, Jurassic World performing about as well as FK, and The Black Phone opening great for an original horror film.

Agreed with that. I’m not a horror buff at all and this was suitably disturbing for me throughout, but I think the film was effective horror before that ending and then enhanced further by it.

I really like the ending of The Mist.

Yeah, this makes me really happy. Great to see people are not only just seeing movies, but seeing a decent variety of films. I was reading that had Lightyear reached the $20M mark this weekend, it would've been the first time since 2016 that the top five films in a single weekend grossed $20M domestically, which is cool. I hope it's this continues.

I noticed Netflix added The Mist and it's on their top 10 list...so naturally i'm reading all the reactions on twitter and of course, they are losing their sh**. lol

The Mist has one of the greatest endings of all time (precisely because of it being *technically* a hopeful ending yet utterly devastating on a personal level) and I hold these posters directly responsible for the death of cinema. I have no apologies.

Anyone else feels like 2019 was one of the greatest movie year ever? Everyone loves to bring up 1999... or 1982... or even 2007, but I can guarantee that folks years from now will look back at 2019 just like we are with 1999.

Just a refresher of what came out in 2019:

Parasite
The Lighthouse
The Farewell
Midsommar
Knives Out
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Marriage Story
Uncut Gems
The Last Black Man in San Francisco
Ready or Not
The Farewell
1917
The Nightingale
Hustlers
Jojo Rabbit
I Lost My Body
Ford v Ferrari
Us
Waves
The Irishman
Joker
Doctor Sleep
Ad Astra
Pain and Glory
Little Women
Avengers Endgame
Shazam

Films that are generally considered bad/not good by the masses, but that you can rewatch.

The Order
Vanilla Sky
The Ninth Gate

I rewatched part of The Ninth Gate last night. I know this film doesn't work. This is subpar by Polanski standards, the ending doesn't work, but I still can't look away. Every damn time...I keep watching. I guess tis' because I would've made the same mistakes the leads in these movies made. I would've gotten in the car with Cameron DIaz in Vanilla Sky. I would've hooked up with Shannyn Sossammon character while being a priest. Made sweet love to the monster of babylon and probably bringing onto the end of the world etc...

I would have done all of the above too

Social media shifting the definition of "Film Bro" from "dude who thinks he's a deep intellectual because he over-explains Tarantino" to "anyone who thinks I should engage with thoughtful media from time to time" is... a concern.

Yeah there seems to be more and more filmbros of the Tarantino type running around on youtube and twitter (especially letterboxd) that is ruining it for everyone who loves film.

Yeah, I've been seeing all those weird "Film Bro" memes. While there are the occasional funny one, the majority are just really lame. Seems to just be people railing on anyone that even slightly ventures outside the big franchise blockbusters.

Also some of those memes are confusing especially to me who has watched something like Moonfall and Jackass Forever and then immediately watch something like Parallel Mothers and Drive My Car right after. But hey maybe that means i'm not a film bro. :o

I’ve never even heard of the term “film bro” until right now. Lol

Film bros in a classic sense are bros that just discovered mainstream auteur directors like Tarantino and Scorsese for the first time and wouldn't shut up about them.

But now people on twitter and tiktok are thinking film bros are just people who watches anything other than mainstream films.

You venture outside mindless cinema? How pretentious :o

Top Gun 2 inspired me to do a Cruise marathon this long weekend. Gonna try and rent Born on the Fourth of July (never seen it) and squeeze in another screening of Top Gun 2 on Monday before the BBQs

As to why I don't have Fallout in 4k...I just started buying 4k Blu Rays and I'm weird and it'll bother me that Fallout in 4k won't have the same white spine as the other MI movies :ninja:. And surprisingly Minority Report hasn't been released on 4k yet. It also has a terrible Blu Ray cover

Mostly doing action movies otherwise I'd do Collateral , Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, and Jerry MacGuire. Maybe even Tropic Thunder
And nah I'm not doing Oblivion in the marathon. Don't need to fall asleep :ninja:

Want to pick up a new UHD this month but can't decide between The Thing in 4k or Predator in 4k. I actually haven't owned predator in years but I do have the shout factory The Thing from a few years back. Heard the new 4k transfer for it is incredible! Simply can't decide though. What do you guys think?

After rewatchinf Mission Impossible III-VI this weekend I'm going to jump out the window and say...
1) Mission Impossible is the best spy series ever
2) It's the greatest action series ever.

They're just so incredible.

If you haven't decided yet, I would go Predator. The new The Thing transfer looks great, but the difference in quality between Predator's newest home release vs previous ones is vast. When people say it's one of the best 4k transfers, they're not joking.
