1984 - Anyone read it?

What scares me about The Party in 1984 is that I don't see how that system can ever be toppled or stopped. I need to read it again, it's been too long.

Who wants to talk about the ending?

Talk, ill listen.

Quite interesting...

Yup I read it about 1984! I found it a very good read and still pertinent.

Then why are you like that?

Like what? A believer in free speech? As the words of John Lennon go:-

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

I've read it and enjoyed it, however IMO Animal Farm is the better Orwell book

You're all, like, against Islam and stuff. And correct me if I'm wrong (possible i've got you mixed up with someone else) but you support the "war on terror", don't ya?

I just don't see how someone that has the intelligence to read 1984 and finds it relevant to today could believe in such nonsense as "war on terror".

I'm not against Islam (any more than I am against other religious belief systems that is), I am though against the actions of some Muslims, as the words of John Lennon go.

I'd say [BLACKOUT]Yes, because Smith says they should torture Julia, thus betraying her. This destroys their love. :([/BLACKOUT]

But there was that moment when they met briefly after the Ministry of Love.

[BLACKOUT]Yes but there love had died, that's clear[/BLACKOUT]

Off to bed cya, read Fahrenheit 457 if you liked it.

loved 1984
as well as brave new world, fareheit 451, the chrysalids and a clockwork orange.

must see the john hurt movie (1984)...really not a fan of the clockwork orange movie or the farenheit 451 movie, or any version of brave new world to be honest.

Read 1984 this summer for my College English Class and it was a fantastic book, however it still falls behind Animal Farm IMO as far as Orwell's classics go.

oh you just walk away at the right time and everyone walks away the same. there aren't enough sociopaths around to deal with mass rebellion. it's all about the timing. when they send an army you let them come, you welcome them. you give them no reason to believe the lies about you. give them gin better than victory gin :) then eventually let them know that 2+2 actually = 4.

One of my favorites...good read.

My sister read it for school over the summer and hated it. I personally have never read it.

They've made it impossible to organise even a tiny group of free thinkers, nevermind a mass rebellion. Most people wouldn't want a rebellion (or would they? Very hard to judge peoples true opinion). They monitor you wherever you go, they even let you think you aren't being watched just so they can study how rebellers think. For the slightest infractions, you get sent to the Ministry of Love where your will is completely and utterly shattered.

i'm about to start brave new world, is it any good?

this doesn't require orginisation. just timing. if the timing is right then orginisation happens after that. people need to be inspired to do the same and quickly. in 1984 it is the lower class that needs inspiring.

Mal, you never read 1984? WEll, you are now, so that's cool. Read it 1st in high school; always have a beaten up PB copy on my bookshelf.

What's not to love, O'Brien, the dark haired girl inthe Fiction Dept., 3 mins Hate

Not exaclty the feel good book of the month... I loved how depressing and bleak it was.

You guys should try to watch the movie version by Michael Radford, with John Hurt as Smith and Richard Burton (his last movie) as O'Brien. It's very close to the book moodwise and has one of the greatest opening scenes ever. It actually made me want to shout at the screeen against Goldstein.

Big Yes!!! It's in my opinion far better than1984 but it's a far greater extrapolation.

Huxley Rocks

When you're done with Brave new World, try his 'Doors of Perception.' Philosophical musings more than fiction, but no less engaging.
