It still really doesn't justify Tebow. They're spending first round picks and money on a quarterback, when they don't really need one (they have a good quarterback and a servicable back up already) with the intent for him to be a back up. Orton is young. He's only 27 and so far he's only showing signs of improvment. So a first round draft pick for a quarterback with potential to be a back up for 5 to 7 years. I just don't see how its justified.
When you draft Tim Tebow, you know you are getting a player who is dedicated to doing anything he can for your team to win. If Sam Bradford fails, which I think he will, will he still have value as a football player? No.
If Tim Tebow fails, and I don't think he will, will he still have value as a football player? Yes.
Denver did good.
Norman and I agree on this
I think Denver is planning long term...Orton will start and there will be an open competition for the #2
Exactly.
People also need to realize that Orton has a one year contract. He will need a good year to keep his job. Brady Quinn and Tebow could be angling for the starting job come 2011.
The part I disagree with is the fact they traded a 2nd, 3rd, AND 4th round pick to move up a few slots just to go get Tebow. He's not worth that much, and without a veteran QB OR coach to learn under in Denver, I don't think he's going to fully develop into a legit franchise QB. McDaniels is NOT Belicheck, and I don't care if he groomed Brady and Cassel, both those guys were used to pro systems. Tebow is a MUCH bigger project, and I don't think McDaniels has the tools to develop him on top of the fact he traded back so much only to jump forward when Tebow was going to fall into their lap anyway.
I hear that complain, and it isn't really a valid one. Your opinion is overlooking a few different factors.
For one: the third and fourth round picks (the true pieces of the trade as the 2nd was upgraded for the first rounder) are meant for trades like this. Remember, Denver made multiple trades on draft day.
The started Thursday with a first, two seconds, a third fourth, fifth and sixth.
They ended Thursday with two first round picks, a second, two thirds, a fifth and a sixth.
By playing around with draft placement, and still getting a guy they had valued at the 11th spot (which they did in Bey-Bey), they essentially got Tebow for nothing.
Furthermore, the 3rd round pick is clearly what Buffalo (who was trying to trade up for Tebow) was trying to offer to move up. Buffalo's pick comes before Denver - so they HAD to throw in another offer.
I ask you, if your team - through it's scouting department and the football opinion of everything you are paying to make these sort of decisions - has identified Tim Tebow as your future QB...do you not make that trade over a 4th round pick? Or a third round pick? Of course not.
I cant believe we passed on Dez Bryant for McCourty, I cant believe we passed on Dez Bryant for McCourty...just more evidence that Bill has lost it.
Tebow will do well in denver, but pick of the draft is Dez to Dallas. He puts them over the top. They will be scary next season. His #88 jersey will sell like hotcakes.
Lions also had an excelent draft. Suh and Jahvid will be big time stars immeadietly.
I cannot believe the Patriots passed on Dez Bryant.
The Patriots have lost it. They have gotten far too cute, believing their scouting is better than everyone else's. They had the chance to scare the NFL and they traded down.
Pathetic.
Good to see the Dolphins being cheap by trading their #12 pick for a #28 pick and getting a DT when they could have stayed and take a Derrick Morgan or a JPP.
You are complaining that the Dolphins were able to get a high second round pick and a third round pick in exchange for trading down and selecting a player that Bill Parcells would have had no problem selecting at 12?
You are now sitting there at 2-6 with Sergio Kindle on the board and the best 3-4 DE in the draft, plus extra picks to ensure you pick up a 3-4 NT tonight.
