2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions)

Exactly.
Joker is what made TDK such a phenomenon, period. The actor *and* the role. You don't have that same universal appeal and mystique with Tom Hardy as Bane.

Besides the Dark Knight . Heath Ledger was not a huge box office draw. The majority of his films flopped at the box office

When one of them shows up maybe we'll have a party.
I post there. Or am I one of those insane hole-dwellers you guys are going on about?

You want to argue with Fenrir? Fine. But don't take a cheap shot at good members who aren't even here to defend themselves.

I am talking about Fenrir and others of his ilk. The kind who waltz into threads and say **** like "Anyone who still maintains that The Avengers or The Hobbit can even match, let alone eclipse TDKR better prepare themselves to feast on some lovely crow" and then whine when called on it as if riling people up wasn't the exact reason they showed up in the first place. It happens on the Marvel boards all the damn time and people are sick of it.

he's not the only one that does this, the whole board is full of them. But if you aren't one of the ones doing it then there's no point acting insulted because no one is talking about you.

When you guys say "The Bat Boards," I'm assuming you're talking about everyone- seeing as how you're referring to it as one collective group. So you'll have to forgive me if I take offense, because I (and many respectable members) post in "that hole."

Maybe I'm just being overly sensitive, but a little specification would go a long way. You don't need to tell me about the fanatics that frequent that place, and I have no issue with you guys calling them out specifically. "The Bat Boards" just comes across as a blanket statement. That's all.

As for the situation at the Avengers Board, I thought starting TDKR/Avengers wars was a bannable offense? Didn't Spidey-Fan make a sticky stating as much?

If it's any consolation, I still love you.

I'm not really invested in the box office. But for the sake of contributing to this topic, I'd say that The Hobbit will ultimately come out on top world-wide. The hype for that movie is going to absolutely explode come Comic Con.

Yeah The Hobbit will probably take the prize for WW gross.

If any movie is being underestimated it's The Hobbit.

It's a film about Batman vs Joker, it was always going to make money. The morbid curiosity over Ledger's death just added a bit more.

Another one being underestimated is The Hunger Games. We, as CBM/sci-fi/fantasy fanboys may cringe to recognize that fact, but never underestimate the box office clout of the tweenage girl demographic. If this thing is truly poised to be the next Twilight, it could easily turn into the runaway hit of the summer.

Yeah, 'The Hunger Games' is a sure wild card. I know it will perform well domestically, but not sure how popular it is elsewhere in the world. In terms of worldwide appeal 'The Hobbit' has been translated into approx. 40 different languages, I think it will easily come out on top in WW boxoffice.

I'm still iffy on Hunger Games, I mean it could be another Twilight box office wise or it could be wildly overestimated. Right now, I just don't know what to believe.

I love Jennifer Lawrence so I hope it is good and is a hit.

The Hunger Games is coming out in March.

what has comic con to do with BO? IMO nothing. hype at comic con is fanboy hype. from 2003-2011 we have a lot fanboys movies that were hyped at comicon. but they bombed. :woot:

Hobbit and TDKR are movies that will make money because the general public will watch it. IMO :awesome:

Yeah, it's been proven that Comic con doesn't mean **** to the general public.

I think what he means is that the marketing machine for The Hobbit will start up big time around the time Comic Con is on. It's still 12 months away and the hype is huge. Imagine what it's gonna be like in 6 months time? Crazy.

Part of me just wanted to diss comic con out of a residual bitterness towards the nerds who gave it so much credence. "Scott Pilgrim and Kick Ass will be huge because of the response at comic con!"

It's a dick move but I made it anyway.

It's forgivable, I feel the same way.

I had no idea you love Jennifer Lawrence. :o

Exactly. Comic-Con never really affected the general audience at all. You had movies come there, and spend so much money only to have small returns.

Even if THG makes as much as Twilight it will still fall well below The Hobbit worldwide. This summer is a showdown between The Hobbit and TDKR, plain and simple.

^ Summer if you're in Australia for The Hobbit. ;)

I desperately want to ignore the hypocrisy located above me, but I can't, so I'll just state this:

No Avenger or Man of Steel poster has the right to claim such nonsense regarding the condition/mental-state of the Batboards when the Avenger and/or Man of Steel boards have reach the same level of menial lunacy.

Now, am I trashing every poster in those forums? No. There are reasonable fans in both, but please, ladies and gentlemen, stop with the 'Batboard' swipes, especially if you've been to or posted in one of those boards. It's oxymoronic.

----------------

My prediction for 2012?

1.) Hobbit (successful trilogy; Peter Jackson)
2.) TDKR (probably domestic king)
3.) TAS (upset pick; Marvel's most popular superhero)
4.) The Avengers
5.) Skyfall
6.) The Hunger Games
7.) Breaking Dawn PT. 2
8.) Prometheus
9.) MIB 3
10.) Dark Shadows
