Mark of the Ninja is one of my favourite games of all time. Playing it I can't but help but feel that the traversal mechanics could make for a perfect 2D superhero game.

So my questions are these:

1. What are the best 2D Spider-man/Batman/non-flying-swinging-superhero games out there?

2. Is there demand for a modern equivalent?

I’ve never played any of the 2D Spider-Man games but I loved the hell out of Batman Returns for the SNES back in the day.

I think I've tried all the portable Spidey games. The DS one, I don't remember which, had this panoramic view and that was neat.
The Ultimate games were probably ahead of the curve since you can actually play as Spidey or Gobbie/Venom. Most replayable, for sure.

Spider-Man Mysterio's Menace is an underrated GBA gem. That might be one of the best 2D Spidey games, didn't play any of the later DS Metroidvania style games but I heard they were good and also overlooked.

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin on Genesis is also a really solid 90s 2D Spidey game, gets even more solid if you have the upgraded Sega CD version with a ridiculous rock soundtrack, more polish, more villains, and hilariously good animated cutscenes.
