3 Halo Killers in 08?

Came across this article and i figured id share it. If this thread needs to be merged into another then do so. Anyway, this site lists 3 potential Halo killers set to drop in 08.

Resistance 2

Killzone 2

Rainbow Six : Vegas 2

So, what do you guys think? Could the goliath known as Halo go down in 08? Will these be the games to do it? Now the author defines "Halo Killer" as a "FPS so good, that people will talk about it more than Halo". If thats the case then yea, i could see these games taking Halo down....for a few days. But overall I'm gonna say NONE of these games will come close to taking Halo down. They DEFINITELY wont do Halo 3 numbers nor will they create the PR buzz. So, again, what do you guys think?

Halo wasn't that good, perhaps for a console it was, in pc terms, it's pretty average, good at best, most pc mags reviewed halflife much higher.

Yea, but NO PC game has the buzz that Halo does. Most of us all agree that in terms of pure gameplay, there are many games better than Halo.

The put a big marketing budget on it for adds and such but they weren't responsible for the Halo killer stuff.

I think for an awesome fps come, it's needs to radically change the formula, after couple of years, the pretty graphics, cool weapons and such, just start to a degree, feel like "same old same old" with diffrent skins.

Have to say though, Rainbow 6 vegas feels like it took steps backwards than forwards.

Most people tend to agree that Portal did just that, just that it was too short.

Portal was a puzzle game, not an FPS though. Sure, it was first person, but it was by no means a shooter.

Define shooter. I don't see why something has to involve killing people to be a shooter. Portal had a gun that allowed you to shoot portals. It changed what an FPS could be.

Not all the time, but in that case.....

You're right to an extent, but don't kid yourself as to thinking the ONLY reason Halo has been so successful is because of its marketing. Its a solid FPS thats easy to pick up and play. Its one of the reasons why you come across so many pre-pubescent little kids shouting obscenities into the mic. It also has a MUCH better party system than many of the FPS out today(yes, its even better than the beloved CoD4).Im by no means a Halo fan, i prefer more realisitc shooters, ie Rainbow Six and Call of Duty, but if you are a fan of shooters and feel Halo is anything less than a great total package, then youre just kidding yourself.

Oh yeah, like I said Halo 3 was a good game...But yeah your right about its "easy to pick up and play" attribute.

Rainbow 6 Vegas - Step Backwards - How come?

I think a nice feature a FPS could implement is "voice recognition".
So if I'm playing 'CoD4", I'd wear my head-set, and shout out orders, and my A.I team mates do it. In CoD4, everyone has names when you point your gun at them, so maybe you could give individual orders to certain team members by saying their name first, and then give the order. If the voice recognition could handle that, that would be great. It might take a while to implement if you cant pronounce a certain name correctly though.....

Wow, why do you guys care if people like Halo? They mainly like it for the multi-player.

In a shooter, you shoot things in an offensive manner. In Portal, you shoot portals to solve puzzles. It was a puzzle game.

Claiming it was anything else would be like saying Resident Evil (the original) was a 3rd Person Shooter, just because you have a gun, and it is in 3rd Person, when it's really a survival horror game.

Ugh, you people and your strict genre adherence.:whatever: Yes it was a puzzle game, that used an FPS interface. That better for you?

That could be cool, but what i want to see in an FPS more than anything is a TRUE cover system. What i mean by that is instead of zooming out to a 3rd person view when you take cover(ie Rainbow Six Vegas) the view point would remain in the first person. You could use the right stick to control the view and maybe click the RS to peer around the corner. I dont know if this would be plausible, but i think itd be cool.

Yeah I know what you mean.

In CoD4 for example (esp in Veteran mode), there's times when I need to look behind a wall and see where my enemies are, but the only way to do this, is by exposing my whole entire body to fire, by shifting left and right like a mad man, or standing up and then ducking repetitively like a chicken.
A "peering round the corner" while still in First person would add to the realism, and overall experience. The whole 3rd person view (like in Rainbow 6 Vegas) way of doing it is kinda cheating, because you see everything with the camera angle, despite the fact that the game's character has his back facing his enemies and is looking in the wrong direction.

Exactly.

I agree to an extent. But as quick as Halo fades when a new shooter comes out, it eventually rises right back to the top. Its like a f'ing phoenix.
Exactly! Halo never really gets old to me. I honestly played H2 since the day it came out from the launch of H3. And never got tired of it :word:

Ok, personally, I think that out of the three you have listed here, only one of them could possibly be a Halo competitor (I don't want to say "killer" because I don't think anyone's going to leave Halo to play this game).

If you've played the original Killzone, then you know how horrible it was. If the original sucks, you can usually bank on the sequel not being too great either, although you do come across those rare games that fixed all the problems from the first one in the sequel. Point being, I'm almost 98% positive we can rule Killzone 2 out as being a Halo competitor.

Rainbow Six, IMO, is just going to turn out like all the other RS games. You may have different missions, but in actuality, it's all the same crap. It's fun to play, but I just can't get into any of them seriously. I wouldn't play it every day like I do Halo, I know that for sure.

I have high hopes for Resistance 2, and from what I've read so far, it sounds like it may hang up there with Halo. I'll definately be giving it a test run.

As far as Campaign goes, I agree with you. I think the Halo storyline is boring and pointless. I have to say, however, that the online play is definatly my favorite thing to do at this point. I tried CoD4, but I just couldn't get into the game like I did Halo. Not to turn political, but I think half of me not liking CoD4 as much as I thought I would has to do with the fact that it deals with the war at present, and I don't agree with the war in Iraq at all. CoD4 is a great game, don't get me wrong, I just don't like the "real-life" allusion aspect of it. I'd rather play a fictional military-style FPS than play one that simulates what some Americans are pointlessly dying/risking their lives for currently.

yea that was at gamepro.com they seem hellbent on destroying halo 3 even though they gave it a 5/5 and called it one of the best games ever. i still think halo 3 is the best fps ever on a console. cod4 goldeneye and halo 2 are some other greats of course. i kinda thought resistance got boring even being 40 players. the weapons just werent that great to me. killzone 1 was definetly not as good as any of those other games i mentioned, but killzone 2 looks good, but so did killzone 1 but the gameplay wasw the weak part. rainbow six was pretty damn fun though. i enjoyed shooting up a casino. i dont realy see it as a "halo killer" though.

and i say best ever on a console because i dont play pc games that much, but i still enjoy halo over any fps's i played on pc. take that counter-strike!

Thats a really dumb reason not to play Call of Duty 4 tho.
