3 Musketeers cast

^ nope it is actually being shot in 3D

Really? Well, that's actually refreshing. A part of me still wonders why the Musketeers in general is being shot in 3D, but if it's done well, I don't have any qualms with it.

Hopefully the story-line will be done justice.

I really like the logo and being shot in 3-d might be a good idea. I want to see a darker version than what they did in 93. Are the 73 /74 versions really considered the best ones?

Well, they're my favorite. As others have said, they have similar dry humor to The Princess Bride, and also some great physical humor as well. They're also the most book-accurate movies I've seen. The only negative I have with them is that Constance is a little too ditzy for me. She was really only cast for her looks.

The first part of the story (73 movie) is much lighter and more fun, much like the first half of the novel. The 74 movie is much darker, again, like the second half of the novel. I also enjoy the films because not only do they have the most realistic sword fighting choreography, they actually used real swords when filming.

I need to watch the old Gene Kelly version to judge accurately, but I did watch that around the same time I watched the 70's versions, and I still preferred the 70's version the most.

I went looking for these films this weekend , i'll have to try amazon.

Yeah, most rental stores only carry new videos, and anything older then 20 years is pretty much only very popular classics. They can't afford to hold the more specialized stuff.

You'd have to check a library if you want to rent, but Amazon should have both movies in their two for one disc set called The Complete Musketeers. It's got a cool commentary by the cast done in the early 2000's too.

So has anybody heard anything about the other Musketeer film that's supposed to be in production? I had read somewhere they were going to make a film about Athos, Aramis, and Porthos meeting and becoming friends before they meet D'Artagnan.

That actually looks really badass.

I'm still cautious of this, what with them saying that the Duke is a villain, which is certainly a change from the original book, but I'm loving the look of the film so far.

I really want to see a pic of Waltz and Mikkelsen.

That's my favorite too. Did you ever see THE RETURN OF THE MUSKETEERS (1989) ?

I've wanted to see that one (the 70's version(s) are my favorite as well) but I've heard it's not that great.

The 89 version isn't as good as the two others, but it is a fairly fun romp...plus, considering it has almost all of the original cast back it's a must see just for that. I'm not sure if it's on DVD (I've never seen it at a store at least) but I still have a vhs copy as well as a DVD recording I did off of ENCORE movie channels last year.

Being a huge fan of Dumas I am hoping that this is done well. I'd like to see a big budget faithful adaptation of his work. My dream movie would be be a two or three part Monte Cristo starring Cassell as Dantes.

I'll probably be in the minority here (EDIT - just read above - nice to see I'm not alone!!!!) but I've personally always preferred the Richard Lester Musketeer movies to any other versions (I'm not even going to mention the 1993 crapfest). Even thinking of that cast in retrospect - Michael York, Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Charlton Heston, Faye Dunaway, Raquel Welsh, Joss Ackalnd, Christoper Lee. Wow.

Those movies had literally everything so any new version is going to have to be pretty damned good to top them in my book.............

Y'know what - it's literally just been on the tv just know over here in the U.K.

It's kinda the poor relation of the 3 movies and, ok, while it isnt as good as the 1st two its definately decent with some good moments - Kim Cattral was gorgeous in it (and looked more than comfortable in action) and C.Thomas Howell looked and acted like he was born to be a Musketeer. Plus, as you mention, it was great just to see the old (literally :D) cast back together again.

And it had what was possibly one of the best trailers that I can remember from my childhood.

Best one is Man in the Iron Mask.

The DiCaprio one or the Richard Chamberlain one?

Because like with the Musketeers - I'm afraid I have to go with the earlier one.

I've never seen the 73 version but I just ordered it for myself...had no idea Jean-Pierre Cassel was in it. His performance in Army of Shadows is amazing.

The Michael York Musketeers was the best. Think of 'A Princess Bride' in it's British humor.

BTW, has there ever been a strictly French version of the Musketeers? By a French filmmaker?

Exactly. And the reason I'm such a fan is because both of the Princess-Bride-esque humor as Octoberist put it and because thus far that version is the truest to the book version I've seen.

I am interested in watching Return of the Musketeers, because it's one of the few Musketeer films based on the 20 Years After book, a novel that most filmmakers pass over in lieu of Man in the Iron Mask when doing the stories of the older Musketeers.

I'm actually currently writing my own play version of The Three Musketeers. I've done some staged readings of it at my college, and we may actually do a full production of it next year, something I'm pretty excited about :)

I didn't know Ray Stevenson was playing Porthos. Looking forward to that.:yay:
