31 Nights of Halloween: 2021 Edition

uIQPQlS.gif
Classic.

Tonight I'm rewatching Malignant to start things off.
We are doing that one tomorrow night. I'd have saved it for Halloween week, but it won't be on HBO Max soon.

Ended up watching 30 Days of Night instead tonight. 7/10 for me. Decently entertaining, but I hated the editing on this movie. So many abrupt cuts, and the "camera shake" in action shots made it too hard to tell what was going on most of the time.

To the movie's credit, it definitely had the most vicious. cold-blooded, and fast-moving vampires I think I've ever seen.

Watched Naked Lunch (I know not technically horror) and In the Mouth of Madness recently. Both are great

I always recommend Peter Bogdanovich’s first film TARGETS this time a year starring Borris Karloff. It is not a traditional horror film by any means. Karloff essentially plays a fictional version of himself, a washed up horror actor who feels his brand of horror is not scary anymore. Meanwhile, a young man kills his wife and family and begins a mass shooting spree across California. Real horror juxtaposed with film horror. It’s terrific.

I just rewatched it for the second time ever this morning. I enjoyed it, but I definitely don't think it's as great as some people make it out to be. I have the same issues as you and same praises as well.

31 Nights of Halloween 2021:

1.Wrong Turn - The Foundation

So, night one is over and it ended with a huge Dissapointment.
Finally watched the new Wrong Turn reboot after being quite excited for it for a while as fan of the series.
Well Okay, i like the first 2 and the third has its moments...the rest sucks.
Anyway, i do find myself watching WT 1 often and i like it, so thats enough justification to be excited. XD

And boy, they tricked me.
I expected a Hillbilly slasher with due to incest deformed Hillbilly murderers...and i got a cult of Boring people living in the woods just because, killing people.

I couldnt be bothered to care about the movie after that reveal because i felt cheated.
Why would you reboot a Hillbilly slasher series when thats not what you go for?
God damn it, i was super excited for this and got something boring out of it...i curse everyone involved and hope they have stones in their shoes for at least a month.

Hopefully the second night will entertain me more.

Kicking off the week with some golden age films that I hadn't seen yet. Watched Bride of Frankenstein this morning.

Night 1

1. Darkman
3ZNx0Ue.gif

Fun Size Review: Raimi's classic about fear, anger and misery, misery, misery. The influence from Burton's Batman is apparent, as is the commonality with Raimi's own Spider-Man. Fun fact. I grew up thinking the lead was Bill Nye, the Science Guy.

2. Tragedy Girls
hGEpw2m.gif

Fun Size Review: The leads carrying this fun, energetic little tale of aspiring serial killers. The 80's slasher storyline meshes perfectly with the 21st century aesthetic. Also, a surprising amount of known actors fill out the cast, and do so well.

3. Freaky

Fun Size Review: Kathryn Newton is as captivating , as Vince Vaughn is annoyingly dated in this fun romp. I really like this, but I do wonder how much better it would be, with an actor whose go to move for portraying women and gay men wasn't the limp wrist.

4. The Fanatic
0IPQncS.gif

Fun Size Review: An absolutely terrible and offensive movie, until it becomes utterly hilarious. Honestly, one of the most interesting character studies of the last few years. Not of any of the characters, but the director himself.

5. Beetlejuice
fFF56WV.gif

Fun Size Review: An all time fav, that continues to befuddle me with how much it crams into so little . Seriously, how is this only 90 minutes with everything that happens? It has it all. Incredible performances, music, cinematography, editing, art direction, costume design. Everything. When daylight comes, I don't wanna go home.

31 Nights of Halloween 2021:

1.Wrong Turn - The Foundation
2.Awaken The Shadowman

So night 2 went less bad but still bad.
Awaken the Shadowman is at best a Drama that tries to add the Supernatural to a very boring, tedious, slow movie.
Its pretty much a bad CGI Shadow that shows up and is supposed to pull my strings.
But nothing about the movie is done in a way that works.
Its really not something special, the cover of the movie and the idea of The Shadow being, are the strongest part.
There is this one scene where a Woman comes into a room and suddenly the music slams into the scene, indicating there is a scare there...but i had to watch the scene 3 times before i realized the shadow in the corner was supposed to scare me.
But i didnt notice it because the scene was badly lit, the camera or anything drew my eye towards the shadow.
And honestly, im still not 100% sure if that was even supposed to be the scare.
That is the only scene that i remembered 10 minutes after the movie ended.

Do you guys think Edward Scissorhands fits october? I always felt it was more of a christmas flick but I plan on rewatching it this month because it's been a while.

Watched Prince of Darkness and the original Dawn of the Dead, a 6/10 and 7/10 respectively. Both quite flawed but decent

Watched Cabin In The Woods for the first time this morning as well as re-watched Addams Family Values, holy s*** Addams Family Values is so damn wonderful. So fun and perfectly casted.

Definitely a Christmas film for me. Very heartwarming.

In terms of Tim Burton films for October, Sleepy Hollow and Beetlejuice seem to be the two I go back to.

I think that and Nightmare Before Christmas fit into both categories honestly. Can watch them during both holidays and classify them as such.

Good points all around! Also the inclusion of Vincent price in Edward Scissorhands also makes me think it fits the Halloween season too.

Watched:

Prince of Darkness
They Live
The Hills have Eyes
The Fog
Malignant

Tim Burton seems to love the marriage of Halloween and Christmas between Edwards Scissorhands, Batman Returns, and Nightmare before Christmas.

Night 2

6. Sinister (New)
NBJ9GPb.gif

Fun Size Review: Sinister has a decent concept and mood, but is let down by an overbearing score and poor direction. A less blah director would have let this film breathe and build tension naturally, without spoiling every movement with the soundtrack. Also considering the story, it would have been nice to get to know the family. The best thing about this ones are the jump scares, that genuinely work pretty well.

7. Venom: Let There Be Carnage (New)
XoVhgrd.gif

Fun Size Review: This sequel is lean, mean and a lot of fun. It's refreshing that they realized what everyone liked about the first, and just made a sequel to fit that need. This won't win any awards, but I'd easily take it over DC's two offerings this year.

Probably won't be able to watch a movie every day this month, or make it all the way to 10/31 either since I'm moving at the end of the month, but will get as far as I can anyway. So that said:

1. 30 Days of Night (7/10)
2. Ghoulies (1/10), and Ghoulies II (3/10)

Neither of these were good, but the sequel was certainly more entertaining at least. The one thing I'll give these credit for is their practical effects though! Every time I watch a movie from the 80s (or before), I wonder how they did their practical effects. ;)

3. Malignant (7/10)

Went to go see this at the theater. Dang what a trippy movie. I went in expecting something along the lines of Wan's previous supernatural movies (Conjuring, Insidious, etc) so I was sorta disappointed this wasn't exactly that. Still entertaining though, and did not see that twist coming at all, which totally freaked me out. IMO the ending was a bit campy though. Was hoping for more of a traditional Wan-style stinger.

31 Nights of Halloween 2021:

1.Wrong Turn - The Foundation
2.Awaken The Shadowman
3.The Elf

Slowly i get the feeling this years theme is "Bad Movies" for my marathon.
Again a Horror movie i got tricked into because of the premise and the cool cover.
Nothing new, but always dissapointing when you have a movie that has a cool cover and great idea, but sucks.

As if the dull storytelling and bad actors wouldnt already be bad enough, they also do a incredible bad job at shooting this Puppet slasher/horror.
Whenever the Elf attacks someone, you can clearly see that its just the actor moving the puppet left and right...even thought they try to hide this by shaky camera and a blurry focus.
You can see that there was no effort put into the scenes with the Puppet.
You see the elf move via CGI, but that is even worse...the CGI is really bad.
Other than that, there is nothing there.
The opening scene does a decent job building tension etc, but 5 minutes after that, its already gone.
