Gosh this was rough. Never seen a movie try so hard and so little at the same time. Zombie is clearly wanting to capture that 'What We Do In The Shadows' vibe, but he ain't got it. The story finally starts to get fun once they get to LA, but then the movie just ends. It was fun to see Daniel Roebuck in something again, though. 1/5

I wish I loved this more than I did. So happy to have Henry Selick back and Key & Peele together again, but there's some major Mission Creep going down here. The script is just trying to do way too many things at once, and ultimately doesn't deliver 100% on all of them. The animation is amazing, though, and the voice performances fun, with a killer soundtrack. 3.5/5

So maybe trying to recover from a traumatic incident involving water by moving to a city with ALL THE WATER was not a great idea. Boy am I grateful for Donald Sutherland's poor choices, though, because Venice is so brilliantly haunting here. One of the best atmospheric horror settings ever - so much tension despite almost nothing actually happening for most of the movie. I got about 40 minutes into The Munsters and then shut it off. Somehow it was even worse than I thought it’d be.

Due to time differences between my country and most of yours, i wish you all already Happy Halloween.
Night 30 with a movie i heard a lot about and really doesn do that justice.

Malignant

What a wild ride when it starts, i mean WOW.
You kind of assume what is going on, but when its then revealed and all, that is totally crazy.
When you watch movies etc with such an idea, it never goes literally like this...but here it does and its insane.
And the Effects make it even better, such good effects to use this concept then, absolutely wild.
It was a fun ride this movie, i was entertained the whole film over.

IT: Chapter 1 (2017)
Charming coming of age horror. The kids are all well cast and have great chemistry. The scares are effective and well spaced. Skarsgård is just so freaking good in the role as Pennywise, and the imagery of this film heightens how scary the character is.

08b842c0460fd2b194e4ae41344d30702b03046a.gifv

IT: Chapter 2 (2019)
Has a lot of the same positives of the first. A wonderful cast that have a lot of chemistry, great performances, amazing imagery, and a lot of well executed scares. It is also way too long, comes across as a lot dumber, and gets super repetitive in the middle portion of the film. It's pretty much carried by the goodwill and care you have for the characters established in the first film.

86. The Shining

Spooky Review: What's colder, the weather or the performances? :rimshot:

A movie built off Kubrick's disdain for the original book and it's author, The Shining is a holiday classic, that's fun for the whole family.

4/5

87. The Crow

Spooky Review: The Nolans owe everyone involved with this classic royalties.

4.5/5

88. Fear Street Part Two: 1978

PRGqaw9.gif

Spooky Review: There is a really good Friday the 13th flick in here. The problem is, there is just too many characters and too much superfluous crap going on, for it to work as well as it could. Still, the core here is very fun and a bit heartaching.

3.5/5

89. Doctor Sleep

r2VWVzK.gif

Spooky Review: The director's cut, which is the only real cut of this flick, is utter perfection for two acts. And then they get to the hotel, and it all falls apart. Still, even at 3 hours, it's more then worth your time.

4/5

I fell short on making it to 31 films this month but here's some I did fit in.

4. Magic (1978)
5. Werewolf by Night (2022)

19. Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)
20. The Evil Dead (1981)
21. Evil Dead 2 (1987)

I kinda "cheated" by watching more than one movie on recent days for this final installment, but I'm glad I got up to 31 movies this year!

1. Smile [2022] 8/10
2. The Vigil [2019] 6/10
3. The Cursed [2021] 8/10
4. Pearl [2022] 7/10
5. Hatching 7/10
6. Titane 6/10
7. You Are Not My Mother 5/10
8. Jessabelle 6/10
9. Sea Fever 6/10
10. Amulet 5/10
11. Freaky 8/10
12. Candyman [2021] 6/10
13. Nightbreed [1990] 7/10
14. Halloween Ends 5/10
15. The Hunger [1983] 6/10
16. Case 39 6/10
17. Hellraiser [2022] 8/10
18. The Ring 8/10
19. Evil Dead [2013] 8/10
20. Nosferatu the Vampyre [1979] 9/10
21. Phantasm [1979] 3/10
22. Brightburn 7/10
23. Stephen King's Cat's Eye 6/10

The anthology type of approach to this one with the cat throughout ended up making it feel a bit unintentionally comedic, but it was a decently entertaining trio of individual plots nonetheless. It honestly didn't need the cat at all though, which made me expect a different type of movie.

24. The Dead Zone 8/10

A surprisingly well-made film, although I suppose I should've expected that since it was directed by Cronenberg (although he's had his share of misses over the years). Christopher Walken younger than I've ever seen him before in the earliest role that I've ever seen of his now, cementing him as a legend for me since his younger days. ;) Also Martin Sheen's line in this movie "I've had a vision I'm gonna be president of the United States one day" got a laugh out of me since he did in fact end up playing the POTUS on The West Wing.

25. The Turning [2020] 4/10

It was obvious this movie had potential but was really let down by its writing. So many things that could've been fixed with it, if the writing had gone through some more revisions. To its credit it was effectively creepy and had good cinematography, but the story just needed to be fleshed out more, and there were too many things that just didn't make sense or weren't explained at all.

26. The Incredible Melting Man [1977] 6/10

This was a very entertaining B-movie with a type of story that felt more fresh & original than most other sci-fi/horror movies I've seen, even from the era. It could've easily been a better movie if the writing & directing had been higher quality though. In a general sense it reminded me of Cronenberg's The Fly with the physical degeneration of the lead male character and the amount of "appropriately disgusting" practical effects, but in the end didn't have The Fly's emotional impact.

27. Uninvited [1987] 4/10

I saw this at a local theater screening, which was the best way to see it, because it was full of unintentionally comedic moments that had the audience cracking up. It was sort of what I thought Cat's Eye would be (i.e. a cat monster) and provided a good amount of schlocky campiness that you could only get from an 80s horror movie. Not good by any stretch, but still an entertaining watch with a crowd.

28. Cemetery of Terror [1985] 5/10

This one reminded me a TON of Halloween, Friday the 13th, and zombie movies in general with its general "slasher movie" approach, but still felt distinct enough from those and became its own thing. Although it wasn't very good and was also very contrived, still was a moderately entertaining watch.

29. Come Play 6/10

This was sorta uneven and could've been better with an improved script. Thematically it borrowed quite a bit from The Babadook, and ended up feeling like a lesser version of that movie. A lot of production effort into the movie was obvious, but unfortunately it was another case of a movie with potential being let down by its writing & directing.

30. Werewolves Within 8/10

I got interested in this after seeing how often it was being mentioned on other people's lists and have to say it was worth the watch, even if it was mostly because of the AT&T girl Milana Vayntrub. Not that the rest of the movie was terrible, but she really added to it a ton. I also have to call out the editing on this movie, which was just plain ace. The filmmakers knew exactly what they were doing with the editing and used it to really good effect. So many cuts that just had me rolling!

31. Scream [2022] 8/10

I don't remember Scream 3 and 4 very well but I guess I didn't need to, since this latest one had a well-contained story. IMO a solid installment in this franchise, although it did feel very derivative of the first Scream movie way too often. But it definitely delivered, and I don't mind that they're making another installment. I just hope it'll do something new, rather than re-tread old ground.

Didn't quite get to all the movies I wanted to this year, but I tried. And it being Halloween, I continue my tradition of watching the new Halloween movies.

24. Halloween (1978)

That classic that has spawned the franchise. Great pacing and wonderful characters. How Loomis is never acknowledged as the menace he is is a fun bit in the franchise.

25. Halloween (2018)

A great sequel. Tossing out everything else, and getting rid of the last minute addition that has dominated the franchise lore was great. Using a ton of even more likeable characters with even more brutal kills was key to this movies success.

26. Halloween Kills

While definitely a step down from the last movie, I still greatly enjoy this movie. Feeling a little impotent with his relatively low kill counts per movie, Michael goes on an absolutely rampage that I just can't help but love. Sure, the lack of the Strode women hurt this movie, with a few weird side detours, but I still have a ton of fun with this movie.

27. Halloween Ends

The most controversial movie of the new trilogy. Still enjoy it on a second watch. I am finding I don't necessarily need the Shape to be Michael Myers. There is some stuff I would have of liked more of, but after the murder madness of Kills, I am okay with a bit more personal story for the end of JLC's involvement. Going weird was a great choice than just giving use more of the same.

And I am very much going to hell for how much I laugh at that opening scene.

Creature from the Black Lagoon - 7/10

Thin story and characters but just as with The Invisible Man, I could feel the menacing presence of the Creature. Underwater sequences were great, and this very much felt like the precursor to Jaws.

It’s been a fun month. I’m looking forward to next year!

Night 31 and i choose so boringly.
I choose the same movie i watch every 31st, the same movie i had last year in my marathon here.

I was thinking about going with the Batman since the Fandom decided it is a Halloween movie, then i thought about The Long Halloween 1&2, i thought about a ton of movies...but in the end Tradition ruled over Everything.

I just couldnt go a Halloween without the movie.

Trick R Treat

It is just such a Halloween movie and im again convinced that Anthology movies are the perfect way to celebrate Halloween.
Have a few different stories that have a thread that binds them together...perfect.
I just love this movie for Halloween so much and i became a Tradition to watch it on the 31st.

As Usual, had a lot of fun with my Movies but also loved reading your opinions and what you watched this year.
I really like this idea of sharing something like this together, its really nice to see that so many share their love with Halloween and the Genre.

This year i think about doing a 25 days of Christmas Marathon too, so maybe we can all share that too...would be neat.
Anyway, again...Happy Halloween everyone.

Frankenstein (1931)
Mary Shelley's book is my all time favorite piece of literature, and yet my least favorite adaption is my favorite film. This movie is absolutely wonderful. Boris Karloff's performance is absolutely amazing and you can understand why he played so many different monsters at the time. Even without the development of speech, I think the Monster demonstrates a very complex character similar to the book. As with all the Universal Classics, I'm always so impressed with how ahead of the time so much of the filmmaking was.

tumblr_pgnxt6L1mn1s1v3r1o3_540.gifv

The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
The perfect sequel. It's interesting to see the tonal differences between this movie and the original. And again, I really can't believe some of the effect work done in the freaking thirties. Technical limitations, and it doesn't look any worse than a lot of stuff done today. I also appreciate that they added a lot more elements of the original novel surrounding the development of the Monster.

Side note: I really want to know what that Angelina Jolie action remake of this for the Dark Universe would've been.
