Now n4g.

6 EMS Now, a site dedicated to monitoring the global electronic manufacturing industry, posted a piece regarding the news that Hon Hai will begin to manufacture PS3s. The site, admittedly, is boring to read much of the time, but, if you pay close attention to the facts mentioned in their stories, occasionally you'll find little nuggets of information such as the one below:

Insiders in the sector said that Sony has cut the selling price of PS3 consoles, and, at the mean time, planned to launch low-price models, with ASUSTeK Computer Inc. and Hon Hai Precision to supply the models.

The rumor originated when a "reliable source" mentioned Sony's changing up their Playstation offerings for the Holiday Season like so:

* $499.99 for the 80GB Playstation 3, currently $599.99
* $399.99 for the 40GB Playstation 3, currently nonexistent
* Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray included with at least one of the PS3 packages
* $99.99 for the Playstation 2, currently $129.99

$399.99 for a fully functional Blu-ray player and next-gen high def gaming console? Not bad, not bad at all… if true.

Wow the PS2 is gonna sell like crazy.

According to N'Gai Croal:

That said, the day after I made my bet with Andre, I started to get some, ah, rumblings from trusted sources outside of Sony that, if true, strongly suggest that a $399 SKU is on the way. My source tells me that Sony placed a sizable order for 40 gigabyte hard drives. My source also informs me that the profit and loss on hardware has been moved from Sony Computer Entertainment International (SCEI) to the regional groups, SCE America, SCE Europe and SCE Japan. This means that each territory is now free to set its own pricing on PS3 hardware, but those individual territories are responsible for managing the hit to their profitability if they decide to cut the price.

FCC documents show new Sony PS3 model on its way

New Sony PS3 FCC Label (Source: FCC)

With the slow but steady disappearance of the 60GB PlayStation 3 from store shelves, the effective entry-price for Sony’s newest console is once again $599 for the 80GB bundle. It’s unlikely that Sony will head into the holiday season at the same price point as it did last year, which is why industry analysts are predicting an upcoming price drop for the 80GB model.
Even at $499, the PlayStation 3 would still be priced well above its prime competitor – the Xbox 360 Premium at $349. Earlier this month, a report surfaced saying that Sony will introduce yet another PlayStation 3 iteration that could potentially occupy the $399 level.

The $399 model is speculated to come with a 40GB hard drive with no pack-in title. Sony would be expected to carry the 80GB model at $499 with MotorStorm or other title. Furthermore, Sony may sweeten the deal by bundling with either one or both SKUs with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray Disc.

A recent FCC filing by Sony may have revealed several new details about an upcoming PlayStation 3 model. Although the majority of technical details and photographs have been blocked from the public’s view at Sony’s request, the information available is able to confirm that the upcoming model – designated CECHG01 – is indeed a PlayStation 3 at the core.
Technologies described in the filing include Bluetooth, 802.11b/g WiFi, along with a number of I/O ports. The FCC report states that only two USB ports were tested (current PS3s have four ports) and there were no mention of memory card reader tests. Since the FCC is a radio test, it may not have required extensive testing of select PS3 features.

Earlier this month, Sony enlisted the help of top computer manufacturer Foxconn to manufacture low-cost PlayStation 3. The FCC filing could well be the first sign of the new product development agreement between the two companies.

That's what thought. You can't take away all the USB slots. It looks to be the memory card reader slots that will be sacrificed. I used mine only once.
I hope we get a confirmation from Sony soon.

Oh FYI, no backwards compatibility is actually possible. Even though the EE and GS are removed in the new model, there's still a hardware component from the PS2 chip set that is still used in the PS3. I'm not sure what it is, but Beyond3d says as much from people who would know these things. It probably has something to do with the 48gig/s bandwidth. Though honestly, I'm not sure how they would get emulation working very well under 100 percent software emulation the bridge between the Cell and RSX is slower then that in the PS2 (which is still absurdly fast beyond any comparable device by this generations standards).

For the 40gig I'd have Removed: 2-3 of the USB ports, Wi-Fi, possibly the HDMI port, all th memory card reader slots, all BC hardware.

It's also possible that the 399 model will roll out along with the shift to 65nm production...

WHAT!?! I've never even heard of a $300 version? Is that gonna be for Christmas too?

Sony's plan of offering 90 different Playstations in a year and a half is working like a charm.

Since USB ports only cost about 20 cents a piece to manufacture I will have to disagree with you on the notion of having less USB ports. That is gimping just for the sake of being gimped. And also a big no to HDMI being removed, since that idea was already discussed and defeated before the 20GB PS3 launched. The 40GB PS3 should be every bit as functional as the 80GB PS3, just with a few less bells and whistles like Wifi and Memorystick slots.

We hope anyways. If its that cheap then I can't see them taking it out. It would just be another mistake, and they are running low on their chances to come back.

Sony's $399 PS3 confirmed by Best Buy?

Thanks to a helpful tipster, we have a couple of Best Buy documents showing a $399 Playstation 3 with 40GB disk and Spiderman 3 (yes, Blu-ray) bundle with an "In Stock Date" of October 28. However, the more important "Street Date" field is unfortunately empty at the moment. While the docs look legit and don't seem to be Photoshopped, they can still be faked easily enough. So we did a quick lookup on the UPC code and sure enough, while the details are masked, the manufacturer is listed as "Sony Computer Entertainment of America." Unfortunately, we don't see the new model CECHG01 listed anywhere in the docs. As such, let's be clear: this ain't official. Still, we'll be paying close attention on October 12th as will you we suspect.

please show a 40 gig version sony, damn it i wants

that would push sales on sonys part, they should really look into it, if this rumor isnt true.

spider man 3 wasn't as good as the first two, but it is a very popular movie, and spider man 3 on blu ray alone could definitely sell consoles regardless.

i love my ps3 and dont regret getting one at all, currently waiting to buy skate, assassins creed, unchartered and ratchet and clank.

my birthday is in 30 days, hollywood video is closing near my house, 10 bucks for dvds, about 20 for blu ray movies, and 25 for ps3 games.

they only have sonic but for 25 Im sold.

Shouldn't games sell consoles?

yea games sell consoles, but in this situation if people wanna see spiderman 3 in high deff, are they going to buy a 800- 1,000 dollar blu ray player, or a 400 dollar game console as well as a blu ray player.

i have the PSP KH spin off as a thread now check it out, its called Birth by Sleep.

Well, it's more like 450-1000+ for a stand alone. But that does bring up an interesting point. With a PS3 at $400, they are basically undercutting the other CE companies producing stand alones. Gotta suck for those companies.

But either way, the PS3 needs games to sell consoles if it wants to compete with the other systems.
