Yes, but you're talking about character motivation, NOT a specific, detailed happening in the comics. Bane breaking Batman's back is a specific thing; specific to that comic story for a reason. In the comic, the reason Batman's back is broken is because Batman has to find a replacement, because he's essentially paralyzed; that's what happens in that story. It would make no sense for Batman's back to be broken in TDKR because the fight begins and ends with Batman. There will be no replacement for Batman in TDKR; he will finish the fight. And also, this story picks up 8 years after TDK. Why in the heck would BAtman come back after 8 years only to have his back broken? Would he sit out another 8 years? LOL! The back breaking makes no sense within the context of TDKR.

I dont think its implied that Batman took 8 years off, its just 8 years in the future

IMO if batmans back doesnt get broken, something will happen to him physically to give him a reason hang up the cape for a period of time

His back is broken so he can Rise. It ain't rocket science. And the film takes place eight years after the previous. His back can broken after that. The film can take place for a period of another five years.

I agree that both of those points are reasons enough to be suspicious about that synopsis of the prologue. However, the things in its favor are:

1. It let's the audience to know what kind of character Bane is before we know who he is. Right away we know the guy is intelligent, a patient and meticulous strategist, a skilled and vicious fighter--all without specifically telling us who he is, where he came from, why he's doing this, and--more importantly--how the hell he knows Bruce Wayne is Batman. And him utterly beating the crap out of Batman--Batman, of all people--right from the start shows this is a guy who is a genuine and dangerous threat right from the start.

2. It provides a possible reason for why there's an eight year gap in-between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises and what happened to Batman in-between that time: he got injured so badly he was forced to recuperate which, realistically, would take a very long time and, because of that beat down, makes him unsure if he can ever come back as Batman even after he recovers, thus setting up the challenge he'll have to face for the rest of the film. Not to mention by having Batman disappear for several years and then come back, it creates a deliberate echo to the first film in which Bruce disappeared for years.

3. It's a shocking way to open the movie. I mean, you have the hero beaten right at the beginning of the film. And then, if that wasn't enough, the hero is Batman--the guy who is supposed to be the ultimate badass. And we then cut to eight years later? That's a hell of a way to open the film and hook the audience, don't you think?

I agree entirerly with all these well-thought observations you've displayed here.

I know some people here dislike it because it seems too soon, but I actually love the concept of the prologue here and how it introduces Bane ala Knightfall by shockingly and immediately distilling the audience with how physically menacing and dangerous Bane will be by simply putting Batman out of commission without wasting anytime. No buildup, no psychological mindgames, no foreshadowing, he just does the deed and becomes a frightening barrier for Batman to face later on after he recovers.

My issues come with it's legitimacy, rather than what it is conceptually. Conceptually I think it would make for an incredible introduction, moreso than anything else that has been suggested. I actually expect a part of me will be disappointed if it's not something like this really.

The kidnapping of Gordon's kid was right out of year one. The only difference was who was kidnapping him.
The bats swarming to the sonic to give him cover was right out of year one.

Bruce botching his first outing w/o the suit was in year one.

Plus the whole idea of Bruce being afraid of bats and traveling around the world to be trained was taken from The Man Who Falls I believe.

True, but in the exact same EMPIRE article, Nolan says it takes place 8 years after TDK and Bruce Wayne is not in a great state.

He's not in a great state mentally and emotionally because he can't let go of his pain and his grief. He's stuck to where he was at the end of TDK.

That's being entirely picky. Joker shooting Barbara and molesting her, only to display it in front of an abused Gordon, is right along the same lines of manipulating events so Rachel dies and pushes Harvey over the edge. Both involve a series of calculated events to prove a point that all it takes to go insane is one very traumatic incident.

But hey, if you don't like that example, there's always the SWAT vs Batman sequence. Batman is trapped and triggers a switch on his heel that attracts a whole salon of bats to distract and fend off the SWAT and police forces -- allowing him to escape. Ripped directly out of the book.

Apparently he has good credentials, but I'd like to know the full extent here, as he has made some outrageously revealing claims on the story, and if he's legit I'm wondering why the majority of us have stepped aside these MAJOR SPOILERS he's claimed recently such as:

Thanks dude! When I was still living in Philly I went there to see TDK 2 or 3 times. I have to admit, I got a little queasy when I saw Inception there. It just felt overwhelming at times.

I really hope they are showing the prologue there.

I really preferred seeing TDK at the King of Prussia IMAX. I'm not crazy about the dome shape at the Tuttleman when it's used for feature films. Unfortunately, the KOP changed to digital so the Tuttleman is the only local alternative.

I trust him since most of you guys trust him. But I still think it's possible that his source was misinformed. I think he even said himself that misinformation is definitely possible.

i don't recall if he specified [BLACKOUT]to whom[/BLACKOUT]. Just that it will be [BLACKOUT]passed on[/BLACKOUT]. [BLACKOUT]Blake[/BLACKOUT] is the logical conclusion though. I mean [BLACKOUT]who else can it be? Catwoman?[/BLACKOUT] Maybe someone remembers? I'm still not fully convinced of all of that though. I do like it very much though when he said that Bruce is easily the best written character in the script this time (followed by Selina). That makes me so happy.

Well Bosef also said that [BLACKOUT]after faking his death, he settles down with Selina. This implies to me it doesn't go down to Catwoman, and the only other people in the story I could think of that are young enough would be Gordon's children or Blake. So yeah, that's pretty much the only conclusion, unless he passed it on to a character older than himself which is unlikely.[/BLACKOUT]
