News On The Dark Knight Rises
Tom Hardy on Bane, and Nolan speaks!

You've seen the new Empire covers with Batman and Bane, but here's a sneak peek at some of the news on The Dark Knight Rises inside the magazine. Specifically, Nolan himself gives away a few tidbits on the film's plot and setting, and Tom Hardy talks about Bane.

Let's hear from director Christopher Nolan first, and see what he'll divulge about the film. "It's really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after The Dark Knight. So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state.

"With Bane, we're looking to give Batman a challenge he hasn't had before. With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we're testing Batman both physically as well as mentally."

Speaking of physical challenges, what can Tom Hardy tell us about Bane? "He's brutal. Brutal. He's a big dude who's incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It's not about fighting. It's about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it's nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action."

Costume designer Lindy Hemming also lets drop a few clues to his backstory as she talks about Bane's look. On the mask, she says, "He was injured early in his story. He's suffering from pain and needs gas to survive. He can't survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at his back, where there are two cannisters."

For much, much more from all these people - as well as Christian Bale - pick up the new issue of Empire when it hits newsstands on Thursday. The Dark Knight Rises is out in cinemas on July 20, 2012.

The Han dynasty is no more. Three Kingdoms: the Shu-Han, Wu, and Wei competes for hegemony!

I know what you mean... I'm leaving the theater as soon as the prologue finishes. I can't stand Tom Cruise.
If you're buying a ticket to MI4 for the TDKR prologue, your money is still going to Tom Cruise in some form. :cwink:

As far as the prologue itself goes, I think it will be Bane's intro and nothing more. (A la the bank heist to introduce Joker.)

You can always walk out after the prologue and ask for your money back. Theaters will give you your money back unless you watch over half the movie.

It would be a dick move, but you could get away with it. Only watched 6 minutes? They'd have to give you your money back.

I don't see why people would just leave after the prologue. Everyone seems to be movie buffs on here, why wouldn't you want to experience a movie just for the sake of experiencing it?

Sure, the incentive here for us is TDKR but Mission Impossible 4 could be great and you could be missing out. What if you see it and you really like it? Even if it isn't good, from what little I've seen of the film it should have some great action sequences.

TDKR prologue, IMAX, and Mission Impossible action scenes seems like a win, win, win to me. Make it a night out on the town at your local IMAX theater.

Hell, I saw Pirates 4 just to get laid.
There's no doubt I'm staying for M:I-4. :o

I highly doubt the prologue has anything to do with Batman since it involves Bane. This is the first six minutes of the film, no way would they start Batman fighting Bane without establishing Bane first.

My guess is that it involves Bane coming into Gotham (wasn't there a dock sequence mentioned), Bane's life before coming into Gotham or any of the things that they filmed early on like the india shoot, plane sequence etc.

They're not going to just jump into Batman and Bane fighting in a six to a seven minute scene. That would be like Joker during the Bank Heist and Batman just dropping in, confronting him. This is going to be used to set up the character of Bane, not Batman vs. Bane.

a lot can happen in 6 minutes..

I'm excited with MI4. I mean it's Brad Bird.

And [blackout]Josh Holloway[/blackout]

It's really is funny how mI4 is being undermined because I was going to see it in IMAX anyway for the scenes in dubai with the IMAX camera alone.. and I've enjoyed all 3 of the mI films... but yeah.. TDKR prologue being attached just got my ass on it midnight showing instead of just maybe opening weekend.

There's my answer. Thanks, Goku. :)

Normally, I'd never do that, but I have absolutely zero desire to see MI4. It's bad enough I have to drive to Detroit to see the prologue....

Careful with that because the theater I went to see the prologue specifically said no refunds after The Dark Knight prologue

Alright, well... I guess I'll stay then. :( Don't want to get into an argument in Detroit over $13.

At least MI4 is shot in IMAX (partly).

MI4 is directed by Brad Bird.

There are probably much worse movies you have sat through.

Yeah, well, The Incredibles is light years ahead of 90% of comic book movies, so I'm more than willing to give that guy a chance.

I'm not jumping out of my skin to see MI4 in the same way as TDKR. But I'd still like to see it. It's looks quite fun to me. I like a decent action/spy fix every now and then.

Brad Bird's "cartoons" contain better storytelling than 95% of Hollywood's live-action output, imo.

I find BeanGrinder's disdain for "cartoons" is disturbing...

But yeah, M:I:GP looks fun to me. I'm fond of the M:I series, and I was planning on seeing this one anyways, so the TDKR attachment makes it that much more exciting.

I love the amount of loathing for movies one finds on a predominantly-movie-centric board.

So did any of ya'll see the rumored prologue script going around? thoughts? i read it and i think if true, would be awesome.

haha... probably not. but until i see footage, anything is game.

Brad Bird has worked on cartoons. That's it. I don't have high hopes for MI4. Especially, with all the hip-hop influence in the marketing materials. Looks like the studio just needed to higher a director and thought, "Who can we get for this? How about that cartoon guy? He'll work for free." Nothing about this movie has impressed me so far.

While his live action debut might be in question, you're being really dismissive of Bird's "cartoons" which - like what many have said - are well made films in their own right.

some news sites today said that the prologue is 21 december. isnt it on december 16?

I can't believe people are actually complaining about seeing a Mission: Impossible movie co-starring Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg and directed by Brad Bird. I mean, c'mon people. It's not like you're being subjected to The Human Centipede or something.

21 December came from Empire Magazine and is correct for the UK, as it's a UK magazine. It's still the 16th for America.

It's just lazy news sites doing a bit of copy and paste journalism.
