61 Nights of Halloween (2025 Edition)

Tonight...

A lack of conscience.

The First Omen was operating on Excorist III/Rosemary's Baby levels of "elevated horror," meanwhile Immaculate was more or less in line with The Devil’s Rain or Prey for the Devil.

I dug both but First Omen was fantastic.
People seem to like it mainly for the homage to Possession. :o

8th of September:
A Haunting in Venice (2023)
The Ugly Stepsister (2025)

Kenneth Branagh's third Hercule Poirot outing is a tasty morsel of seasonal goodness. The cinematography is gorgeous and appropriately atmospheric, with heavy emphasis on Dutch angles. The locations, the gothic production design, the costumes — the word is SUMPTUOUS.

Body horror is having a moment right now, and The Ugly Stepsister rides the wave in a grand splash of grotesque beauty. Lea Myren is glorious as the lead, Elvira, one of Cinderella's stepsisters. Her acting prowess paired with some really effective prosthetic makeup makes an impression, whether it's horrifyingly gory or unnoticeably subtle.

The Ugly Stepsister is thematically rich, especially when it comes to tackling concepts like beauty standards, pretty privilege, and jealousy. It isn't precious or coy about any of it, and that makes the film feel layered and refreshing.

Like these both very much.

Remember when Apple and the pedophile from Jeepers Creepers tried to make Justin Long a movie star?
