19th of September:
X (2022)
Pearl (2022)

X-2022-Movie-poster.jpg

Suspense, showstopping kills, and snappy pacing — X delivers everything I want out of a proper slasher, but its real x-factor is the erudite screenplay. Themes like aging, sexuality, and jealousy are brilliantly covered through the most important factor of all: empathy. Mia Goth is a ****ing star.

Mia Goth is a supernova in Pearl — terrifying beyond belief yet thoroughly human. She's accompanied by an affecting, thematically rich screenplay, an excellent supporting cast (including Superman himself, David Corenswet), and Eliot Rockett's deliciously saturated cinematography. Pearl is Ti West's masterpiece. Who hasn't felt like Pearl at some point? Human, terrifying, indelible.

This wasn't very good and as a fan of Kyle Gallner's recent work it's easily the worst thing I've seen him in but for some reason I was still entertained by this for the most part. Shawn Ashmore is pretty much playing a villain from a lifetime movie and it's kind of hilarious to watch at times but I still don't get why we were supposed to like Gallner's either since he's kind of a violent, creepy, stalkerish dude too but I guess that's more of an issue with the bad/lazy writing than anything else.

5.5/10

I liked it enough for what it was but we've definitely seen too many of these kinds of supernatural/demonic films lately. The main guy gave a good performance though and I was surprised by how dark and even somewhat emotional it got at times.

6/10

John Kramer would be proud of how much effort the villains put into their convoluted plan.

Going to watch Him tonight since I'm still not finished reading The Long Walk.

Forgot how white the first movie is. Brandi being in the OG group would have been interesting. I blame Scary Movie, though. :o
