80's Sci Fi/Action Movies Appreciation Thread

Actually there was a story my best friend and I were working on for the possibility of an Alien 5...

The film, which we dubbed "Alien Planet" would focus on Ripley and Call from "Resurrection" finally journeying to the homeworld of the Xenomorphs, discovering that the creatures, while entirely organic, were actually instruments of biological warfare created by the space jockeys.

We'd also discover an alternate plane of time that surrounds the planet (we haven't flushed out the story yet to account for this, but with enough thought we'd make it work to help our ending)

The film would end with Ripley flying the Space Jokcey derelict off of the Alien Planet, sending a distress signal warning other ships to stay away while she crashes the ship...

...into LV-426...

The film would end with the Nostromo recieving the signal, and thus setting up a circular storyline, and give closure to Ripley's character.

Very "12 monkeys"-ish, include a extremely brutal death for Cail and you might have me sold. (although I would obviously rather it retconned Resurrection.... I think you're idea is the next BEST thing)

Resurrection aside, the most tragic thing to happen to this series was Fox shelving Riddley Scott and James Cameron proposed Alien 5 collaboration in favor of AvP

The first two are amazing. I refuse to watch the rest though in fear of tainting my love for the first two.

As a film student enrolled at the Art Institute I look at it this way...

As a fan, T2 is my favorite.

As a filmmaker, the 1984 original is my favorite. It's so shoe string and guerrilla in terms of production; watching the "Other Voices" documentary was such a treat. Especially Cameron's "Big Mac Coupon" story ;)

I understand completely on those two aspects.

I haven't seen this documentary however, Although i would love too.

Second one was INCREDIBLE....Like I mean :wow:

First one was REALLY GOOD...

Third one....well....Meh, forgettable...

i don't know why Predator 2 has a bad reputation. i thought it was a great follow up to Predator 1 and i was convinced (or at least hoping) that they were going to make another one after watching Predator 2 for the first time. i loved the new Predator design and the ending was one of my favorite scenes in ANY movie.

exactly! that was one of my biggest gripes. on the AvP commentary, Anderson was bragging about how he was able to pull AvP off with less money than was spent on Alien 3 and i say that it shows. everything in AvP was half-assed, ESPECIALLY the predators. the predators in AvP were a joke. i made some comparison pix for those who don't recall.

on the left are predators from 'predator 2' and on the right are predators from 'avp'.

mouths closed - notice how the mandables on the avp predator don't fold properly

surprised look - aw, the avp pred looks so cute

elder predator - avp one looks like $#!+

predator build - avp one looks like he's on roids, yet he's supposed to be a TEEN predator

so far, everything i've seen about the predator from AVP2 seems to hold true to the predator movies and i'm lovin' it. hopefully, he'll be more like the predators from 1 and 2 and not like the avp predators.

Colin and Greg definitely got the Predator look down and they have a great visual style. I hope they get the gig directing Predator 3, and I hope they get a solid 15 million budget increase from AVP:R. I would love to see Wolf "clean up" another mess (Perhaps in a prequel of sorts to AVP:R).

And even more so the T2: Extended Edition!

That cut of the film is a Terminator fan's dream

Including Kyle Reese back in, that cut of T2 now has EVERY aspect of the Terminator mythos covered and touched upon.

Yeah, it has a great scene involving the CPU of The Terminator.

Anybody ever listened to the commentary on the T2: Extended Edition?

Its quite humorous, James Cameron kinda takes it over having William Wisher to just kinda agree with him the whole time.

Youtube vids...

Here you go my friend:

One of the most memorable scenes from Alien (chest burster):

Another excellent scene (Brett's attack):

I love Jim but yeah...he's kind of a dick on the commentary.

One specific instance is when Arnold walks out of the bar to "Bad to the Bone."

Bill's about to say something really insightful, and Jim just completely shuts him down going on about his decision to use the song despite it being used in other films at the time.

Bill never gets to tell the little tid bit he was about to, and I do recall it being something important I wanted to hear.

Robocop, in my estimation, is one of the best put together films ever. Everything fits, not a single moment is out of place or unecessary.

You hate the characters you need to hate and you care for the characters you need to care for.

Great effects (dated to a degree but still hold up)
Great cast
Great costume (who doesn't love the Robo-Suit? It's PERFECT)
Great score (the late great Basil Poledouris)

Great film

Yeah, i remember that moment and a few others where Cameron just blows Wisher away before he can get a word in.

Then again i guess Cameron's thought process was miles ahead of Wisher as far as commentary on DVD's is concerned. It's a shame too, like you said.. he seemed to have some really insightful things to say about the film, hell he co-wrote both films. So it would been interesting to get a little more out of him. Ohh well.

Great films all around.

I picked up the 2-Disc Special Edition today.

I feel i got my money's worth.

I just took the embedding and put it in...but that never seems to work for me...am I doing something wrong?

CFE

edit...still not working. I'll find out in the tech forum
