Tonight's episode: I really enjoyed it. I thought there were a couple moments of weak dialog (hullooo, welcome to SV), but overall, I was intrigued by most of the groundwork they seemed to be laying.
Chloe - No surprises here for me. Her notions of self-importance still drive her character, from her relationships to her developing role as Watchtower. Granted, I've never been a fan, and tonight's episode made me less of one. However, I will say that I didn't find it odd at all that she'd ask Clark to bring Jimmy back. That made sense to me, as did Clark's response. It would have scored huge Chloe points for me if she'd reluctantly and sadly accepted Clark's judgment and decision in the matter and given him at least a little acknowledgment for making the right and most difficult decision (based on experience). But nooo... better to ***** at the guy -the one you supposedly know better than anyone else. And really, are we going to have to see JealousSadface on Chloe every time she realizes that Clark has feelings for Lois this season?
Emil! What a wonderful spark he adds to the show. He's "in the know" with all the superhero activity, and he's brilliant enough to actually show Chloe a thing or two. LOVE HIM. Really good actor too, with a great presence. I think we need to keep him. Can he be the new Watchtower? *hiding from the Chloe fans*
Oh, Ollie.... I welcome your sweaty pecs back with open arms. I love when you hit bottom because I can only embrace you on this show when we very clearly are shown how your heroic nature contrasts with Clark's. And I have to say it.... I find Justin and Erica's chemistry to be off the charts charming. Okay, I know they aren't meant to be on this show... that's cool... but in another universe, on another show, they are a dynamite on-screen pairing.
Callum Blue as Zod - Wow. I think he sizzles in his portrayal, but I'm not sure about this whole storyline. Not only is is confusing (so far), but the whole Army of Zod thing leaves me a little bored and waiting for the next scene. Hopefully they will develop this into a more interesting storyline.
Tess - ILU, but I worry that you're entire storyline is going to wrapped around Zod and the time-traveling wtf? Army stuff. I want to see you back at the D.P. once in a while bossing people around and making Clark nervous.
Saving the best for last....CLARK! As often happens, Tom's presence and beauty leave me struggling for words. How is it possible for him to look even better than he has before? I thought the black Kryptonian-esque ensemble worked much better on screen than it did in pictures. I groaned a few times at Clark's verbalizing his blaming of himself for things again (like the death of a certain guy who was actually killed by his wife's new boyfriend), but I also understand that it's the nature of Clark to feel responsibility for the events around him because of his greater abilities. Finally! A decent kick-ass fight for Clark. I loved the fight choreography, particularly that crouching stance we saw Clark take.
Double points for bringing up the question of his inability to fly to Jor-El. The answer Jor-El gave was totally predictable, but it was good to have that finally stated. I really like the idea that Clark has a strong tie to humanity that is supposedly holding him back. I don't believe it actually IS the thing holding him back, rather it's his being able to finally accept and embrace both his Kryptonian and Human sides that will finally culminate in him taking that final step towards flying - a metaphor for his total acceptance for who he is and his role in this world. Lois representing that human tie right now makes perfect sense to me. He needs his human tie, because it is an integral part of who he is.
His ties to Lois being used as a reason holding him back from his training can be seen as kind of a stretch in light of what we actually saw last season, but it's a do-able stretch for me. I don't have a problem with the notion that Clark has strong feelings for Lois that are surfacing in a way that is no longer deniable. Of course, I tend to go with the reinforcement of my girl Lana's initial impression way back when she first met Lois - "The best one's start out that way." Lana, someone who I believe actually DOES know Clark Kent on a level that no one else does, saw and felt the attraction way back when, and we all know she was right. The potential for a Clark and Lois magnetic-type of love has always been there. While we may not have seen much in the way of on-screen consummation from Clark's perspective (we did see Lois acknowledge her "love" for him), we have been shown Clark's feelings in many smaller, but no less significant ways: The Blur phone calls that he relishes even more than she does; the ribbing he gives to her and puts up with from her; his professional respect for her; the way we've seen him look at her...etc.
I don't know... if I, a Clana fan, can see it and acknowledge that it makes sense, why do people still scream Anvil! when it comes to Clark and Lois' emerging love for each other? Oh yeah... because too many in this fandom see what they want to see as opposed to what's actually playing out on the screen.
I'm sure I do that too, btw. But hopefully, not to a completely ridiculous extent.
