I’m so immersed in the X verse right now with everything going on that I was considering passing on this title. Just wasn’t interested in jumping into another big event.

Glad I decided to pick it up though. What a damn good read. Now this is how you do a Carnage/Venom/Spider-Man story. You keep it dark, bloody, nasty and then you throw in that classic Spider-Man humor. All those elements just worked so well. Literally felt like I was trapped in a horror movie as I’m reading this. The writing of the characters was so spot on and the interactions between Venom and Spider-Man were on point. Chapter 3 had chills running up my spine the entire time.

It’s a shame that this might get passed over by some. Just feels like poor timing to bring this out because the X event is on absolute fire right now. All in all this was a fantastic intense read and I’m so really hyped for the rest

I was thinking of picking this up because of all the good wom. I'm not a fan of the symbiotes though. Especially Carnage. Knowing this would you still recommend it?

Hmmm Not sure.

I’m not a fan of symbiotes either because that world has just become way too convoluted. The market just became so over saturated with them and it got sickening. That being said I’m a huge fan of Venom and Carnage. Even if you’re not though, Spiderman is pretty important in this story as well and plays a major role so buy it for that. Trust me, it’s a dark horror movie style thriller with Carnage pretty much stalking Venom and Spider-Man. It’s really good and a complete change of pace from anything else going on in the Spider Verse.

The dynamic between Spider-Man and Venom is done so well and Spideys humor is on point and oddly fits so well into a bloody story like this for some reason.

And Stegman is on pencils too, I believe.

I may pick this up. If the characters are well written and the story is as well, I can be 'into' the symbiotes, i.e. Spectacular Spider-Man.

Yep it’s Stegman doing the pencils. Granted because he has such a specialized style, I don’t think it could fit on some titles. However for this particular story, he perfectly captures the mood and atmosphere of the story. Literally he was born to handle this type of story.

I know there are Spiderman fans that don’t particularly care for this darker take on the stories but I seriously feel like they would be missing out on this one.

I picked it up. I can't stand Carnage. As a book, it's amazing. As someone who has read some really CRAPPY Venom books over the last 30 years, this (And Cates/Stegman's entire Venom run) are a breath of fresh air.

Also, the art in this ALONE is worth the price of admission. If you like the old McFarlane era artwork when it was about detail and crazy renderings, you will just have to change your pants when your done. Sorry...Stegman's art is that good. He's my fave Spidey artist working today. He worked on Superior's first few issues, then Renew Your Vows (ongoing), and his work on Venom has been consistently great. He took 6 months to work on this issue, and it shows.

This issue is good enough that it has been echoing in my brain for a few days. like ragingdemon said, it is a true horror book, but Spidey is classic Spidey. Also, you will probably learn to like Eddie throughout the course of this book.

I haven’t followed Venoms solo title. I read the first Tpb and enjoyed it but after that didn’t pick up anything. I do enjoy this new take on Eddie and his relationship with the symbiote. Seems like they gathered some inspiration from the movie in terms of how they communicate with one another.

Also I agree..... this take on Eddie is more likable as a character then his past interactions. The new take on the relationship between Spider-Man and Venom works. As someone who’s followed and loved their dynamic through out their history I believe the characters have just evolved pass the point of sworn enemies.

I have only have 2 fears for this title moving forward....

1). Spider-Man and Venom parting ways at some point and leaving the title.

2) It turns into a modern day Maximum Carnage with a ton of other heroes showing up. Would
Love for them to keep it personal between Venom Spider-Man and Carnage in the main book

Picked this up last night. Hopefully I'll get to reading today.
Don't forget to check the inner back page ad. There are 20 issues with the ad replaced with an original Mark Bagley sketch. Willy Wonka style.

Is there a proper reading order?
The back of issue 1 says #2 is next but scream and another issue came out. ?__?

Also, why is Peter being written like an idiot again?

I honestly thought Pete stole the show in this issue. Didn’t have any issue at all with how he was written. If anything my only complaint was that there should have been more Spidey in it. To each his own but I really didn’t seen any problem with his characterization. Honestly it’s a bit weird to have a series with this tone and the character of Spider-Man work so well but it does in this case.

Man I can’t even imagine trying to find a proper reading order for this title cause it seems like it’s going to be all over the place. I really don’t think there is an exact order. Then again other then the main series and ASM I’m passing on everything else.

Seconded. Peter is in a situation where he has ZERO knowledge about everything, and he's having to adapt on the fly...also, he's maintaining his sense of humor while not coming across like...well...Deadpool. I thought it was well done.

Read issue 2 of this. Wow...seeing a Venom and Spider-Man written in character reminds me of the olden days. Also, Ryan Stegman's Spidey and Venom are just awesome. Whatever they're paying him, it's not enough.

I still need to read the first issue. I have it so I'm not sure what my excuse is at this point.

The second issue was great. Not quite as good as the first though. Felt like it was missing that horror movie style atmosphere that the first issue had. Also I’m a bit irked that it seems like Venom and Spidey have already parted ways. Whatever the case, gates writes one hell of Eddie Brock/Venom. Still can’t believe how much depth and likability he’s added to this character.

Yeah, he's actually added to Eddie's backstory, as opposed to just making more symbiotes. The thing about Eddie's kid, him accidentally killing a kid in high school, and the symbiote blocking things from his mind to protect him emotionally...it's all a winning formula. It also makes the symbiote a LOT more easy to relate to, as opposed to a bloodthirsty, no-voice parasite that hates Spider-Man.

Read this after the epic letdown from Abrams and thank god I did. Got me back in a good mood. This is seriously a fantastic intense action heavy series with some well written characters. The fact that people have just become exhausted with symbiote and all the craziness going on in the X world is going to hurt this series but man it’s good.

So many nice little character moments....
Loved Eddie pretty much saying he prefers Spider-Man feeling guilty about all this and admitting he needs him. Spider-Man in typical bad ass heroic fashion willing to hold off Carnage and company just so Eddie can get his son. These two have really come a long way. I could have done without the Hulk but whatever. Not gonna nit pick on this

Yes granted this series is essentially just a well written version of Maximum Carnage....but man it’s fun lol.

Issue 3 was awesome. This has been the best Marvel event I've read in a long time. Eddie and the symbiote having such opposite goals for their children is just poetry. I fully expect to see an ending where we see the symbiote and Eddie having to kill Eddie's son and Carnage simultaneously, resulting in a rift between Eddie and Venom again...but that would make for a stellar ending. I would miss Eddie playing the guardian devil of his son, though!

So sad that the next issue is the last. Gates needs to seriously write a Spiderman on going someday. Hell just do a Spiderman/Venom ongoing in the same vein as The Batman/Superman series . Gates just has added so many layers to the Dynamic between the two and it’s just a shame that it’s coming to an end.

Ive been a longtime fan of the Spiderman Venom rivalry over the years. I’ve always loved it. Watching Eddie look at Peter and basically in his own way apologize for everything and tell Peter
“You’re all I have, please” and then ask him to protect his son. Wow..... Then watching Peter tell Eddie that as long as he’s standing no one will harm his son. Powerful stuff. Granted it was only a panel or two, but that is such a great moment between them especially for anyone’s who’s followed what these two have been through since the birth of Venom. How things have changed......

Yup. Venom has become an actual character over the course of the new Venom series. Did they tweak the symbiote origins? Sure...has it benefited the series to add some layers? ABSOLUTELY. And yeah, after everything Eddie and Peter have been through, it's nice to see that mutual respect. I remember that being one of the highlights of Dan Slott's Amazing 800. Seeing Eddie loan Peter the symbiote was a big moment...too bad it wasn't made more relevant to the story because we had to skip to "FIGHT RED GOBLIN", but still...

I'm feeling kind of indifferent to this book
It just hasn't wowed me. I do like that Scream is back. The cover art of her upcoming series is gorgeous. Sadly that means the interior art will be mediocre.
