Accuracy in Costumes

Here's the thing, I've never been on the "if it's comic accurate, then it's automatically good." For a few reasons:

1. Some comic designs are just BAD!
2. Comics and film are different medium, so what works for one doesn't automatically work for the other.

Even Marvel, who gets so much praise for their "accuracy" most of the time, still makes modifications. Most of their characters have outfits that homage their "classic" look, but they're not 100% faithful. Sometimes you can do that (Deadpool and Jubilee look great), but not always.

The Psylocke costume, is very fanservicey. It's hard to argue that it isn't, and always has been. It's primarily about sex appeal. She's fighting in a freaking THONG. That must be horribly uncomfortable/impractical for a ninja who does a lot of hand to hand combat (riding up your butt-crack/lady-bits in the heat of battle, ouch). And when you hear Munn describe what they have to do just to fit her into the damn thing, and that she broke the crotch section at one point trying to do an action scene, it just makes it seem even worse. As does posing her next to Magneto and Apocalypse because it shows the ridiculously blatant double-standard when it comes to male vs. female costumes (and this has been a long-standing issue with superhero comics).

I don't really get why people dislike Apocalypse's costume itself. I actually think it's one of those cases where the movie improves on the comic book. In the comics, there's no reason for Apocalypse to wear what he wears, other than because it looks alien. The movie version looks like an old/ancient pharaoh but with a heavy techno twist. It actually says more about the character than the comic book design does.

The idea behind the movie costume for Apocalypse is good, the execution is far from it imo. I hope it's a case of that it looks better on screen than in still photos, but judging from the people that have seen the trailer it seems unlikely.

Given that it was a trailer that was put together exclusively for SDCC (after only like 5 weeks of shooting), without a lot of the effects/post-production stuff added in (apparently they're going to be redoing Oscar Isaac's voice for example), I'm not all that concerned right now.

Fox, in particular, is really bad at doing this with their female characters. Sue Storm, Moira, Emma Frost, Psylocke, Mystique, the list goes on.

I think that's the case as well.

Again, when I argued for not liking the costume I mentioned that I did not want him to exactly look like how he does in the comics. An excellent case has been made by many over here that the look pays homage to his roots more than the comic iteration. My specific gripe is that in pursuit of that look they have taken the character too far away from what makes him identifiable. I would have preferred something a little more subtle.

The thing about the Apocalypse look is the face. In the post credit for DOFP he has the pale gray skin and the blue lips, now it looks like they completely did away with it unless that's just the lighting of the photos.

That's a good point Pyro, I didn't think of that. Maybe it has to do with the changes he is supposed to take on through the film?

I'm really curious to see what Elektra's costume on the show will look like. Will they try and do the "ninja butt-flap," or will they go with something that homages it, but looks less ridiculous? We shall see.

The lighting and shadow in the post credit scene make it impossible to really see what colour he is.

Even if they did change it, who cares? So what?

Apocalypse is a 3000 year old dude empowered by various technologies. You'd think he'd change his look now and then.

Some of the costumes in comic are just bad or hard to adapt into live action. I think the best way to do it is to keep the personality and spirit of the character in the costume and make it identifiable. All the great costumes we saw in the movie are not a complete replicate of the comic version but always a modification or update on the comic version itself.

Blade looked nothing like his comic counterpart and he has one of the most badass costumes in cbm history. It is all about the spirit of the character, not the accuracy.

It has to fit the medium. Villains like Electro (his original green/yellow outfit) or Mysterio looks great in comic book format and they really stick out and fit that medium, but put them on screen in the same outfit and it looks like a Batman and Robin take on Spider-Man.

I get the whole Egyptian Roots thing and I don't mind that being the basic idea of where they wanted the costume to go, but the problem I have with this particular costume is that it looks like it's designed to be sleek and flowy and smooth like a martial artist. Those tubes running from low in the front to high in the back suggest a sort of a snake like feeling. There are plenty of characters that would do well with this sort of look. But Apocalypse is supposed to look imposing, strong, like he could crush you with his pinky.

I'm sure I'll get used to the whole egyptian armor idea and the bare face fairly easily once I see the character in motion, but I really wish they'd put more focus on his strength and stature (even if it is a regular human, there are plenty of ways to emphasize that kind of feature) and make that armor a little less flowy and move those neck tubes somewhere else so they don't dominate his entire face.

Movie Blade is literally nothing like the original comic Blade, in look and personality. It was a complete revamp that then took off in the comics. It's one thing you can praise David Goyer for.

As for costumes... i think the new Batman costume and the Deadpool costume are the best ever adaptations.

Apocalypse? I don't mind the design. He looks like a techno Pharaoh, which is appropriate. But... the colour is a bit too goofy i think. Too purple. I think a more muted blue, especially for his face, would have been much better. But remember, Isaac said they are using mo-cap/CGI to enhance the suit and his face. Plus i think he'll have a few different looks in the movie. He's trying to appear more human and approachable whilst he is recruiting followers... it wouldn't surprise me if he transforms or whatever.

And let's be honest, a 100% comic accurate Apocalypse would look stupid in live action, with the big A belt buckle etc. He comes from the 90s, an era of gross over complication of costume designs just for the sake of it. Pointless pouches and tubes and straps were the in thing. Well that **** ain't gonna fly today.
