Meh. I dissagree.

If Rachel McAdams had been cast, the amount of complaints would have been drastically reduced, trust me.

Many of us always felt that Jessica was thrown in there for sheer sex appeal and nothing else. The media had us focused on several other hopefuls during the casting process, but no one mentioned Jessica Alba's name until the day before she was cast for the role. The backlash was terrible. Why? Because Jessica's never been noted for her acting ability.

To counteract the uproar, everyone on that production stressed that she was "so maternal", but all we saw was her nagging Johnny non-stop. There wasn't one ounce of motherly compassion shown...just whining. But cosmetics aside, if the writing, acting and directing of the character had been stronger, people would have shut up a la Brandon Routh or Tobey Maguire.

Instead, Jessica Alba basically did exactly what most people expected her to: window dress for 105 minutes. :whatever: I don't blame the actress entirely though. There are other factors to consider.

If McAdams had been chosen she would have gotten her own hate brigade, now as much as alba ? perhaps not but we would have gotten the "to young" or "Look at that forehead" types just like Bosworth got for SR or the sort of heat Dunst gets as MJ

I think I could buy Jessica as a "fledgling" scientist but certainly not someone on par with Reed or Victor. She looked barely out of high school and as Dark Lightening says she certainly didn't dress the part at times. Someone who, theoretically, had reached the level that "Sue the genetic scientist" had reached at that age would certainly be more "bookish" and not all that glam looking. I think it would have been more fitting if she were Von Doom industries PR liason ... not a scientist.

Thus is the reason why she gets cast in movies at all, that's not happening, thanks to horny teens and dirty old men. I still say her best acting work is on the TV show Flipper.

That's not a good thing. :p

Well of course there would be dissenters.

But at the time, Rachel was the preferred choice for the role among most fans. I can distinctly recall the polls now. She was winning on all of them by a landslide--even SHH's front page poll.

Now I love me some Jessica...but....*sigh* :csad:

Exactly.

Just make her an science engineer and be done with it. That would have been enough to get her clearance for that space voyage.

the reason i wanted mcadams for the role was because, well one she looked the party immensely, two, she can act very very well, and three i thought she could pull off the sofistication that was sue.

but that was in the past, and we have to move on to the future, whether the finishing product sucks or not, i just hope the 2nd one will fix most of the big flukes in the first one.

You took the next words out of my mouth. Rachel is a superb actress--and the critics love her. She was already on a winning streak in film at the time. And to be honest, she would have brought more credibilty, clout and bankability to the first film than Jessica.

So I don't understand the logic behind that. But we've got Jessica. And I like Jessica. But Jessica needs to improve.

critics named her their fav breakout actress of 2005. there is no question that she cannot take a role and make it her own and believable. and yes i thought she could have brought more to the role as well.

well u have to compromise with what you have, and i'm sure jessica will step it up this time around.

You know, I used to say something similar about Halle Berry (X-Men's Storm) but I've finally stopped because....well. *points to X-Men 3*

Oh no doubt she was the Baleesque level fav i was just saying to JAL that it's not just b/c Jessica was cast that there is heat
Different levels of heat i agree but say if SMG or Lohan or someone in the vein known more for looks than talent the backlash would have been equal, hell even a respected actor like RDJ is getting hate for being cast as IM

BTW i thought Jessica did well, she just needed a chance to be more motherly to johnny and conveyed her intelligence well despite the clothes they gave her IMO

I thought Gruffud was lacking in having any sort of presence at all,he got dorky down and nervous but had no force in any of the climactic scenes IMO and Julian sounded bored most of the time and i know he can do better cos ive seen him on Nip/Tuck

Damn right it ain't, but unfortunately her career after Flipper consists of being a sex-pot, at least she played her character a bit convincingly in Flipper. Studios execs., screenwriters and directors, all know that the horny only wants to see her goodies (Into The Blue), not her bad acting.

I think that the direction was the problem with the actors performance more so than the actors themselves. On that not I think what we got was a result of the little time story had to prep for this movie and the weak script.

When you have a young inexperience director (big budget) there is going to be a lot of uncertainty as to how to handle these characters.

Not that somewhere chris evens asked story if he could improv and he was told to go for it. His performance was obviously the best of all the cast.

Chicklis had the most experience with the character and so his performance was right up there with the torch.

However look at some of the lousy lines that Mcmahon had, and the flat acting at times of reed and sue, the moments when the seemed really uncomfortable in the scene. Sometimes it worked like when sue knocked reed down and other times it was like what, that Marco Polo line comes to memory.

I think that Tim deferred to a lot of the more experienced actors like Julian and Loan but their characters were very poorly written so they produced what was in the script. This happens a lot when there is so little time to really prep and rewrite scenes when you know they are weak.

Ben Stiller did a lot of this on the NATM I hear.

So whoever is vetting the scripts at Fox need to be more thourough.

Now having said all that I think that Tim recognized what was the major problem with the movie.

As ultimate said it was the script.

Remember what we kept hearing that they wanted to make sure they had a good script. Fanboys were screaming about filming starting in August amidst reports of the script still being written.

Well the thing is is that in Hollywood filming starts a lot these days even when the script is not done, cause they keep working on things the director identifies as being not up to snuff.

That is the major reason i think FF2 will be much better. I think Tim Story is more confident, the suits trust him more, he is putting more of his creativity into the movie and making this film truly his vision.

Everything we have heard and seen about this film has been positive so far. Tim is clearly not some arrogant dude who does not listen to the fans as is rumoured with some other prominent superhero directors (who will remain nameless), I will say though that you can go too far as that nameless former Xmen director pointed out as regards us fickle fans, and I think he is right.

Its funny if Tim delivers and from what I have seen and heard Ithink that he will. Then he will be the next hot commodity who studios will be clamoring for to take care of their properties.

I think FF2 will be a very good addition to the genre.

i talked to 2 comic shop owners today and one said he was blown away by the trailer and the other who is super jaded said he was actually impressed, and hyped for the movie even more so than Spidey3.

I was feeling this film before but guys I think the buzz for FF2 is really building.

I've seen Alba do better than what she did in FF, hopefully she'll put some more feeling into it this time.

WOW i never thought i would see you say such a thing. :wow:

I gotta say, McAdams seemed perfect for the part, but Alba (sex appeal aside) brings a new charisma to the character (when she wasn't whinning away). :)

Edit- On Triple F's note. Can we get an option on the poll asking the Writers to step up their game? :D

My ego and fanboyism doesn't prevent me from calling out what is clearly inexcusable. How much I may have cheerleadered for certain films or actors becomes inconsequential if it proves to be for naught.

;)

I'd vote for that in a New York minute. I am not so high on Don Payne yet and are we really sure just who's script they are using? I know his script did propose the Surfer angle.

For some reason when i think of the dept of Ms. Alba's acting chops in the upcoming film. i cringe and think of these screen captures i took from the teaser.

Please in that last shot explain to me, why isn't she looking to her right like everyone else in the scene?

She seems to be looking at the revs crotch as if his fly is open and his wang is hanging out and has a wart on it cos she is giving it the "ewwwwwwww that's nasty" face

The flower girl just pulled her finger, forcing her to cut the cheese in a most inauspicious manner.

Really? I seem to remember the front page and forum poll being pretty much in his favor.

If you view the trailer, you will see that her facial expression is because of the sound she hears as the Surfer is breaking the sound barrier. If you take those frames and single them out, then indeed it looks like either someone broke wind, or Reed's part is growing.
