He can only really be seen as poor man's Vader for the first hour or so, until they start pulling back the layers on him and revealing that's all a facade he's putting on as he's trying to live up to the legacy of his grandfather. The fact he's somewhat poor man's Vader (not how I'd put it but those are the words you used) for a bit is the point, he's trying to be Vader, though he's his own distinct character. He's one of the most fascinating additions to the universe, as far as I'm concerned.
While I know that he was trying to live up to vader but even so I thought the similarities to him where to much and his tantups he threw reminding me to much of hayden Christensen.
Again, I think this is intentional. He even resembles Hayden Christensen, with the long hair and dark robes.
But ever body hated hayden christenses so why do people like version 2.0?
I've said it before, but Kylo really reminded me of Theon Greyjoy with his issues living up to his family's legacy and forcing himself to do horrible deeds in order to "prove" himself. In that sense I don't think he's evil or a monster in the way Rey insists.
And he's a better actor. Probably the most important factor.
Kylo's waaaaaaaay worse than Theon though.
He's yet to murder children.

Much better acting and much better writing.
He may very well have with Luke's students.
And much better plot lol. (Okay thats enough of that)
Its amazing to me how willing we all were to accept the archetype as long as it was done correctly. Its almost like Abrams was doing it to prove a point.
The bottom line is, prequel Anakin is not who I was expecting for a young Vader. Anakin as described in the OT, (and granted, as I imagined in my head) was a gallant hero, tough, smart, resourceful and took the wrong path.
This character works because he is new. He doesn't have to live up to a pre-established practically perfect badass villain from 20 years ago. In fact, the idea that he cannot live up to that villain is part of the construct of his character.
Well played JJ and Driver.

Theon greyjoy?
This character is irredeemable in my eyes after the second viewing.
Dude, yes to everything you said. The Anakin homages were heavily present within Kylo not to mention that Ben is sporting granpapa's exact same hairdo as well.I freaking love Kylo. The performance, the characterization, everything about him is just magnetic to watch. His voice is just too perfect.
I have to say though, when he shouts "TRAITOR!" at Finn the delivery reminds me exactly of the way Hayden shouts "LIAR!" at Obi-Wan before the Mustafar duel. They both do it in this bratty way. And I don't mean that in a bad way, I love feeling the continuity in those moments and feeling like, "Yup this is Vader's grandson".
Obviously, Driver's performance overall is way better but I couldn't help notice the similarity in that little moment.
