Kylo Ren in a nutshell.

(kinda spoiler-ish)

Darth Vader had a lot more blood on his hands.

Yeah, but body count isn't what I'm basing my own personal feelings on Kylo's redemption. I'm not rooting for Ren regardless of who has the higher kill score.

#rules
new ones spring up every week around here.

It's not a new rule. It's the very definition of the word villain.

I guess next you're going to tell me it's only a cartoon. :whatever:

Villains are supposed to be menacing not funny.

I dont remember any jokes played at the expense of any previous Star Wars villain (Vader, Emperor, Maul, Dooku, Sidious, or even Anakin after he turned)

Dude, yes to everything you said. The Anakin homages were heavily present within Kylo not to mention that Ben is sporting granpapa's exact same hairdo as well.

They both have that creeper flair to them. I also liked how at one point he is straight up arguing with Supreme Leader Snoke in the same fashion Anakin argued with Obi Wan and the Jedi council at times.

His one scene with Rey was particularly creepy. Both how it was shot, combined with his dialogue and her reaction, made me go "eww."

I don't see why a villain can't be menacing and funny at the same time. Works great for the Joker.

But really, it's not at his expense. The joke is that his own minions are terrified of him.

I laughed when Vader promoted a guy while actively strangling his superior officer.

So that's what we're comparing it to now? Avengers is a cartoon. Star Wars is not. But if that's what it's become then so be it.

I thought Star Wars was supposed to be all about "darkness" but now all we want are jokes? I wish the so-called fans would make up their minds. :whatever:

I really don't see Kylo as similar to Anakin as alot of people seem to. To me, he's a very different character and different personality and different motivations. He seems to be chasing the darkness and seeing the good in him as a weakness, to the point that
he kills his own father
.

Anakin turned to the darkside because he felt he needed to save his wife and child , regardless of the force choke. Kylo was tortured that he wasn't evil enough and wasn't as bad as Vader. There really haven't seen the same type of internal conflict with the light and the dark that there was with Anakin .

I think it was a mistake to put a mask on him. The difference is huge with and without it. I personally liked Ren as an unmasked unstable young man with rage control problems. But it's so different with Ren we saw in the first half of the movie. Who looked pretty uninteresting, as a copy of Vader.

I think making him look like a Vader clone in the first half is intentional. He's desperately trying to be his grandpa. If the mask fits and all that.

Yeah, he's pretty irredeemable for me as well , and the fact that I don't like him makes it even more so. I'm not gonna be rooting for him to be turned back to the light and "saved" by Rey or Luke.

I agree.. We really didn't know Obi wan when Vader did what he did.. It was after that, we really got to know Obi wan through his spirt form advising Luke.. That being said ... Kylo Ren is irredeemable in my opinion.. Honestly I could care less about him as the main antagonist.. It feels like they are going for a weird twisted dark side version of Luke... With Anakin mixed in there.. It just doesn't feel right and he comes of as a lack luster villain in my opinion. If they are basing the conclusion of the this trilogy with him turning..idk.. It just doesn't work in my opinion.. He could save Leia in some conflict and still he would not be any better in my eyes.

I understand that, but, as a consequence, unmasking felt really silly. People LAUGHED on my view. It felt just wrong. You deconstruct this badass dark knight into a guy, who's too human, unsure of himself, has emotional problems.

That being said, I really liked Adam Driver as Ren. In some moments I felt like he was Anakin done RIGHT. Acting was top notch and for some unknown reason, in the scene where he kills Han Solo, I felt for the guy. Even though there was no goddamn build up, explanation of his motives, his backstory, why he fell for the Dark Side and so on. It was powerful, but it could've been MUCH better, if we knew what's the deal with him.

Maybe the deconstruction was a wee steeped yeah. Plus I think Adam's slightly nerdy looks played up the petulance in his character.

Yep. One of the reasons. The mask and his own look made insane contrast.

My girlfriend who saw the movie with me expected someone way hotter to emerge from under the mask, given that he's supposed to be Han and Leia's kid :funny:

I think, Adam Driver is pretty freaking hot, and I'm not even gay. There's weird charm about him, IMO.

With the mask on he was doing a good job of living up to Vader.

Taking it off twice in the first film was a bit much. The second scene with Han made sense to do it but I think that should have been the first time.

The "comparison" is more like people thinking that this is how you do PT Anakin well. You want to make young Anakin into a whiny brat, fine. I don't agree with that, but whatever. But it should have been a petulance more like this, as opposed to being just an annoying, whiny, creepy stalker.

Not exactly the same of course, but more along these lines.

I just watched Kristian Harloff's interview with Adam Driver and I love how he once again worked Darth Plagueis in there :funny:
