I think it's the first premiere. Don't know about the second question.
I was also wondering if they where showing the movie today. A premiere without any footage is pretty lame.

It could also be some sort of "Fan Event" only.

I thought so too but I assumed it’s because they still have the other half of the world to visit so they just started with the US.

I can only imagine what it was like when Return of the Jedi came out. Hopefully this movie follows up better than that one did.

Without the internet, the desperation for spoilers was hilarious in retrospect. (We didn't even have a word for them) ... however, it was made clear that that was IT and no more was coming, very bittersweet, so at least with this there's more- just different.
