Paul Greengrass has directed Bloody Sunday, The Bourne Supremacy, United 93, and the upcoming Bourne Ultimatum.

Basically Greengrass is into more gritty, realistic drama type of content. He wouldn't be a good fit for F4 IMHO.

^^ you said it man, to realize these great stories, care and attention is needed, Tim Story has that in droves but I don't think Fox respects him enough. They treated MSJ and Bryan Singer, Ratner very similarly.

Tim Story is not the problem here. If Fox brings in a big name Director will they take their hands off, and if so, why not keep Tim Story who has a grasp of the stuff and is improving by leaps and bounds.

I say give Tim another shot at it. I think he is the only thing that has kept this ship from tanking big time really.

I think Story could benefit from having a strong presense in some sort of executive producer position. Someone like a Spielberg or even a Peters(or what's his name that does all the Armegeddon type movies?) who can buck the suits on some of the stronger points that I'm sure he wanted to get through. Then we might see the real Tim Story and a closer FF representation.

With FF 3 I think Tim Story should be fired, unless we want 3 strikes.:woot:

Question is... is there any word or hint we are getting a part 3? The box office numbers are getting me nervous!

Exactly, from what i have seen of this franchise so far Story isnt the problem, FOX is, remove them from the equation and i think we could have gotten 2 FF that would have at least been better than what we have gotten so far.

There is one site saying that a 3rd is coming.....I would take any word at this point as a "grain of salt" until Fox makes an official announcement...

I have been reading this for years:
"It's not the directors fault. It's those Godless Reptilian Baby-Rapists at FOX!"

Would anyone explain to me how Fox is responsible for the lame things in
F42?

I think the expression you are searching for is 'take it WITH a PINCH/GRAIN of salt' not 'take it AS a grain of salt.' :cwink:

Studio suits can sometimes interfere and lay down rules/parameters as to what they want in a movie. They might insist on certain characters being prominent (Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in X-Men for instance), on certain events happening (like wanting Cyclops dead and totally out of the movie... and not wanting any Phoenix at all until the writers argued for it).

Studio suits also control budgets, and that affects creativity. Sentinels and many other things were cut from X2 due to budgetary constraints, and stuff was cut from X1 and X3 as well. Budgetary restraints or other higher decisions might well have affected the Galactus and Doom portrayals as much as they have affected Wolverine, Cyclops, Phoenix, Sentinels and many other factors in the X-movies. The writers of X3 said they lost all of their battles over what would happen in the second part of the movie.

Welcome to the real world!

Welcome to the real world!

The real world sucks :csad:

Are we really fearing a FF3 will never happen? C'mon, the numbers aren't that bad, right? And worldwide it hasn't been released in many places...

I've no idea - we've no idea - if a FF3 will happen. But I'd like it to happen - bring on the Inhumans!

We have it on no less of an authority from the head writer on the first FF Mark Frost himself that FF1 was a studio driven property and as such he wrote a script that catered to the concerns of the studio. Now the studios concerns are usually budgetary and return on investment driven.

Mark said he basically went along with it. So many of the problems FF has been fighting to overcome can be laid at the feet of the suits.

FF2 was a huge step up from the first where Tim was largely responsible for bringing in the surfer and a new writer.

Now granted I think his direction of Julian is flawed but the little nuances he puts in these movies are appreciated. Granted he is not a Del Toro or Rodriguez or Snyder yet (note how most of these guys love/have a lot of control on their movies) but seriously his misteps are minuscule when you realize that the studio is basically deciding on the story and what should be included and then a script is written.

In other words they are not laying out a broad theme, commissioning scripts and picking the best, no they are detailing the movie and hiring the writer to provide dialog to their carefully (lol) thought out concepts, then assigning a director to deliver on their ideas. I think they are trusting in their vision a bit too much and need to realize that they are suits for the most part and weak on creativity and they don't realize or are refusing to admit that they are producing movies that are lacking a certain umph.

That's it, and that's the problem.

Story is not a director with an understanding and a vision of the material. He is just an easy name to be manipulated. :cmad:

He lies in interviews on the interest of Fox.

Thanks for the responses.
I was looking for specifics though.
When you look at one of the horribly lame elements of F42, I think people's knees just jerk and they say, "Damn Fox!"

But, Tim Story did, uh, have a hand in the movie.
How do you know it wasn't his ineptitude?

There are meny specific instances where we know that the studio called for a change that was lame.
But that doesn't just mean, if a movie sucks, welp, it was the studio's fault.

I´d say that his directing improved considerably from the first, but he still works with ****ty scripts.

That he would defend a flawed script and even lie about aspects to save the bottom line is the part that concerns me. This movie definitely stepped up in terms of action, but he's still approving the cheesy elements that make this just another summer popcorn flick instead of a movie to remember.

Story loves cheesy crap, it's what all but one of his films is filled with. Yes, Fox is the problem, but if you don't think Story isn't a helping hand in the Fantastic Crap we get, think again sweetheart. Story has no vision, no substance, and even no style. For those of you who think he's really good, drive to a Blockbuster and rent the film "Taxi." One of the s****iest and worst reviewed films of all time, directed by the genius that is Tim Story. It was an abomination to all that is cinema, it's close in ranks with House of the Dead. If he's reading this, then this is a reality check. The first movie was terrible, it ruined a possible great franchise and series. The F4 had the chance to be as big as the X-Men, if not bigger, but because Story was chosen by exes to save a little cash, the film was one of the worst of '05. And now this year, so FF2 was a step up from FF1 but it was still very mediocre and the critics and number of people who saw it tend to agree. This movie had a what? 30 Million increase from the first film, and now it's BO return is the exact same, if not worse.

And with the curse of the 3rd film, if Story does FF3, it'll probably be even worse. But to look on the bright side of Story, if they replace him and get someone else FF3 will still probably suck.

This thread has reached maturity--and all sides of the issue have been efficiently heard. Right now, this has simply evolved into a director bashing match...so we've come full circle.

Closing.
