How brutal do you think it'll look on screen when they show the city after the "alien invasion" happens, or at least how much can they show with an R rating?

There is no 'alien' invasion.

Even as far back as the horrible Sam Hamm script effort of the late 80s, NO professional scripter has included this ending in a Watchmen movie draft, including David Hayter.

And that includes current writer Alex Tse. His draft dated Nov. 10 2006 which is on its way to being the one filmed incorporates the exact same ending as his very first attempt from summer last year.

Which is: Veidt unleashes a deadly energy ray into the atmosphere from his Antarctic fortress, synthesized from Dr Manhattan himself. This strikes down back to earth in the form of blue lightning, hitting several key cities worldwide (no longer just NYC). In total, seven million people are vaporized on the spot as a result. The way in which its done by Veidt is designed to frame Dr Manhattan, making mankind believe that Big Blue is responsible for this devastation having finally had enough of our warlike ways. The idea behind this deception is to fool our leaders into thinking that Manhattan will always be watching over us henceforth, so therefore play nice as a race from now... or else.

There you go. Not a gloopy tentacle in sight.

Hollywood is NOT going to show us a city clogged with twisted corpses and rivers of blood flowing in the streets, folks, no matter WHAT the rating.
Did you seriously believe for one minute they would...?

1. Thanks for explaining that.
2. Yeah, I thought there was going to be corpses all over the place because I thought this film was going to be very true to the comic.

This is horrible.

Watchmen on film can of course never be as good as the novel, but the only way it can even keep a good name for itself is to stay faithful to the source material. They'd better not do this.

It makes more sense to have the invasion on a more global scale but if Snyder has fought for an R rating, has it set in 1985, wants to shoot the pirate comic book then and this being the ending I don't see a big change like that.

Whats wrong about a bunch of dead bodies with some blood lying in the streets? Same stuff from Iraq in the news just on a larger scale and "in America".

Well, we are talking the same director who's planning on having Dan kill Veidt at the end... by piloting the Owlship through a window on remote control where it lands on and crushes Ozy to death.

No, really.

Hopefully, someone in the room will raise these issues with Snyder himself when he appears at Comic Con and puts himself up for some fan Q&A on the 27th, and he can explain his reasoning for such deviations (among others).

After all... Hollywood does great aliens nowadays! He could even improve on the original if he wanted to.

Yes, anyone who'se going to ComicCon, you need to battle this out.

So what's the new name of this ripoff of Watchmen?

I didnt read the Watchmen until just recently, and when I read the ending I instantly thought "I wonder how they'll re-write this for the movie?". It just seems like something that wouldnt make it to the film translation. Too hard to explain to audiences, too much time to explain the island and everything. Well not really, really they'll just change it cause they suck.

I really want to see this! I mean they did that huge tripod with War of the Worlds so I assume they could do this.

Sorry. No Aliens, they're not believable.... in a world with a blue naked guy with a one-eyed monster that just screams, look at me!

I swear if the movie ends like this then Snyder will be the biggest hack in hollywood.

Keep the ending the same its great If people can understand it from reading the book then people can get it from watching it on screen.

It's a ****ing alien that has psyhic powers which it imprints on its victims minds telling them that aliens exist and are attacking. Thusly unites all human race and brings world peace mainly between USA and Russian during arms race.

I don't see what about the above paragraph I wrote that average movie goers wouldn't understand if they saw a movie with that plot and ending.

If they f it up its Snyders fault for not fighting the dumb ass writers and producers.

He should be walking off the set and giving the studio a finger if they demand this new ending version.

this new ending is gay.

Yeah. People are going to a movie about superheroes that exist in real life set in the eighties and they aren't going to be able to wrap their heads around how one of those heroes actually makes temporary world peace through making humanity think aliens are attacking.

V for Vendetta was a very watered down translation of the Alan Moore graphic novel so it could be easily spoon fed to immature audience members who just think politics is a simple case of good and bad. I fear this will never improve on the masterpiece that is the Watchmen, yet alone do it justice in conveying a universal message.

I don't think you get it... it's not a matter of "If you fight the studio hard enough, victory is guaranteed." He can fight the studio to a point, but they still ultimately have control, not him, and if he fights too hard, they get sick of him and they can him, and replace him with some two-bit yes-man hack who'll let the studio turn into a bull**** action-thriller for mass consumption.

Zack Snyder is committed to keeping this as true to the comic as possible, but there are some things he just will not win on, and it's ignorant to blame him for anything that goes wrong with the film.

Is the "big laser" ending what we want? No. Of course not. Will it detract from the film? For the fans of the comic (of which I am a member), yes. But, upon further analysis, I think the big laser ending does a fairly decent job of essentially preserving the purpose of the original ending, at least at the most basic levels. It may destroy some important symbolism that is understood only by the most hardcore of readers and the occasional literature professor who bothers to read Watchmen, but it still maintains the "ends justify the means" question, and is changed in such a way that the entire rest of the story could essentially remain intact.

Although some may disagree, I don't think that keeping the alien monster is as important as keeping Viedt alive, in regards to preserving the intent of the original comic. Although I consider the discussion between Dr. Manhattan and Viedt to be very important, I don't think it's AS important as the discussion between Dan and Viedt, where Dan and Laurie come to the conclusion that the only way to preserve peace is to go along with what Viedt did, and I don't see how that could work with Dan killing Viedt. Taking the Manhattan-Viedt conversation out would definately cause the film to lose something, but Dan killing Viedt would likely ring false and illogical to intelligent moviegoers who hadn't even read Watchmen.

moore always said if he wrote it now he would have a different ending that redeems niteowl.he never said what but i hope that is what snyder is doing.

That sounds really tricky... I mean, if he could get something in there that matches up with how Moore would have wanted it, then that's the ideal, but it could be very easy to ***** up.

Either way, it's interesting that he said that. I never really felt that Dreiberg needed redeeming. Does anyone have any idea as to what that would involve?

Niteowl is redeemed. He taps Jenny in Ozy's mansion.... story over.
