Agatha Christie's 'Death on the Nile'

Fox or Scott Free/TSG may have had a preexisting distribution deal for the film to be released first on Hulu.

I want to watch this because I enjoyed the last one but man, it’s going to be hard to stomach a movie with so many scummy people. Usually it’s just one problematic actor like the previous film!) and that’s not to hard to deal with but this one… whew.

Does it help that they’re playing scummy people as well?

Maybe? That’s actually a good question because at least you don’t also have to root for them. Sitting through the next Ant-Man or Black Panther movies will probably be tougher in that regard.

Well, the 45-days window is really short. Time flies.

Well it tanked at the box office I think. For most movies, 45 days makes sense

Did it? I think it did kind of decent in the US, all things considered, because this film had a lot of baggage. Decent enough to get a sequel at least. People knowing and getting used to the idea of something being available in just six weeks surely doesn't help a movie's performance, though.

It only made $134M ($45M domestic) on a $90M budget. Probably didn’t break even when you include marketing costs.

Sure, but even by not taking into account the pandemic, it was pretty much buried by Disney in marketing and press, not just per usual, in a way they've treated almost all their Fox movies after the buyout, but even more so because of Armie Hammer and a few other controversial names in the film. The fact that despite those numbers they still have confirmed that a sequel is in development means they see some promise.

Yeah I dont doubt Disney considers it a success, all things considered. Whether they will greenlight a third is unknown, but some other Poirit books are public domain with more becoming PD over time. Branagh could maybe make a third film without Disney or at the very least only distributed by Disney, and financed by others.

At what point do you stop blaming the pandemic on box office and just come to terms with the fact that the movie tanked? I feel like the goal posts keep shifting especially when you have movies like Spider-Man NWH breaking box office records and The Batman killing it right now? Free Guy made over $300M on a $100M budget (similar to Death on the Nile). I feel like if a movie does well, everyone says “movies are back! theaters aren’t dead” and if it tanks, “oh well the pandemic…the marketing wasn’t there, etc…”

Even in a good pre covid year, itd be a bad idea to hold a film like Nile up against an MCU film or a solo Batman film. And frankly I'm not convinced Bats will even hit $1 billion so I wouldnt even hold it up against Spiderman. And Free Guy is a poor comparison against Nile, because it has so much pop culture propping it up, and it is a light hearted action adventure. Nile is a slow burn adult whodunit with one action scene that doesn't last 2 minutes. Its cast is a draw but not by much.

I guess you could say for certain films franchises movies are back. For others, the movies are very much not back or jusr barely back. For some things movies may never be back simply because people think they don't need a theater release at the best of times and not at all during covid surges. This is the world we live in now, and Hollywood is going to have to be forgiving with some things and make bank with other things when they can between surges.

Just finished watching this movie and got to say, it was pretty enjoyable. Of course I knew the killers pretty early on, but the journey to getting there was fun. Really liked Branagh in the role. Haven’t seen the first one but will probably get to it soon.

Overall, 7.5/10 for me

6/10 - Unbearably boring first hour but then gets more fun during the last hour. Also too bad the killer could be guessed within the first 10 minutes.

The first two sections with the war and then the club were a strong start, then it gets and dull and boring and drags for a looong time before getting a bit interesting again. I predicted where it would end up and it did in the end, so I was happy about that. It’s overall passable at best like the first one but nothing exceptional.:down

The one thing I didn’t 100% get was Branagh’s girlfriend from the beginning of the movie. Did she leave him or did she die? I think he explained it but I didn’t catch all of it.

She Died.
Killed by a Mortar Shell.
Probably an airstrike.
Poirot Blamed himself because she was coming to see him the time.
They were going to spend Christmas together.

I watched this Saturday on Hulu and had a feeling it would be a step down from the 1st movie but it really was forgettable. Some shots in this movie looked like a millions bucks and then others like a $1. The acting was good overall but it really wasn't hard to figure out the killer rather early in the movie. I would be shocked if there is a 3rd movie given how buried this movie was.

If you ask me that excuse died the day kong vs Godzilla came out. Movies were back then and if a movie tanked post Godzilla v kong then that is on the movie itself.
