New interview with Joss Whedon about the original run time for AOU http://www.vulture.com/2015/04/how-age-of-ultron-nearly-broke-joss-whedon.html

Whedon’s first cut of Age of Ultron came in at nearly three and a half hours; eventually, he and Feige worked together to slice the film down to 142 minutes. “There's one or two things that I'm unhappy about not having in there, but they're small,” said Whedon. “I said to Kevin before we started, 'My secret fantasy that'll never come true is that the second one is shorter than the first.' And we're shorter by a minute.” The first Avengers film still weighs heavily on Whedon’s mind, though not for the reasons you might think. With rave reviews and a $1.5 billion worldwide gross, it was a success in almost every way imaginable and immediately established Whedon, until then best known for his TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, as an A-list feature filmmaker. It seemed like everyone loved the movie ... everyone, that is, except the director.

“When I watch it, I just see 'flaw, flaw, flaw, compromise, laziness, mistake,’” said Whedon. “The reason I set out to make another film is because I wanted to make one that was better, and I wanted to up my game as a shooter and work harder on every aspect of it and sort of give myself up to it in a way that's hard for me, because I have a family. I started as a writer in low-budget TV, and there was always this element of, ‘This is good enough.’ And with this movie, I never wanted to say, ‘This is good enough.’”

Though he gave his all to Age of Ultron, Whedon hasn’t been able to watch the final cut all the way through yet — “I tried,” said the typically hard-on-himself filmmaker, “and I had a terrible time” — but he’s heartened by the glowing reaction online from early press screenings. “Is it perfect? It is not,” said Whedon. “Is it me? It's so baldly, nakedly me. To do something that is as personal as this movie is — on that budget, for a studio that needs a summer tentpole — is an extraordinary privilege.”

thats a dumb fantasy
lol

...I don't want him to die, I'll be very upset if he does, but he's one of the few characters who is not a main Avenger and who also is known enough to the audience that they might give a crap if he dies. And these movies are not strangers to killing off a character to give another motivation/angst and Whedon is not Shane Black, so it's kinda weird to act like two different directors would write exactly the same. Just because Black dropped the ball with a character's reaction doesn't mean Whedon would. We'll know for sure soon anyway.

But WHAT motivation/angst? Coulsen's fake death? There has either been fake deaths or pointless deaths.

How about them using motivation to keep each other alive. That'd be far more interesting. Humans don't appreciate anything until it's gone. I see why Ultron is around, he's probably right.

1. I don't agree with Ultron :yay:

2. I do agree with you that death isn't the only way to challenge characters. But I do think injury/death should be used to convey the threat posed by Ultron. I think the reference in the EW article to a permanent and fake death in AoU will be for this purpose. But characters can change for a number of equally good/better reasons than killing someone (although Whedon is fond of this so who knows).

I don't think it will be BW who bites the dust in AoU since she did in an interview with Collider where she discusses being in future MCU films.

She will be back but her character will be very different. ScarJo talked about Widow having false hope in AoU so I think that Banner is going to actually reject her. How she reacts to this is going to set up her character for CW. ScarJo also mentions that Widow choses duty and (in a previous interview) how her choices cause 'ripples'. But as a spy who will she work for?

Widows character won't die but will be very different/unrecognisable by CW.

well we now know Quicksilver makes it to the final battle, at least

One of the drones.

I agree with this actually, I think pulling another death in an Avengers movie when they did the same thing in the last one is super dumb (and generally I'm not a big fan of character death unless it's done right and actually sticks), but unless they're talking about the JARVIS -> Vision transition we're getting one. I'm glad it's not BW at least :yay:

Have the spoiler reviews came out yet? I just want confirmation on if Thanos makes an appearance.

Agreed. Fake deaths are super-dumb in general and as much as I love Avengers, Coulson's death was as dumb as any other fake death, but made mega-dumb by the fact that he appears and stars in a TV show straight after. To do anything like that again in the very next film would be ultra-dumb. :yay:

It's probably War Machine. Selvig and Barton's wife are not nearly important enough.

Or maybe it's Quicksilver as previously rumored.

But my money is on War Machine.

I think it's a good chance Rhodey will die in this one. Plus Hawkeye's wife. lol.
