Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents of SHIELD TV series for ABC - General Discussion - LEVEL 10

You know, given Coulson's whole reaction to SHIELD's Downfall, and his "big" speeches as of late, I feel the show is trying to imply that Captain America made a bad call in ending SHIELD for good as opposed to going with Fury's original idea in trying to salvage the organization.

I mean we see Coulson and the good agents all broken up about having nowhere to go, and Coulson making a BIG DEAL on how SHIELD is supposedly the only people that can protect the world and now that SHIELD is no longer there, people are at risks....but with the way CA:TWS ended, it concluded with the notion that ending SHIELD was for the best.

Anyone else confused about this?

I think the time jump in Winter Soldier between the end of the battle at the Triskellion and Cap's healing/the Senate hearings etc is something the show is still lagging behind (the show has pretty much run without any jump since Cap took down the hellicarriers) so Maria's appearance in the next one is likely to be before her job interview at Stark Industries for example.

So atm, for the AOS timeline, there's still a 'power grab' going on, with Hydra and the remaining Shield agents (being replaced by Nato by the looks of it) fighting over their biggest bases and so on. I would imagine the result of that, and Shields final fate (official disbandment, senate hearings etc), will be caught up with by the season finale.

As Pearce said, 'to build a better world sometimes you have to tear the old one down' and I think that's how they are gonna take AOS. Sheild as it was will be gone, but there's nothing to stop them starting over from scratch (with more limited powers in future I would think).

The unusual threats are still out there after all, as Age Of Ultron will address, so I think that Shield coming back in some form would be likely (and necessary for the show to continue under the same name).

...I'm still out on Fitz n Simmons being an item.
I'm surprised the fact one's Irish and the other British hasn't been explored.

Aside from the fact Fitz isn't Irish, what would there be to explore exactly...?

Unless they kill one, FitzSimmons will always be FitzSimmons... Be it in a romantic sense or a sibling sense, those two will be a pair IMHO. They're too closely linked to be able to break them apart.

What Cap --- and Widow, and Tony --- are doing in Phase II are setting The Avengers up to be THE power players from here on out. Earth's Mightiest Heroes sort of thing. The point of all these movies is to establish The Avengers as earth's defense force, *not* to rely on a corruptible government agency like SHIELD.

That being said, I think Season 2 of AOS will be about Coulson re-establishing a Kinder, Gentler SHIELD under his directorship (see my avatar). The Avengers won't be part of that, and will be their own self-contained entity, just like in the comics; but they'll be more likely to cooperate with SHIELD under Coulson's leadership than under Fury's paranoid dictatorship.

AOU is the big question mark here. If it turns out that Tony creates Ultron (as it's been hinted at) then the argument could change completely. One of the Avengers created a robot that then went berserk and tried to exterminate all organic life on Earth. You also have a mentally-unstable witch with god-like power running around unsupervised. If that happens, then all of a sudden, the Avengers don't look so squeaky clean and a "corruptible" government agency starts to look like a necessary option to a lot of people.

I think that's what they're going for. All this time, they've been building up SHIELD as a corrupt and untrusted organization, all the way from Phase 1 to TWS. They even had the Avengers break off from SHIELD by the end of the first film to show how much they didn't trust the organization. But now they seem to be going the other way by making the public -both in the universe and in real life - question if the Avengers are any better or any more efficient than SHIELD was.

It's way too early for Civil War.

Civil War mostly happened because it was like a decade and half since heroes became publically known and there was hundreds of heroes, some of whom were just untrained kids and some kids made a blunder that got alot of people killed. Which lead the government to demand hero oversight and training.

That's not really viable now when only a handful of heroes seem to exist. All of which have public identities.

Civil War should never happen. It was a poor attempt at incorporating politics with superheroes, and butchered many Marvel characters from the Marvel universe. Some of them (i.e. Spider-Man) still haven't fully recovered from it. Iron Man became the most hated superhero in all of comics, with Quesada coming out and admitting the only thing that saved him was the success of his movie. Plus, I can't picture MCU's Tony doing what Civil War's Tony did (though I'd argue that Tony was out of character too). Marvel is better off staying as far away from Civil War as possible IMO.

If there were any plans in introducing the Civil War Storyline in the MCU, then there would not be a need to introduce the Guardians.

I really hope we get to see Coulson show up all triumphantly as the new Director of SHIELD in AoU
I can just picture a moment where the Avengers at a low point, out of resources and on the run, and from off camera you hear his voice, cut to Coulson stepping off the bus, big music, shocked Avengers with mouths agape.
It'd be awesome.

Isn't Gyrich over at fox? Or would he be one of those shared characters?

Lol, that was a great impression of Simmons. And I'm glad Skye did it. That makes her sexier. :hrt:

Explosive hmmmm.

[BLACKOUT]It's possible that Koenig only shows up thru flashback, or he's somehow alive. Perhaps Ward killed an LMD rather than the real Koenig.[/BLACKOUT]
