It feels like something any Hollywood director would tackle for the older biopic crowd.

Dunkirk also sounded like a it could be a generic war movie when it was announced and look at the unique thing he turned it into. Same thing with Fincher and The Social Network. I had no idea how that was going to work and didn't get it until I saw the film. That was still a David Fincher movie and not a generic biopic.

I've always been interested in his Howard Hughes biopic so I'm down for this. Oppenheimer is also potentially an even more fascinating figure with very big and ominous, almost sci-fi esque themes you can explore...except it's real life.

There's a lot about this can get very Nolan-y when you start thinking about the ideas at play.

This is probably the first time I am not intrigued about a Nolan movie at all.

Yeah, I just want to say that the people who were dunking on Nolan and saying he was acting like a diva for taking public shots at WB and leaving them misread the story. Some of these same folks were also at the time trying to say that theaters are done and saw no issue with what WB did because they didn't get how broken the streaming model actually is. I get it, streaming is great and super convenient, but what a lot of people weren't thinking about is that it's come at a great cost and strain to the industry and the creative professionals in it. Nolan did the right thing not rewarding WB for their reckless stupidity. What happened with Tenet is its own story, what WB did was something much bigger and dangerous for the industry. Nolan recognized that. It was about a lot more than "movies must be seen on the big screen" preciousness.

The WGA and SAG strikes we're seeing now are the direct result of exactly what he was talking about. The streaming model is a complete disaster in its current form. I am so pleased that a line is finally being drawn in the sand and I am really hoping this moves in the right direction.

I think people were kind of ignorant to question Nolans motive with those things. Throughout 2020, I had numerous people tell me that my defense of theaters was "inconsiderate" towards those that are financially struggling, and that it's "good for me" that going to the cinema isn't financially impactful, but for most families it is. And yet, 3 years later, despite the box office bombs of this past summer, theaters are doing very well. Horror films are thriving at the box office, No way home, Avatar 2, Top Gun Maverick and films like that made a crap ton of money. Streaming, on the other hand, has presented numerous problems over the long term. And it's effect are being felt on the actors, the quality of products (Star Wars and the MCU being the biggest examples), etc.

And to be clear, these are hard times economically so I am totally sympathetic to anyone who has to make a hard decision about whether or not to see a movie in theaters. The point was always that movies have a long life cycle and they can work their way to streaming eventually. But that it was wasteful and negligent business to just negate a movie's opportunity to earn profits in theaters to drive up subscriber count for an unproven model.

The current streaming model is closer to a pyramid scheme than people may have realized.

oh absolutely. Hey, even as someone who loves the cinema, I often don't feel like going to repeat viewings as much as I used to. Before, I could see a movie up to 5 times, but now the maximum is usually twice and I'm all set.

Rewatched both Inception and The Prestige recently. Inception is still great. Probably the 2010’s equivalent of The Matrix as far as Sci-fi influence in pop culture. The Prestige blew me away. I hadn’t seen it in probably 15 years, and it’s now one of my favorites.

Has Nolan ever commented on Jordan Peele films? I rewatched Nope and wonder if he was asked about it. I’m sure he wouldn’t say anything negative even if he did think that, but it’s always interesting to hear his thoughts.

I don't know if he's specifically commented on Nope, but they were both nominated in 2017 for Dunkirk and Get Out and were on roundtables together that Oscar season, where he had complimentary things to say about Get Out. Peele also consulted with Nolan about using IMAX for Nope and Peele then worked with Hoyte on it. Seems like they've become pretty friendly with one another and have mutual respect.

Speaking of Nope, I just rewatched it this morning in 4k for the first time since last year, and god Hoyte Van Hoytema is such an incredible cinematographer. His work on Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, Nope, and now Oppenheimer is just staggering.

Discussions about Nolan’s next film (and past unmade films like Howard Hughes) got me thinking about The Prisoner. Wasn’t he at one point going to make an adaptation of the 1960s series? I would love to see that still happen, or is that completely dead?

I was hoping memento and insomnia would get a 4k release but I think I'll pull the trigger and buy both Blu rays to complete my Nolan collection.
