Here's an idea... In the comics the orange/gold classic costume was retconned in the 80's I believe as Atlantean prison garb. Arthur gets captured by the Atlanteans before he has a chance to learn who his true mother is. She even sees him when he is working on a chain gang with and imprisoned Vulko. When he takes the throne finally he continues to wear it as a sort of "in your face" to the Atlanteans. Sort of telling them "You idiots... You locked up your one true King. I'm going to remind you of that everyday." Maybe AquaMomoa has a similar back story, only he was forced into gladiatorial combat? He now wears his armor as a big middle finger to the Atlantean elites. "Guess what... This lowly slave is now your KING. The throne was always mine by birthright. Deal with it."

The way I see it, the Aquaman reveal pretty much needed to be nailed 100% to stop the jokes and make people think "Aquaman looks badass and cool". Judging by the majority reaction online, this picture did the job. From the casting, to the pose and the picture, this is amazing stuff from Snyder, Wilkinson and Enos.
