Well to be fair, I think the more reasonable critics aren't about finding some way in the context of the film that gives the story a different outcome. Their position is more fundamental, that you shouldn't write a Superman story in such a way to begin with. I disagree, while VERY sympathetic to that outlook.

As always... MOS was the Superman movie I didn't even know I wanted.

I do like that Goyer is taking on the online controversy and showing that they were thinking about the ramifications moving into the next film with Superman in it.

Sorry but that's what writer's do. We create situations that we think are interesting.
"what would it be like for a guy who hates the water to have to gout there and fight a 25 foot great white shark"
or "What would it be like for an arachnophobic to have to fight an invasion of brazilian death spiders?"
The same is to be said for this film "What if Superman had no choice but to kill a foe?"

Yes. There is absolutely no good reason to so drastically change GL's origin that much. A very bad idea, IMO.

Once the rumours about Pine being Steve surfaced, I actually jokingly came up with that ridiculous idea.
But now people are actually starting to consider it...

Just let it go... he's not Hal and he's not a GL.

I'm betting we see a lot of neck snapping, or head removing goodness with WW.
Batman seems like he wont be above breaking a few bones either.

I tend to feel that there is a bit of an exception when doing these sort of long lived franchise type characters. I think there is some restriction, some amount of having to color inside the lines, but yeah, you're right.

There is also the great irony of so many calling Superman old hat, predictable and boring, but do something different and you get pushback.

In short, they will fight like a person should fight in life and death situations. :cwink:

It will depend on what the IP owner is willing to let happen to the IP, The studio and the director. Darren Aronofsky may have a kick ass idea for an R-rated Sponge Bob movie but it's up to Nickelodeon and whomever owns SB to actually decide to do it.
Sometimes taking an IP outside of it's establish norms can work wonders. I am sure many people think a Star Trek movie that features very little space would be boring by Voyage Home did just that.

I know a lot of people joked about the idea way back in the day. As a way to connect GL to the JL a little quicker. I didn't actually consider it, and would prefer that they honor the established lore. I would let it slide if they handled it properly, though.

I just ask people that had a problem with what Superman did at the end of Man of Steel to pose an alternative. They can't.

NUH-UH!

Superman could have easily just led Zod away from the city to his fortress that doesn't exist where he could have duped him into getting his powers completely drained so he could have dropped him (non-fatally) into a 50 foot chasm and then spun the earth backwards to reverse everything!

IT'S SO SIMPLE!

I posted this question to a friend of mine who hated MOS...he's response: "He's Superman...he would have thought of something."

Brilliant. I feel like some people don't realize these are movies, not an event they saw broadcasted live on tv. How can you question the decision made by a fictional character in a movie ? "Oh, why didn't he do this or that ?!" Because that's how it was written to happen to fit the story. ****, it's like that crazy lady from friends that though Joey was a real neurosurgeon.

Exactly.

As to Krypton, INC point of not writing Superman into a spot where he had no other choice, I don't know. I suppose they could have landed in the artic after coming back down from space but then we'd miss out on those cool easter egg shots of Blazing Comics. :o

What other way is there? If you don't kill zod, you have him go into the Phantom Zone with the rest or you create some stupid prison cell. Could you imagine the reactions if Zod was in that Hulk prison cell from Avengers? That's the alternative. I'm fine with a snapped neck.

I remember reading this article about one of the writers of Superman the animated series and they'd get lots of mail asking How come Superman didn't do this or do that

Superman having to make the decision killing Zod was not problem for me.

I was simply dissatisfied with the way it was presented in the film.

To be clear, that was not my point, but other fans have said such. I said I disagreed with that view.

*Superman saves everyone and saves the day*

"What a boring character. I can't related to him, he's too perfect! "

*Superman is unable to save everyone. Kills Zod*

"What the ****?! Why did he murder Zod like that and omg so many people died! Why couldn't he save them?! This isn't Superman."

The bad reaction to the killing comes more out of context than out of the deed itself. It makes sense. But after an entire third act that refuses to highlight Superman's care for people in need, it couldn't help but leave behind a bitter taste for the people who wanted to see that. In a better thought-out climax, it would not have been as controversial.

welp, from the look of things in here, it looks like its time for another game of Man of Steel Bingo!

Every time I see a MoS debate on the rise, I patiently wait for Nemeres to pop in with his analysis. I never wait long.

It was really how their entire final fight was presented that dissatisfied me.

I would have liked to have seen one instance in the fight where Superman is shown attempting to save people but fails due to Zod.

I would have liked for Superman to have been the one to take the fight to space instead Zod.

I would have liked to see the violence that Zod and Superman were exerting on each other seem real. By the time they fell from space I would have like to see their faces blooded or some sign of battle damage. Basically the way Superman looked after fighting Doomsday.

But sadly, for me, that didn't happen. All that chaotic violence and Superman's hair wasn't even messy afterwards. I just couldn't buy Superman being able to snap Zod's neck when he couldn't even give him a bloody lip.

I'm posting that every time someone brings up MOS. We can all play some bingo.

Okay. How about those people he saved when he killed Zod? Or do they not count because it was only a small family?
