I've seen Captain Planet & (his source character) Superman. There have been DC & Marvel Amalgams.

Superman is world known. Captain Planet: well i beleive he was rudimentarily developed ... and needs an honest refinement in characterisation.

So 2 Questions:

1] What would an improved re-designed Captain Planet , today's day & age, be like?
The whole backstory, strengths, weaknesses (how much), powers ..etc...

2] Also why not try a Superman + Captain Planet Amalgam?
What would the strengths, weaknesses be. What will be added/eliminated/new hybrid form? What will be good or bad about it?

Suggestions from anybody. Lets discuss.

Not sure if this is the right area to put this thread....but let me know.

Captain Planet wasn't really a character is the problem, we don't know anything about the guy, he's just a plot device who pops into existence when the kids bust out their rings. (Unless we do know something about where he goes when he isn't being popped out of the kids' rings, I didn't watch every episode of that show). So it's hard to combine him personality-wise with someone else.

Great, so what will your personal take be on his abilities or weaknesses ... or what you would the character to be? Where do you think he might go, or where would you want him to go?

would like to hear your personal version.

Honestly, Captain Planet would've been a better show without Captain Planet. He had no personality and only served as a device to wrap up plots lazily and tell aweful jokes. Focusing entire on The Planeteers would have made much more sense to me.

Also, another thing that would have made the show better is if it didn't completely blow.

right Question. so if you were to give captain planet a refresher, what would your idea be?

interesting replies so far....and i notice a lot of captain planet bashing and not wanting to relate superman with him. (if i'm understadning correctly).

But let me give you a bit of my history with this character:

Like many, I watched the show .... and have always felt that the captain planet character & its potential was not at all given justice.

My Feel:
I hated it, when with the powerful rings, these guys could combine partial powers, use science to really put stoppage to problems ... given the rings were so powerful. this was instead of calling captain planet for the sake of calling him - like they were lackeys. -- when the audience could easily see the non-captain planet way out
For E.g.: There was one episode, when their rings got duplicated into anti rings, resulting in captain pollution. In fact characterisation wise, captain pollution was better than captain planet. I don't think it was just because of being a 30min cartoon ... since at time there were other 30min cartoons that had stronger plots. (including spiderman animated, x men etc...)
I mean.."HEY!" what level of problem would really require a Captain Planet to truly save the planet? they were a number of near stories .... but they NEVER met this litmus test.

Yet the original concept was a superman like character ... made up of earth's elements - to protect the planet.

The original person created this character in the (hopeful) likes of superman, but with the ability to be composed of the Earth's elements - and less tangible than superman (obviously)

* So I am willing to look at a complete re-creation, refresher of the character. --- (1)
Now since a hundred brains are better than one ... that's why this thread.
Besides, may characters these days are getting a complete re-boot or makeover or re-telling + they are upgraded to today's times.

So what would make a captain planet (re-designed, re-freshed) and the planeteers a solid character?
... given that today, global warming and natural disasters, terrorism, biological contamination ARE real world problems ... far more than when they were in the 1990s.

How will today's comics or movie or real world climate affect YOUR idea of a re-created captain planet? If you recreated the chracter and planeteers?

So may i request ... for ideas with your thoughts in it .... instead of blaming history, the original cartoon and bailing out please?

(2) Now once Captain Planet is created, how will a new character be ... if we amalgam Captain Planet with Superman?

Here we are looking for concepts of creating this character from scratch, profile, backstory, powers, weaknesses .... potential missions (not limited to environment or captain planet/superman story types)

or where this new entrant to the justice league wil fit in?

so replies, creative suggestions ....

To start with - my idea:

1) Re-Booting Captain Planet
  1. Basis: His powers are composite of the 5 elements [Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Heart].
  2. Looks: Will look similar to the original, but instead of a light green hair, i'd prefer a darker leaf green. More a superman returns dark boots, gloves and chest plate. The yellow globe will remain.
  3. Powers: Matter Transmutation, Changing into elements, Flight, Telepathy, Super-Strength, Speed etc....
  4. Weaknesses: (to be actually explained in the show) Pollution, but not that it suddenly weakens him (like in the cartoon). Instead it will be a gradual weakness ... should he be exposed to high enough amounts to actually hurt the environment. [not a silly hose of sludge]. It would affect him in a way it would affect humans, but only at a faster rate. Therefore it's his job to get rid of his weakness, before it damages him or the Earth.
  5. In short, if he were to be trapped in an active nuclear plant or active pollution generation facility - at the core .... well that would weaken him. Not some pig-faced greedly with a hose or some yellow rock with radiation hands.
  6. Effectively, he will be able to heal from normal amounts of pollution, but its the obsene concentrations that begin to drain his powers.
  7. Yet he has enough will to keep fighting if need be - but for the very short term [signifying the human ability of will power as a temporary boost to overcome any problem].
  8. Strengths & New Strengths: The Earth's weather actually enriches his abilities. Yet he will not be overly dependant on it, as he will be able to travel the milky way on his own power, using the various cosmic radiation and that of the power of suns to travel. (like his version of air traffic control stations). If he has typical survival equipment he can survive in 'healthy' space indefinitely.
  9. His Core self & powers basis: When without his powers, captain planet a direct derivative of evolution and the Earth. Therefore as a normal 'man' he is made up of 'iron-nickel' muscular-cartilage system, is heated up by his blood (containing iron), with the basic air constituents flowing through him (nitrogen, oxygen, etc). His skin is a kind of crystalline earthern composite (direct from the soil). His various other senses are like human senses. - The reason for this would be that he was a direct constitent of the first pure form of life merged together and evolved. A special young being - effectively 'cloned' from Earth itself. In his 'human' self, he is just like any other person - in apperance. But he does not have any powers, apart from being kept alive by the aliveness of the earth's ecosystem. Due to and despite his constituents, Captain Planet is non - magnetic ... that is unless he becomes magnetic as Captain Planet. His body is in balance.
  10. However, when the five elements combine, it sparks an electricity bolt, linked to him (thanks to Gaia), super charging him and teleporting (zapping) him to the middle and enhancing him as captain planet. (think of it like Billy Batson, Captain Marvel transformation).
  11. What he does when he's not called by the rings?: While physically more robust than a typical human (as tough as a solid hardwood tree), he spends his time at ecological sites fighting for a cleaner, greener earth. He is also able to converse with Gaia on the affairs of the planet. He lives in any natural cave or in his own home near volcanic springs. The Geothermal energy recharges him - as much as a warm bath. He has a healing factor and is brimming with the 'chi' (life-force) present in all living things. Doesn't make him super, but gives him a decent healing factor and alllows him to have a miniature version of all 5 elements in him - as his life-support system. He freelances as a professor and researcher of ecology and the environment.
  12. Types of Missions he undertakes: Mostly the planeteers will use their rings and the powers of science and will power (heart) to solve individual problems or small term problems. However, when talking about large population or natural disaster effects (like chain of industries etc....) - defintely more than 1 man or small group can handle - he takes on the case. Occasionally, he also goes undercover in his ringless - guise while his planeteers investigate or take care of other parts of the problem.
  13. Planeteers rings: The rings function as natural conduits to Nature's elements. It's blessed by Gaia to being 'alive' to be able to interact with captain planet's life force. However, in the absence of rings, or when captain planet is online, they also wear clean technological inducers of the power ... to back them up.

right Question. so if you were to give captain planet a refresher, what would your idea be?

The short list?

1: Give the villains actual human personalities and motivations. In the show, they mostly hurt the environment and are ***** because the script says so. In the real world, most disregard for the environment is just that, a disregard, an apathy, not an irrational malice. People hurt the environment because they simply don't care, and are too preocupied with things they think are important but ultimately aren't. So yeah, making the villains real people is a good start.

2: Have the Planeteers actually try and make an impact on the world. Recycling doesn't save the world. Telling kids not to do drugs dosn't save the world. Actually organizing something, going out an doing something, might.

3: Have the kids start to become proficient in the use of their powers to the point where they don't necessarily need Captain Planet anymore. Not at first, but over the course of the story. And don't have him be summoned at the end of every episode at the cost of their powers. That just raises the question of why he's not out and about most of the time because he's obviously better. Have him be their leader or co-mentor with Gaia.

4: Give The Captain an actual goddamn personality.

If you mix Superman and Captain Planet together, you get Super Planetman.

Hmmm funny, I was wondering a few weeks ago why no one ever tried to revamp Captain Planet. He would certainly be more relevant now than he was in the early nineties.

Personally, I don't see the point of creating an amalgam of Superman and Captain Planet. What would be the appeal?

Anyway, if they were going to revamp him and I was in charge, I'd say first order of business is to make him a real person. Not just some entity that is summoned through power rings. I'd want him to be an environmentalist (of course, what else would he be?) who maybe feels that his work isn't creating enough of a difference. He somehow stumbles upon or is chosen by Gaia to become Captain Planet.

The Planeteers would be his students/employees/volunteers. They'd have the rings but they wouldn't be the source of his powers, perhaps they can just increase certain aspects of his powers based on the situation he's in. They shouldn't have to fully rely on each other, the Planeteers should be able to handle themselves for the most part, and Captain Planet should only need their help in extreme situations.

The villains would also need to be real people. Not just creeps and monsters trying to hurt the planet just because they hate the planet. You gotta be pretty crazy to want to hurt the planet. It would have to be big business types who just don't care, but when CP tries to stop what they're doing they become or create villains to stop him from ruining their profits.

Basically the characters are going to need to be fleshed out and made interesting in order to balance out the inevitable cheesyness that would come from an environmentalist super hero. He'd also have to do stuff that would actually help the environment. Not just stop bullies and drugs while teaching kids about recycling.

For all the rest, who gave answers....that's the way forward.
Shocker 9000, its called the 'Secret' - Law of Attraction and 6 degrees of seperation mashed together.

one point of view could be over coming the weakness captain planet has, in leaving the earth. He loses his energy. But supeman doesn't, due to the sun. So he can go interplanetary ... like an Earth ambassador ... other planets (with life) ... as depicted both in CP and Justice League.

My preliminary idea in the amalgam was to leave just kryptonite or extreme planetary sized pollution or being off balance morally (as consequences of the planet or attitudes of the ppulaion (heart power fading of as a weakness.
I mean the planet being destroyed .... would coz the super-captainplanet to feel a little less strong (like if one breathes in contaminated air - kind of gives him a foul mood / red Kryptonite ... but really gradual. he gets more physical, less gentle) for instance. In a way its a tribute to acknowledging the state & balance of mental and emotional wellbeing that is affected by a bad environment. It may look good at first, but it will dawn on people ... that being 'to rough' is not a good idea after all.
Strengths, would be both character's strengths, including controlling the weather & climate.

One thing that I am stilll trying to wrap around .... what could captain planet possibly do when not summoned?
given from one of the episodes ... where he doesn't return earth and heart powers ... he is still a kind of dark charcoal skinned.
with an amalgam, he could at least be playig some role off-duty - like clark kent being a reporter as intel for superman. captain planet being a geologist?

I don't think Captain Planet is capable of being a character within a mature storyline unless you change the whole direction. I think he'd end up having to fight and perhaps even take over whole national governments in order to actually enact the environmental changes needed, but then we'd be getting close to the storyline found in The Authority.

What storyline would you suggest?

I think it would make for a much better story to do away with Captain Planet and have the Planeteers deal with everything. Or maybe have it so that Captain Planet is some stop gap force that can only be called on very rarely.

I don't think he'd need to take over the government, but certainly act in opposition to it.jj

Certainly you'd have to acknowledge that most major polluters are acting with either the open or tacit support of their countries' governments.

Its interesting when you talk about tackling governments. It really begins to bring in a more sensible storyline - both in terms of its original idea ... an eco-hero ... and the maturity and undertones of the concept of global warming.

I get the sense that this captain planet would be one for not little kids, but one for teenageers and adults ... much like superman is for all of us.

What would this guys abilities be like? still dependent on the ring?

I think that they would need captain planet to play 2 roles. A stick and carrot approach:
1) A subtle role as an freelance geo-scientist exposing the dangers of polution or crime the likes on the global economy ... to the people ... through the government.
2) A Hero role as Captain Planet ... resolving the big picture immediate action problem on a large enough scale. (mostly on a large transnational chain reaction). Planeteers will be with the people ... Caps will be with the problem - the symbol of hope.

I mean let the show take on an uneven balance tone ... in terms of
1) explaining the difficulty of keeping the balance in normal terms - the way it is in real life. Now with this ... it will the fault of the situation - not any one person or system .... and as a result change cannot be abrupt. example ... a background behind corruption or producing greenhouse gases .... in terms of what starts out positivee ... leads to a negative ...when social needs and human emotions contribute to it. as well as the difficulty in using solar power ... where its direct flipside can lead to a negative usage. basically eplaining the same tool depends on its use to be good or bad ... but tha decision is based on human needs.

As a result of his explorations and the planeteers missions (often justice league style) when effects have a major transnational impact, captain 'civilian' will deal with convincing authorities Batman style (using tact and diplomacy. investigation, evidence, instead of force - the hero on the edge - trying for a solution). He will deal with the big bosses, internatioanl powerhouses, indutries, He will be Macro.

Planeteers will be amassing the population masses to practice good habits, or to solve the problems ... like a counsellor or consultant, overcoming local red tape or any other usual stoping point. They have a limit ... and so does the local population. They will be at the local level.

This part will give the difficulty in implementing and balancing. It like ... don;t kill wildlife or trees ... yet we need to kill and eat them to surivive and for resources .... its not just deforestation but why its done ... yet what is the danger, yet what is the problem in solving that danger in terms of demand / supply.

This kind of mixed storyline ... will be both educational, without an obvious direct solution to the problem , because of its international size. it will also present the problem as a global issue looming ... yet not overly scare any kids watchin it ... while giving adults a good message.

2) As a result of his explorations and the planeteers missions (often justice league style) when effects have a major transnational impact, and it goes beyond what a small population of human being team can handle ... that is when the rings energise him as Captain Planet to take on these challenges ... as an 'adrenaline force' and stem much of it.

Also citing both an immediate solution, the how could have had one 'show effects' before a 'planeteer alert'
a) 'show effects' will deal with the result of the show ... 1] the immediate solution to the problem 2] the bigger picture and immediate benefit to the environment 3] the practical grouses of those affected (the adversaries).
-- This goes to show that while it is possible to sove a problem there are both consequences and negative effects ... and that it is a never ending battle.

b) 'Planeteer Alert': previously it was just some preaching. This new version could give a visionary account of the long-term effects of the resolved problem. 1] How the individual people are benefitting, 2] How the big people are benefitting 3] the difficulties in managing these new fture processes 4] the net benefit to the environment.
