I would just be ecstatic if Rockstar made a Spidey game. They know how to make fantastic open world sandbox games.
Just because they can make a good batman game doesn't mean they can make a good spider-man game.
True. Manhattan was better in SM2 and SM3 than in this. Why they can't make even the Empire State Building resemble what it really is. It is really important because this is open world game set in NY. You can't even see the antenna if you are not really close.Spider-Man 2 was Treyarch's first time making an open world Spider-Man game and their Manhattan was 10 times better than this Manhattan. (My biggest complaint with this game.) Theirs was bigger, more realistic, and easily recognizable as Manhattan. This one? Not so much.
This Manhattan is awful. I work in Manhattan and it is barely recognizable to me. It's no where near as easy to navigate by landmarks and recognizable buildings as the previous games and the city seems, all together, dead. There are no cars, no people, nothing. This game is pretty awful -- I am tremendously disappointed in it.
The camera should be pulled back as well. It's a cross between 1st and 3rd person and it stinks. You can't navigate nearly as easily while swinging in games past because you can't see ANYTHING because you only see Spidey's back and what is immediately in front of you. It's awful.
I wanted to love this game -- I looked forward to it and was anxious.
The story has let me down -- It wasn't even bad -- just poorly utilized in the execution. "Web Of Shadows" did a better "quarantine New York" story line and we actually saw the affect on the people and the city outside of that stupid "twitter" feed. The voice acting is pretty brutal, too. All around this game is a missed opportunity -- give someone else the license.

The city is very important in open world game. There is no life in it.Ok, now some people are hating on the game just for the sake of hating
I just really hope we get a 616 game with this games formula. I want them to work with the comic lore again and give us bosses with actual personalities. Not just a bunch of gnarling, grotesque monsters. As much as I enjoy this game, I had way more fun with the bosses in Shattered Dimensions.
Ok, there's a Cowboy too and a school bully. Thing is, all the things that make Rockstar games fun, probably wouldn't have a place in a Spider-Man game. Not to mention that Rockstar games aren't exactly known for their smooth controls.
That's Rocksteady.
But saying there are no cars and no people is a gross exaggeration. Especially when I'm sitting at a perch point and see tons of what apparently isn't in the game. I agree that there's room for a lot of improvement though. Ideally, I'd like the streets to look as alive as in the upcoming Sleeping Dogs and Hitman: Absolution. Hitman has just a crazy amount of people, all doing their thing.
I certainly wouldn't argue that it wouldn't improve the city if it were more "lively". But i think it may be a question of what is possible while maintaining image/texture quality, frame frates, animations, etc.The city is very important in open world game. There is no life in it.
Just because they can make a good batman game doesn't mean they can make a good spider-man game. And Arkham city free roam was a lot smaller than manhattan in TASM. Beenox love spider-man, they're passionate about him and it's obvious. They really have the passion and I'd like for them to stick with making spider-man games. And I'm sure they'll take all the criticism from this game and make TASM 2 even better.
But not this generation.

.
Rockstar has already done that with GTA. Those cities are alive.I certainly wouldn't argue that it wouldn't improve the city if it were more "lively". But i think it may be a question of what is possible while maintaining image/texture quality, frame frates, animations, etc.
Ignoring limitations, I think it'd be really nice to have people poking their heads out of windows and cheering you on to swing by a building and see a get together of friends/rooftop dining. To walk down the street and see a garbage truck emptying a dumpster, to swing by Times Square and see a sea of people trying to get their faces on camera during filming of a news/tv show.
But again, there are major limitations to what can be done. I think people grossly underestimate the time, energy, man hours, and processing power needed to get a truly GREAT Manhattan in a Spidey game without having to sacrifice anything. In a few years when, hopefully. But not this generation.

The city seems dead.
And the disorienting camera is not "hating for the sake of hating" it's a real issue.
The web swinging mechanic is AWFUL. The webs don't even TRY to look like they stick to buildings, and half of the time you are flying through open space while web swinging.
They took the BEST part about the past games and made it the worst part of this game. You swing and arc way up, then float and fly and then swing again. You are too high above the buildings most of the time, and it is just not as good as best efforts on less impressive systems.
With the PS3 and all the time since the last Open World Spidey game, I expected better.
And saying the voice acting is shoddy, again, isn't a "hate just to hate" gripe. It is shoddy. There are moments when it's good, but moments when it is absolutely awful.
There is no consistency in this game -- other than the repetitive game play.
