Join the Marines!

A U.S. Marine from San Jose has been granted "conscientious objector" status by a federal court. The marine asked to be released from his duties because he has a moral objection to killing.

So this guy joined the Marines...why???? Man......and then they actually granted this punk the "status". Wow....

He was probably willing to kill and die to defend his county but not for oil.

Go figure.

Yeah he probably shouldn't have joined the marines if he was unwilling to kill someone.

Alot of factors go into deciding oil prices.

Do you really think we're in Iraq because we care about Iraqi people? It's just a coincidence they have the second largest oil reserve on the planet.

They don't really emphasize the killing machine aspect in Marine recruitment advertisements. They show people climbing mountains. It's reasonable for someone who doesn't watch much tv or was home schooled to be shocked when they get to marine boot camp and every other word is kill.

I had no idea Marines were that conditioned to be killing machines until I saw Full Metal Jacket.

Let's not turn this into a debate about the validity of the Iraq War. We all have our own opinions about it and it's getting rather pointless now these days to debate about it.

All I have to say in this issue is that the guy should not have joined the Marines in the first place. Plain and simple. The military is not a place for opinions. They give you orders and you follow them. Simple as that. That's how it works.

No it's not that simple.

If you're ordered to bomb a hospital and you know there are women and children there you have a duty to not shame the flag by commiting a war crime.

The Iraq War and bombing a hospital are two completely different things.

1. Iraq is a nation that had a regime that was unfriendly to the United States and was percieved as a threat. They've been perceived as a threat since the first Bush Administration.

2. A hospital is a building where the sick and injured try to feel better.

You're blowing this out of proportion and as I said, these days it's rather pointless to debate it. Most people are opposed to the war. Most people have come to their own conclusions about it, especially after seeing failure after failure, and those few that still support the war are probably too damn thickheaded to change their minds on the issue.

In conclusion, this guy should not have joined the Marines in the first place. You sign up, you should expect a war to come sooner or later, even if it is an unjustified one.

The military's job is to fight wars. This involves killing people. Even if you're a REMF your job still ends up with the death of others. I'm sorry but that's the point. Now how can you join any service group if you have a moral objection to killing? This guy is full of crap. He was probably worst in his class was terrified of Iraq and is basically taking an easy out because he's a six year old school girl with pigtails and pretty pink berrets on the inside.

Does anyone honestly believe he didn't realize the marines killed people when he signed up?

And the point of desensatizing people to killing and death is to keep our people alive. You get to make a choice in war time situations. The first is to not hesitate and possibly live. The second is to think about the situation and certianly die. Marines are front line soldiers, not moralists or philosphers and thank God for that. What the moron is missing is that all that desensatization was intended to make him into a soldier and fighter.

What the hell do people think the marines do anyway?

And he was not DRAFTED!!!!!!!!!!! HE VOLUNTEERED!!

Oh wait....I know. He wanted the free education and the pay check. As long as Uncle Sam kept up his end of the bargain, he was cool wit' dat.:yay: But when Sam told him to ante up......"I'm a concientious objector"!

What's wrong with him leaving? He didn't want to be there, he wasn't doing himself or anyone else any good, and everyone's better off now that he's gone. Whoop-de-Goddamn-doo.

Exactly.

I was all for invading Afghanistan - but the week after Sept.11, 2001 when the Taliban thumbed their noses at us and gave Bin Laden safe harbor - NOT weeks later.

Iraq - Not so much. And now we know we were probably misled if not outright lied to. A sad situation.

But Iran - The sooner the better. Been waitin' to hand those turds their asses for 30 years. Wish I was 20 years younger so I could sign up.

However it's very true that the military advertises in a misleading fashion. SURE kids want it for the education. That's what most of the ads aimed at them emphasize.
Kid feels he can't kill? Let 'im out.
That's what conscientous objector status is for.

Because this type of thing takes a group with a proud tradition and paints a big target on their backs. It's not that he isn't there anymore (doesn't sound like he'd do any good) but that most objectors get to go because they were forced not because they were stupid. This gives a lot of people who've never been in the service or have any idea what it is to fight a great punchline at their cocktail parties and it pisses some people off.
