An......interesting service, to say the least

They're being told that their money is going to God. You shouldn't take advantage of someone who wants to find, please, and know God by taking their money, right? Even if you use it to build a church the reason that they GAVE it to you was because you told them that God wanted them to fork it over.
But the money is going to God. Its helping to build the church and help those in the congregation who have fallen on hard times (if it is a good church). So what's the problem with that? It isn't a scam or deception.

And yes, I put off going to bed just so that I could type this reply. :p

No, they're not. I've never been told that the money is going anywhere but to the church itself, nor that it is required for me to pay to allow me to "find, please, and know God". And if they use it to build the church, they'd let the people know that that's what they're using it for and thank you.

It's nice to see moviefan's been busy since he left.

Seriously though, the issue is that the money isn't going to God it's going to the Church which is at best an avatar of God or a tool of God's power. It's not actually going to God it's going to build the new church gym.

In addition all kinds of religions throughout history have sold forgiveness for money. This is just plain wrong isn't it?

Well look at it this way: People who give their money to the church BELIEVE that it goes to God. They believe that God has ordained a gym to be built so they give their money to God and they believe that it's going to God.

More power to those people. They feel good. Feeling good is good. They feel good about themselves and their faith and hell they might even get a sweet new gym out of the deal.

Any person that would pay 110 smackers for "peace of mind" that their pet will be taken care of after the rapture is doing just that. They're not paying for their pets to be taken care of they're paying for their "peace of mind". $110 is small change for peace of mind and if the only thing that keeps you up at night is the fear that the rapture will happen and Mr. Snuggles won't have a home... Pay the $110 and rest easy.

Churches act according to the will or plan of their God, perhaps it is clear that it's going to the church but since they believe that God is in control of the church they believe that God's Will will be done concerning money.

In any case, my point wasn't clear, I don't think that tithing is a sham at all. I don't think it's wrong. I think people give money to churches because they believe it is their right and responsibilty to do so. It's no different than giving money to a charity because it makes you feel like you've done your part.

I'm totally for giving money to churches if it suits you. I love religious people and Christians and Jews... There should be no problem. If you want to pay to have someone look after your pet when you get raptured then... that's cool too. It's your money and if you think it is a wise decision go ahead... Caveat emptor an all that...

*The church is referred to as the symbolic body of Christ. What is wrong with something that has a spiritual and symbolic meaning?

*Of course there were people who would sell forgiveness! Just like there were people who would sell fake "relics", claiming that they had special healing powers. The churches that are true in the belief of God to not practice these things.

*It isn't necessarily true that they believe God has ordained everything. They donate the money for the bigger church facilities, for example, so that it makes it easier to worship and can attract those who do not. That is also a way of spreading salvation, is it not? In good churches, it is never about the money per se.

*Sure giving makes you feel good. That's the case when you give to any cause/group that you believe in, isn't it? But that feeling that one gets when giving to something does not validate one taking advantage of it. This is a blatant grab for money with no other purpose at all than to get money.

I disagree with your other arguments on the grounds that you are a jerk. :o

The point is that we cannot verify whether or not God exists or whether or not it is a good cause so some people would consider all religions to take advantage of people that are seeking something greater and gaining that through a religion.

So what is the harm is telling someone a complete lie and taking them for 110 bucks if it makes them feel better?

Also, I concede all arguments on the grounds that I don't want our kids to find out that we used to fight.

We may not have concrete proof that God exists, but that also means that it is merely another opinion when one says that he does not.

The evil in it is duping people who believe in something when you yourself do not.

:hehe: You are weird! I don't even know what to say to that!

I've rendered you speechless. :) Tell your friends.

The sexual tension is great.

Fix'd

I think you'll make Walrus a liiittle too happy saying that. :o

No such thing as too happy.

I've gotta help Walrus. He's not a sleek, sexy weasel, like myself. He's a bloated, mostly hairless pinniped with awful teeth. He needs the help.

You know a Walrus is the only living mammal that can be wider than it is long.

You do the math. Little ferret. Big Walrus.
