Flagstaff's snowy season
11 feet has fallen; more likely
With a high in the Valley expected to reach 72 degrees today, it seems almost impossible that Flagstaff, a mere two hours up the road, is on the way to one of its snowiest seasons ever.
So far this year, more than 11 feet of snow has fallen. With a total of 138.2 inches, this season is already Flagstaff's 11th snowiest on record, according to the National Weather Service.
And because March is annually the snowiest month, a top-five finish is a real possibility.
The most likely reason for the heavy snowfall is El Niño - warmer than normal sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific that can steer wetter storms to Arizona.
With more snow than Anchorage, Alaska, and Buffalo, N.Y., combined, people up north are beginning to think of spring.
"I'm ready for it to be over," the Weather Service's David Blanchard said of the snow. "We're all getting a little tired of shoveling."
