Well, it could also very well be the case that Iron Man DOES become the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. But, considering how I think the events of Civil War are going to make Tony Stark a "political embarassment" I'm not sure promoting him to replace Maria Hill would be an ideal situation. Still, you never know.

And for some reason, I can't help think of Zardoz when I see this image (maybe because it looks like the poster from some sci-fi movie from the 70s) Or maybe because Tony Stark bears a passing resemblance to Sean Connery.

Oh big uproar. Tony Stark would be a great director of SHIELD. Lots of shared character traits between him and Fury, and Tony's smarter. He's a leader and he'd break the rules a little to get whatever needs to be done, done.

That's definitely an odd turn of events. I'm rather indifferent on the subject but it all depends on how things go in the story. Right now most people are split on Civil War, seems like people are split on this as well.
