Anderson, Hoffman Reteaming on Master

Saw the film tonight. Had to drive to Gettysburg PA to a independent theater but so worth it. My initial rating would be something like 9.3/10

I am going to write a full review and post on my blog tomorrow but this was an excellent piece of work by Anderson, Phoenix, Hoffman and Adams most notably. Wow. Oscar caliber stuff for certain. Glad I wasn't disappointed. One of my year's most anticipated for a long while

We'll see how it does. I know most awards will grant Lewis an A for effort and dedication alone regarding the portrayal, but the entire movie itself is the question.

LINCOLN looks terrifically bland.

Spielberg's really starting to lose his touch.

So, was this movie about how Freddie will never be able to find a relationship with a woman as interesting and rewarding as the one he had with the Master?
I liked it, but like many viewers, I'm not sure what to make of the film's purpose or intention.

so this, pretty much the epitome of story and character development is the gem that many here(and abroad) think all films need to aspire to. Pretty much the point of watching films for many.

I can't subscribe to this picture in particular. Watching good story telling vs being told a good story is the argument and this film was subtle for subtle's sake at most turns. Boogie nights is what I'd point to for a more tangible plotty, plot. This just seemed to rely on it's interesting performances and promise of some sort of pay off around the corner never to come.

Tom Hooper's got it in the bag this year.

Great movie. I don't know if its PTA's best due to its unevenness and length but its a winner.

Just got back from it.

I'm kind of on the rail. I don't think it was a bad movie, but I'm not sure if I can recommend it. Phoenix and Hoffman give brilliant performances, but the conflict of the movie is so subtle and downplayed that I didnt find the movie that compelling. Had the been cut down by about twenty minutes, I think it would have been just as effective.

Just saw it.

It's the most subtle PTA film in terms of the directing style, but there's so much going on underneath. I definitely need to see it again. And then again after that.

I'm waiting for more intelligent minds to break everything down, but I feel that PTA was trying to show the leaps and bounds people allow in order to make it through this life. What we accept as true, who we surround ourselves with, etc. There's a lot of ******** on earth, and most people don't care as long as they themselves are accepted. Freddie wanted love and acceptance. Did he get it? Who knows.

Joaquin Phoenix.... just throw the man all the awards. At every single moment his character is on screen, he manages to be hilarious, terrifying, heartbreaking, bizarre and about fifty other things.

PTA is god. Also, pig ****.

Yeah, Phoenix deserves an Oscar nom for sure.

Amy Adams was good too, but boy, she looked rough in this movie though she's usually very beautiful. I don't know if it's done on purpose or not.

Seeing that she looks lovely in Trouble With the Curve, I'd say on purpose.

That's what my friend said, then I realized that Amy was playing an older character.

Yeah, she plays an older character in the context of The Master.
But you need to see the film, Gianakin. Phoenix is a-a-a-amazing.

Not here yet. Did you like TWBB? I assume you loved it.

There Will Be Blood was damn good and personally it's a wee bit better than The Master due to DDL and it's tighter plotting. My heart belongs to Magnolia and I think Punch Drunk Love is his most under-rated.

Are American movies dubbed in Greece, or subtitled?

Thankfully, the latter.

So wait, the Master's plotting is looser than TWBB's? Oy vey...

I think the movie..meanders somewhat for the first half. I wish it was a bit tighter but then again, Joaquin carried it all. It was all done for the development for his unhinged character.

Bravo to Joaquin and his hairlip!

Given that I hate TWBB (but love PDL and BN), would you say I'd enjoy The Master?

Someone can hate "There Will be Blood"? Easily my favorite Anderson film. What did you dislike so much about it?

Tsk tsk tsk. Me likey THere Will Be Blood.

Anyway, to answer your question, it's hard to say. I'm still digesting the film, even a day later. I agree with some here that there are layers of stuff that I probably missed the first time round.

But I would say it's kinda closer to TWBB in tone than the other PTA films, however.

Not TF levels of hate, but yeah, I can't stand it.

Dangit. Well, perhaps its supposed abstractness will differentiate it enough for me to enjoy.

Gianakin is breaking my black heart - first Drive, then now There Will Be Blood? It makes me the Star Wars prequels even more!! :p
