Sci-Fi 'Animorphs' movie in development

The ones a few pages back the EPUBs.

I had heard the books have an anti-war vibe and touch on xenophobia and racism Is that not true?
Yeah it goes into that a bit. I look at Animorphs as a deconstruction of the teenage protagonist monomyth adventure fantasy story where you really get an insight of what would really happen in a scenario like that with war being not so pretty.

That’s a pretty accurate way of describing it. I always thought that the major issue with adapting these books is going to be that the basic premise sounds more action-oriented and child-friendly than the actual stories. The studio probably doesn’t want to get into the more serious/scary elements and turn it into a more straightforward, broadly appealing adventure story.

Like their transformations were so gruesome. They were always scared for their lives and scared of being captured and tortured. Even with the action, the vibe was usually like “they’re fighting for their lives and they could actually get seriously hurt or even die”. And they all suffered some serious consequences. Without all that, it would very much be another Percy Jackson situation.

How did I miss something so bad ass sounding? No studio will release that in theatres probably.

Seems like we're just getting an adaptation of the Nickelodeon TV show that starred Shawn Ashmore which essentially didn't do justice to those books and became the very thing the books aimed to deconstruct. I'm also gonna bet that Tobias won't last long as a perma-Hawk nothlit.

Also follow up tweets from Michael Grant.

Um just based on the stuff that smallville fan and #root said about the books, the ideas present, and his age, I think I have the perfect director for Animorphs.

Ryan Coogler, 34.

You want to go easier to get, but possibly has the right stuff for this then maybe Josh Trank, 36. Both in the age range of the original readship, and both (Especially Coogler) seem like good fits.

I went to a book event near where I work where KA Applegate was promoting her new book “Pocket Bear” at the local library last night. She mentioned in the signing line that she heard rumors that Disney had the rights to Animorphs but she couldn’t verify it.

She was super sweet and signed several Animorphs items I brought. (I also bought a copy of “Pocket Bear” as a courtesy.)

Man you had me running in here so FAST!

Glad that you had a good encounter with Applegate.

Nice you got to meet her.

A bit surprising (like anyone else) she's just going on rumors? Though I imagine at some point the licensors and studious exert so much control, as a creator you might need to remove yourself from the equation, or caring to much what they do, just to stay sane.

If it is true it's been licensed? by Disney Movie? or Disney TV? I think it works better for a TV series. They might be looking for something YA to compete with HBOs Potter reboot and Netflix Stranger Things popularity; Kids hero focus, suburban world pulled into a more sci-fantasy spin.
I almost wish Disney would invest that strongly in it.

She didn’t say whether it would be a streaming series or hopeful film franchise. From the way she talked about the TV show, Scholastic did her and Michael dirty (and they didn’t contractually have the control JKR or Suzanne Collins have over their series). She said the producers were originally going to whitewash Cassie until they raised hell about it.

Disney has their counter to Harry Potter, Percy Jackson. It would fit with some of the push Disney is going for with Disney+, along with Power Rangers.

No doubt the 90s parallels; teens with attitude, it's up to us to save everyone angst. And lest we forget the MMPR Pilot with the original Trinidad, and the super advanced 90s morphing CG effect.:shock
Which PR abandoned, but Animorphs were like we are totally doing that! :oldrazz:

Aw I’ve heard she’s nice. She could teach another fantasy author a lesson I reckon

Even if JKR wasn’t problematic, the library I went to would be too small for a similar event for her because of HP’s immense popularity (and require an RSVP to get in).

90% of the attendees at the book event were families who obviously love Applegate’s more recent books like “The One and Only Ivan”, “Odder”, “Wishtree” and “Willodeen.” I did not see any Everworld fans there though.

I had her sign my worn copy of Megamorphs #4 and two Etsy prints of David Mattingly’s covers for The Solution and The Ultimate.
