Annihilation

I never read the Drax mini because I heard bad reviews... but I just read it and I kinda liked it. The ending was a little anti-climactic, but the story overall was fairly interesting. Now I know why Drax has some annoying girl at his side in Nova.

Synopsis, please?:D

Oh, okay, coolios.

They better keep Quasar alive though. It'd be really needless to kill him off.

I'll be super pissed if they kill Quasar. I am one of those guys who loves him and has every one of his appearances.

I get so sick of Marvel killing characters just for shock value. If they do that with Quasar, I'll drop the whole Annihilation event.

You have every one of his appearances!? Wow, I wish I did. I certainly loved his ongoing series.

Synopsis, please?:D

Drax is on a prisoner space transport when it crashes to earth near a small nothing town. Drax is one of four survivors, including the Blood Brothers, Lunatik, and Paibok the Skrull. The aliens (except Drax) enslave the small town to help try and rebuild the fallen transport so that they may escape, each of the aliens playing a unique role (Lunatik the crazy blood thirsty one, Paibok being the intellegent thinking one, and the Blood Brothers proving to be rash and slightly comical). Drax meets the smarallic girl, Cammy (which is actually very likable), and from there he eventually comes to the town's defense. The story also shows his change from big dumb galoot, to smaller intelligent Destroyer. It's not the greatest story told, but I was entertained... and it actually leads into the Annihilation Prologue quite well. The art takes some getting use to, but it's not horrible. Same with the alien speach of Lunatik and the Blood Brothers. It's odd, but once you get the hang of it it's fine.

Thanks, JH! What I got from Wiki was really brief and wanted a little more "meat" to the story. Is his physical shift as simple as what I read? That he appeared dead and when he revived he had changed?

Pretty much. I think Paibok said something about Drax drinking some starship fuel and that may have contributed.

The gist of his transformation was that he had never actually finished his original metamorhosis, and that this was the final stage, which was prompted by the accident and dying.

Thanks, DBM. Excuse me, my jaw isn't working quite right, it's falling open on it's own after that.

Understandable. I didn't buy Drax when it was coming out because I also had read bad reviews. But when he showed up in Annihilation I decided to go ahead and pick up the TPB, and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the series.

And his change actually makes some sense. He was revived from the dead to become Drax to begin with, so it's not unreasonable that when he died, he would come back again and different.

Oh, I love Giffen's writing, serious or funny, and I probably would've picked this up but never saw it at the shop I used to go to. It's just that it kinda sounds like Giffen putting some of his funny stuff on a serious subject.:) He's been pretty cool in Nova, if Giffen is orchestrating all of this to make them kinda like a Marvel L.E.G.I.O.N. he looks to be a more cerebral Lobo. I just hope he doesn't fall into the Wolverine-clone thing.

I tried the first issue of Drax and disliked it alot

The first issue was okay, but it grew on me as I went. I got the comics online, but I plan on eventually buying the actual trade.

Annihilation is amazing me every time I pick up a new issue

this should have been actually pushed by marvel!

Civil War doesn't really seem to be all that much when I compare it to Annihilation

I just picked up and read Nova's two issues and enjoyed them a lot.

I had told myself I would just pick up Silver Surfer... but the are dragging me in...

Silver Surfer #3 was EXTREMELY good and this from a non-fan. A couple new revelations that will definitely up the stakes in the Annhilation event.
Oh, yeah! Even the big G-Man might not be safe in this one!
I didn't quite understand what power up Galactus gave the Surfer at the end nor what the Earth woman thing was about, though.

yeah, I told myself I'd just pick up the first issues of SS and Nova, fully anticipating them to only be "meh" and I wouldn't continue with them.... and now I'm considering catching up with Ronan and SuperSkrull

I've been Loving Nova's part so far. Especially Drax. Drax has been freaking great.
Also Super skrull's pretty cool so far (though I dont like the art much)

Basically the only part of Annihilation I dont like is Ronan.

from what I understand this incarnation of Drax is closer to his earlier appearences, but I miss the old lughead he was for the past 15 years or so

Agreed. I first fell in love with Drax when he was basically just Space-Hulk (in hindsight i think it was cause of the cape) but I'm still liking the current incarnation a lot.

did you ever read Peter David's Captain Marvel series? There were so many good Drax scenes in that book

nah. I've never read any of Captain Marvel's stuff. I basically only know Drax from the Infinity watch stuff and his mini.

I just like the idea of a ****** with ludicrous strength.
Especially if he's wearing a cape.

heh, I wish I had scans of the scene where the Psycho-Man was trying to manipulate Drax's emotions to get him to help him with something, and Drax near destroys his ship to show you :D

I think Drax is great how he is, but I do also miss the dumb version. I've read very few comics with his older version, basically a few old issues of Captain Marvel from the Life and Death of Captain Marvel tpb. I like serious characters, but I keep thinking about one of the few dumb drax stories I"ve read and it makes me smile, and I kinda want that too. Too bad we can't have it both ways.

OK, I have all the books from this series, I am going to read them this weekend. Everyone keeps saying how good they are & I really like Marvels space characters.

Civil war is the best "event" that either company has had in a long time.

Yeah, Civil War is blowing me away right now. Annihilation isn't bad either though. I'd say Marvel is doing a great job at the moment, and that's not something that's said often.
