Another hit for Mel Gibson!

Right now the W.O.M. from critics anyhow is just so-so

As for kids, kids can't get into it. Its R-Rated, and their parents won't take them like they did The Passion as it doesn't have the Jesus thing going for it.

When I said kids I actually meant high school students. Many of them will be able to get in...especially seniors. Secondly, critical respond may be "whatever" but audiences and critics think differently many times.

Also, like I said before...I'm sure this movie will be a big moneymaker in the foreign market. I can see this film being HUGE in Latin America.

Eragon and Charlottes Web will pcik up the box office next weekend and through the christmas weekend. Face it Eragon picked a better opening slot. Apocolypto and Blood Diamond just canceld each other out.

You really think High School kids will have the tolerance for subtitles? Again, it doesn't have Jesus to fall back on. Besides, last I checked high school kids still get weekends off, why would they wait?

Its possible. However, Mel Gibson is taking a lot of backlash on an international level because of his comments. Perhaps moreso than in America. Besides, it costs a lot more to distribute movies on a foreign level than it does domestic, so it doesn't usually make as much profit.

At anyrate, its a success for Gibson, it'll make it a profit, but to call it a hit is ridiculous.

The reviews are mostly positive (not that it necessarily matters anyway, plenty of criticially bashed movies make a ****load of money), and it's really too early to deem it a hit or otherwise right now.

It depends on the city. I live in Miami which is mostly populated by hispanics and theater was packed last night and the audience loved the movie. Plus, I don't know if you've seen the film or not, but the death scenes in this movie are classic Gibson. Word of mouth will spread and kids will go see it just for the death scenes.

The backlash has been exaggerated by the media. Like I said, I live in an hispanic populated city and the audience at my theater last night loved the film. They loved it more than me. I thought the movie was good. Personally I felt Braveheart and Passion were better but the movie was still good. But, the audience I was with loved it. So, I'm sure in Latin America the movie will be huge.

Only time will tell.

We're talking domestically, right?

Critic response has been so-so. It is incredibly violent and it doesn't have the Jesus appeal (hell, The Passion had little kids taken to it despite the violence because it was Jesus...this movie doesn't have that). It is spoken in a foreign language with subtitles, and again, doesn't have religion to fall back on. It is looking to make 15 million opening weekend (that is a generous estimate too) and with Eragon and Pursuit of Happyness next week, the standard 50-55 % drop could be more like 60-65 %, furthermore, with Rocky Balboa and Night at the Museum the following weekend, it doesn't really have room to stretch its legs.

Internationally it may due better, although there is quite a bit of backlash towards Mel Gibson right now, so who knows.

This pretty much sums it up.

plenty of movies can open at number 1. But it doesnt make em a hit yet. Remember the Covenant? yeah...
I just can't believe it beat out Blood Diamond.

both credable detroit critics gave it better ratings than blood diamond

Umm, its 65 % vs 59 %. Neither got stellar reviews and there really isn't that big of a margain between them as your post implies.

Either way I took my chances with Apocalypto. And, it was a good decision. I liked the movie. It was really good.

Terry Lawson detroit free press 4 stars, Blood diamond 3 stars

the guy from the Detroit News, dont rem, ember his name, B, he gave Blood Diamond a B-

I'll probably check out Blood Diamond when it arrives on DVD a month from now ;)

I just saw Blood Diamond; pretty good, but this blows it completely out of the water.
To Blood Diamond's credit, it is much better than the typical Oscar bait trash that Hollywood ****s out of every year(not that it says much).
As for the amount of screens, BD had a lower per screen average than A.

If Jennifer Connelly is naked then maybe I'll see it. ;)

why? Its a good movie. Not as good as Braveheart and Passion but still good. Mel Gibson is a pretty good director.

^^^

Yeah i know, but it still have nothing what would get me excited.

does it actully have sub titles, i've read a few reviews in magazines saying it lacks them

Face it the box office juggernauts for december if there was ever going to be any were going to be Eragon, or Rocky Balboa. I'm not saying they are better films it just my figurin was those were going to be the stand outs unless Charlottes Web and Night At The Museum surprises us.
