I've always wondered what it was about Magneto and his x-men that led to the escalation of Apocalypse gaining power in the Age of Apocalypse.

Surely he could have been doing that much different things and agenda than Xavier was doing at the time, nor is his band of x-men theoretically that much weaker than incarnations in the proper world.

If anything he seemed a little bit more dedicated to making sure they all got sufficient danger room training and he really seemed to work them quite hard.

so i ask, how did he **** up so badly?

My guess is it simply took him longer to form the X-Men than it did Xavier. Xavier was ready to do it for a bit, even tho Magneto formed it for Xavier, it doesn't mean Magneto did it around the same time, might have been a decade or two later and only when Apoc was getting in power. Atleast that's my guess, but he probably formed his version of the X-Men in defense to an Apoc alrdy on the rise of power. Plus without the origional X-Men doing what they did Jean and Scott never got together to produce a time jumping Cable which I think helped a bit (X-Man didn't really get in the fight til X-Men Omega the last book of AoA), not counting Xavier himself is pretty powerful and could have sensed Apoc so he could set up defenses, or read his horsemens minds or something.

Plus, Apoc saw Legion's power burst and overreacted to the situation, thinking that mutants had attained a huge step in evolution. So, he basically steamrolled the world earlier than he normally would have, so mutants were very unprepared for the assault.
