I'm wandering about the Hype the other day when I come across a poster (I forget who) with an avatar that features the movie Grindhouse in it. And I say to myself, "Hmm, that looks interesting. I might just go see that." Then it hits me, are we all just one giant free advertisement? While some posters here on the Hype have pretty original avatars, the majority have avatars with images of upcoming movies, music, and comic books. Even favorite celebrities. I ask you all, why do we do this? Is this secretly a way for the media to get free advertising across a wide range of people? Or is it just our way of expressing ourselves? Are we getting paid for this??

You're right. I'm just an advertisement for the movie "Hound Dog".

I have no idea what you're talking about. :cmad:

yep, we are providing a free form of advertising another person's product.

more often than not though, these products are going to be already viewed by us no matter what...

there's only been one instance when i've personally gone out and bought a film based entirely on a 2 second avatar (but it was more like i saw the film and decided to see what the fuss was about since the avatar was rocking)

everyone is an advertising resource through word of mouth anyway we just happen to do it online. I have my avatar just because the man is hot but i guess it does advertise the new series of his show, it would depend if people recognise it i guess

In my case, not at all.

I am agree with the jag... even more so after I change my avvy :csad:

IF a member of the hype was a known celebrity, do you think big companies would end up paying them to use their avatar and signature space for advertising?

That is an interesting thought. Most likely, I would say. It's like any celebrity award show. Their bodies become billboards for designers.

well the equivalent of this on here would be perhaps posters that happen to post fairly often...

one could quite easily target posters with high post counts as means of advertising their products because they know they are bound to spend a lot of time on the site, hopefullly on various different boards etc...

That's kinda scary.

Also, I just noticed.. we also advertise popular internet gifs/images or even youtube vids. In return they're getting more and more hits.

I don't think that many folk go to see the movies, read the books or buy the items that I recommend. However, I do seem to have become the Toronto tourism industries best friend... so, who knows, maybe we are.

Yeah, I realize now that it was you! How dare you.

I want to see "Grindhouse," it is my most anticipated movie besides Spider-Man 3 at the moment. Therefore, I wanted a "Grindhouse" avatar. :)

me, noir, lv,speedball rules and spideylad talk about doctor who a lot but i don't know if anyone will see the new series on the BBC or sci fi and say 'hey thats what they are talking about' and keep watching. If anything it might keep them away:p

I just find it amazing how the simple flashing of the title has generated much interest in me. It's astounding.

I walk down the street wearing my Pepsi shirt and screaming, "EAT FRESH!" as loud as I can.

Nope not me, you would be hard pushed to see what mines from

Ummmm....yeah....you know my name has nothing to do with the TV show. At all. Right?

jag
It doesn't have to :)

Makes me wonder though why it's only just occured to me that it could also be a car reference....perhaps i'm just more aeronautically minded....
