I think it's ******ed that after 20 years of waiting for a reboot of Superman, which has needed a reboot for a looooong ass time, Spider-Man is getting rebooted when the franchise is only 8 years old. When Batman Begins came out, there was a whole generation of kids who grew up without seeing a Batman movie. Batman and Robin was so awful, what 21st century parent in their right mind would have given it to their kids? The audience was ripe for a new Batman film, and rebooting was their only hope of escaping the tainted legacy of Batman and Robin. The franchise needed a reboot, the audience was ready for a reboot, so a reboot is what it got.
Not so with Spider-Man. There are still LOTS of kids who are still crazy about Raimi's films. They can't count on a bunch of uninitiated kids picking up on the Spider-Man reboot, because Raimi's trilogy is still a staple of modern pop culture. Kids are going to look at the new movie and go "Wait, WHAAAT!? I already saw this story! Peter Parker is supposed to be in college now, and he was going to marry MJ! Why are they starting over?"
Sony is doing this because it's easier for them to start over than it is to find interesting ways to evolve Spider-Man's character. If this reboot is a hit, they're just going to keep rebooting every ten years until the public says "I've had enough" and stops watching. And then, Spider-Man on film will be dead for a looooong time. That's why I hope this movie bombs-- if audiences reject this notion that franchises should be recycled every 10 years sooner rather than later, maybe the damage can be isolated.
